Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Feb-17-12  Jim Bartle: Jim Bouton is only 72, maybe it's time for another comeback.
Feb-17-12  Shams: <JB> Would Bouton be the most famous knuckleballer?
Feb-17-12  Jim Bartle: I'd say those Niekros are more famous, certainly as pitchers. Hoyt Wilhelm would be the other, I think. Bouton is clearly the most famous literary knuckleballer.

  WannaBe: Details, details!! =)

He only pitched for the Dodgers for what?! Two years maybe??

Feb-18-12  Jim Bartle: Oh, I thought you were referring to John Candelaria. Not a knuckleballer, though.
Feb-18-12  Jim Bartle: ESPN.com actually used the headline "Chink in the Armor" after the Knicks finally lost a game. They took it down and apologized, but really, that's pretty dumb.

Phony Benoni: We've been politically correct for so long that we've forgotten what politically incorrect is.
Feb-18-12  technical draw: Yeah that chink in the armor thing was pretty bad even from a pun point of view. But they should be careful since Lin probably knows Kung Fu...
Feb-18-12  Shams: It's at least possible that "Chink in the Armor" was a complete accident.
Feb-18-12  technical draw: No one will ever use chink in it's original meaning anymore (a dent or weak spot). It will go the same way as did Spic and Span.

Phony Benoni: In a desperate attempt to escape the clutches of Mitten Romney and Rick Sanitorium (yes, it's Primary Season in Michigan, and now I know how deer feel), I actually watched some of the St. Johns vs. UCLA game today. I was amazed at the activity of an Bruin player named Wear; he always seemed to be in two places at once.

It took the announcers several minutes to stop messing with my mind and admit that twins were involved.

Feb-18-12  Jim Bartle: A few years ago Notre Dame basketball team had twins, and they weren't real great. One commentator said, "Lucky they weren't triplets."

Phony Benoni: As usual, Wikipedia can answer the obvious question:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...

Probably the Barbers, Grants, and Van Arsdales were the most successful, the Cansecos to a lesser extent.

Feb-19-12  Jim Bartle: I'm surprised there hasn't been at least one pair of twins who were absolutely top players in their sport. The Barbers were/are pretty outstanding, though.

I'd add the Mahre twins as being highly successful in skiing, and the Bryan brothers have been the world's #1 doubles team, or close to it, for many years.

Stanford has had two different pairs of twins on the basketball team since 2000, the Collinses and the Lopezes. All big men and very good in college, all good enough for the NBA but more or less fringe players.

Feb-19-12  dakgootje: <I'm surprised there hasn't been at least one pair of twins who were absolutely top players in their sport.>

Fpr starters you have Bob & Mike Bryan - who have been dominating doubles-tennis for years.

WannaBe: There are the Lopez twins (Played basketball at Stanford) but were drafted by separate NBA teams.

Then there are the Sundins, Vancouver Canucks actually traded to obtain the two brothers in consecutive picks.

Can't remember if Canucks had #1 pick, and traded for the #2 or vice versa, and also can't remember which brother was actually picked ahead of the other.

Feb-19-12  Jim Bartle: I did mention the Bryan brothers, dakgootje, but doubles is just not the same as singles, not any more. What I was suggesting there have never been a set of twins as dominating in a sport as, say, Serena and Venus Williams have been.

Feb-19-12  dakgootje: <I did mention the Bryan brothers, dakgootje>

Heh, yes you did - my bad :P

In the Netherlands there have been 2 pair of twin soccerplayers; Willy & Rene van de Kerkhof, and Ronald & Frank de Boer. All were worldclass players - though not the Maradonna/Pele/Messi kind of worldclass.

Of course, if you'd only take the top-5 or top-10 players in the world, then it will be extremely hard to put a pair of twins in.

Feb-19-12  Jim Bartle: Right, I remember the deBoer brothers. Frank at least was an outstanding player, don't know about his brother.
