Nov-09-10 | | Travis Bickle: Happy Birthday Dr Benoni!!! |
Nov-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: While reading some Bill James, I wondered if Darrell Evans was the only player to be a regular with both San Francisco and Detroit. He played well for both teams, usually often second for the Giants because he walked so much. James called him the most underrated player ever. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <JB> Baseball-reference.com has a page that can answer questions like this. http://www.baseball-reference.com/f... WARNING: It can be addictive. Here's all the players who played for both the SF Giants and Tigers: http://www.baseball-reference.com/f... Harvey Kuenn, Tito Fuentes and Edgar Renteria stand out as regular players on both, though Evans is surely at the top of the list. |
Nov-09-10 | | Jim Bartle: Oh, man, Harvey Kuenn! How could I miss that one? |

 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> Appreciating Darrell Evans is one of the signs of the true baseball connoisseur. |
Nov-10-10 | | Jim Bartle: I think Jack Clark, another player with SF in the same era, was another really outstanding player for a number of years, though he faded badly toward the end. He got walked so often that his power totals were never all that high. In one year with St. Louis he had more walks than hits. Clark used to frustrate Whitey Herzon no end. Apparently Clark thought he was such a good fastball hitter that no pitcher would throw him one (for a strike). So he looked for curves and sliders, and ended up letting a lot of fastballs go which he could have hit hard. Clark hit thhe longest home run I ever saw in a game. It was an exhibition vs. Stanford in 1983, at Stanford's Sunken Diamond. He hit a pitch over the 400-ft. center field wall, over the 10-ft. wall atop a 15-ft. high hill 40 ft. farther, over a service road, over a set of temporary bleachers and into the middle of an intramural soccer game. Unbelievable. At that point he hadn't hit a homer in the NL for two weeks. |

 | | keypusher: <Phony Benoni: <keypusher> Afraid the link is kaput.> Sorry, that was just copied from Travis' link on Morgan. I didn't think anyone actually cared enough about Chad and Chad to do a link. Here's one. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/... They're both good guys, I think. If you could graft Pennington's head onto Henne's body, you'd have a great quarterback. |
Nov-11-10 | | Jim Bartle: Meanwhile the 49ers look at their #1 overall draft choice Alex Smith sitting on the bench, while local college star Aaron Rodgers, the one they passed over, lights it up for Green Bay. What a terrible choice. |
Nov-12-10
 | | Phony Benoni: And the Lions #1 overall pick, Matthew Stafford, is probably out for the season with yet another shoulder injury. He seems to separate a shoulder everytime the wind shifts. Too bad. The kid has shown he can play, but he can't play! |
Nov-12-10 | | Jim Bartle: Skowron was not pleased to be pinch hit for in the first inning with two on (two future Hall of Famers): http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... As you noted on that other page, Mike McCormick wasn't on the All-Star team in 1967, the year he won the Cy Young (and the first year there was one for each league). And the NL starter in that game was Juan Marichal, who was hurt later and had his only relatively poor year between 63 and 70. Marichal won 93 games in four years from 63 to 66, with an ERA below 2.50 every year, and never won a Cy Young (nor deserved one). Yet McCormack got one for his only really good year. He had better timing. |
Nov-12-10
 | | Phony Benoni: At least Skowron's replacement got a hit. Bob Cerv's didn't. But I guess Stengel had a little more latitude to make such moves, since his teams generally carried fewer pitchers and more position players than today. |
Nov-12-10 | | Jim Bartle: Didn't notice Cerv. Stengel really, really believed in the platoon advantage, I guess. I got the Skowron thing fro Bill James' book on managers. There's a pretty funny bit from Bill Veeck and the Browns. On August 24, 1951, he had 1000 fans with placards saying bunt, pinch hit, replace pitcher, etc. "manage" the team." They picked the starting lineup as well. The real manager, Zack Taylor, sat in a rocking chair near the dugout, out of uniform and reading a newspaper. And the Browns won: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... |
Nov-12-10
 | | Phony Benoni: 1951 was a year Zack Taylor probably would have liked to forget. First the fans managing, then the Eddie Gaedel thing. He was probably happy to get fired at the end of the year. |

Nov-14-10 | | Travis Bickle: Nah but's he's like an old pair of shoes. Throw em away and get another pair! ; P |
Nov-14-10 | | Jim Bartle: Woulda coulda shoulda.
Bo Jackson obviously had the talent, and I guess he produced in the NFL for a few years before he got hurt. But for all the highlights he really never looked like a great baseball player: lifetime .250 average, 141 homers, 300 runs, 415 RBIs in what would be the equivalent of five full seasons. Good but not great. I see he grounded into 40 double plays in his career. I bet those were forty balls hit very hard directly to fielders. |
