Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <td> You know, I always figured you were joking about being a Yankees fan. It would be part of your nature to do so. But now I see how serious you are, and how this fatal attraction has contaminated every aspect of your life.
Feb-15-12  crawfb5: <PB> Imagine my surprise when I opened up this morning's paper to see this photo:

http://www.ctpost.com/news/slidesho...

So if you're wondering where your tiger went, it is now about two miles from my house. I can check on it periodically if it will help ease your pain...

Feb-15-12  crawfb5: <WannaBe> TD doesn't run a Ponzi scheme, he runs a <pawn>zi scheme...
Feb-15-12  technical draw: Hello, my name is TD and...I'm a Yankees fan. I started very young when Mantle and Maris were battling for the home run title. Once I started watching them I couldn't stop. And before I knew it I was hooked. I almost quit once when Atlanta started winning but that darn chop chop turned me off so I went back to my team of choice.

I know I need help but the withdrawal symptoms are too hard to bare. I dream of pin stripes and pennants and wake up in fright yelling "go Yankees!"

I was told I could never leave the Yankees and that I would die a Yankees fan. I didn't believe them and now it's too late. Well, the season will be starting soon and I already have cravings for the standings and as usual I see New York atop the American league east.

OK, just one more season and then I'll quit.

Signed, Ruth, uh, I mean TD....

Feb-15-12  technical draw: Above: Bare should be bear. (I think).

Feb-16-12  Jim Bartle: Gary Carter has died. I looked at his record and was surprised to see he was already a ten-year veteran, playing close to every game at catcher, before he came to the Mets. Then he still had the two great years in 1985 and 1986 before fading.

The Mets traded four average-to-pretty good guys to get him, you'd have to say that was a bit risky. But it sure worked out.

Phony Benoni: In my mind Gary Carter was always associated with the Expos, and it was bit unsettling to hear the Local Sports Guy refer to him only as a "Former Mets catcher".

Probably media obsession with the Big Apple again. I can live with it, as long as they don't start referring to "Former Yankees pitcher Phil Niekro".

Feb-17-12  Jim Bartle: As I said, I was surprised looking at his record that Carter played so long and so well for the Expos. But he was on the Mets when they won the Series, so I guess that's the reason.

The Expos certainly had the talent to win when he was there, with Raines, Oliver, Rogers and pre-injury Dawson.

Feb-17-12  Jim Bartle: Take a look at the Jeremy Lin Sports Illustrated cover:

http://www.sicovers.com/product.asp...

Somebody has got to be open!

Reminds me a little of when the Warriors would quadruple team Elvin Hayes when he got the ball in the post in the 1975 Finals, and he still couldn't find anyone to pass the ball to.

Feb-17-12  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Is the Curse of the SI Cover still in operation? If so, poor Lin is doomed.
Feb-17-12  technical draw: <If so, poor Lin is doomed.> Very linteresting...
Feb-17-12  Jim Bartle: There are always lots of examples of the SI cover jinx, so it's hard to ignore. Haven't paid much attention, but I do remember one spring Nomar Garciaparra was on the cover shirtless, with an article talking about how hard he works in the offseason. He suffered a season-ending injury the next week.

On the other hand, Michael Jordan has been on the cover about a hundred times, including three weeks in a row once (they still won the title), and it never seemed to slow him down.

What is up with that?! =)

Phony Benoni: I don't care how big Linsanity gets--his SI cover won't be as popular as the previous week's.
Feb-17-12  technical draw: <Phony> That's cause you haven't seen Lin in a swimsuit.

WannaBe: In other baseball news, T. Wakefield have announced his retirement.
Feb-17-12  Shams: <WannaBe> Saw that. Does that leave R.A. Dickey as the last knuckleballer in the bigs?

WannaBe: <Shams> Looks like it, Dickey's Wiki page have already been updated to say he is the only one left.
Feb-17-12  Shams: Dickey was a Mariner for one year. I remember him talking about needing the right manager. "It takes a certain temperament," he said (I'm paraphrasing). "When things go bad with the knuckler, they go really bad, and not every manager can deal with that."
