| Mar-04-12 | | Jim Bartle: Milwaukee did some strange things with their lineup in those years, in particular often playing light-hitting Frank Torre instead of Joe Adcock at first base, and still having him hit in the heart of the order. |

 | | Phony Benoni: OK. I know it's just the first two days of Spring Training, and past performances are no guarantee of future results. But today the Tigers beat the Braves 18-3, hitting nine home runs in the process. The Atlanta starter, Julio Teheran (would I joke about a thing like that?), gave up six hits, all homers. Yesterday, Detroit beat Atlanta 2-0 with a one-hitter, the only hit being allowed by Future Deep Minor League Pitcher Chris Bootcheck. Obviously not ready for prime time. If nothing else, you gotta love the names in spring training. I am trying very hard not to get excited, but The Voice of the Turtle is heard in the land. |

| Mar-04-12 | | Jim Bartle: "The Atlanta starter, Julio Teheran (would I joke about a thing like that?), gave up six hits, all homers." Then he had a brilliant BABIP of .000, right? |
|
Mar-04-12
 | | WannaBe: Man, Teheran got bombed, big time!! Talk about self-implosion! On a different note, from http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7... <Trevor Pryce, who played on the defensive line for the New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens and Denver Broncos, told The New York Times that bounty programs are common in the NFL, with players pledging cash to reward big plays in a game."It's pretty much standard operating procedure," the retired Pryce told the newspaper. "It made our special teams better. I know dudes who doubled their salary from it. Trust me, it happens in some form in any locker room. It's like a democracy, the inmates governing themselves."> Trevor went to Clemson Univ. |
|
| Mar-05-12 | | Jim Bartle: My cable system gave me the national networks via the Denver stations in the 90s, so I watched an awful lot of Broncos games, Broncos analysis, etc. Pryce was a key player on their Super Bowl teams, a super-strong and steady defensive tackle. |

 | | WannaBe: How 'bout that St. Mary-Gonzaga game?! Going to OT!!! espn3.com is broadcasting the game. =)
<JB> You watching this?!?! |

Mar-06-12
 | | WannaBe: If I am Drew, or any offensive player that is not a linemen, I would not play for the Saints. Period. 15 yards and an auto first down, versus taking out someone? I'll take you out. Try going over the middle on a receiving route. I think any games involving the Saints will be very, very interesting. |
|
| Mar-06-12 | | Jim Bartle: No, didn't watch St. Mary's, not on my system, but frankly I'd forgotten about the game as well. I think they play pretty good basketball in that "mid-major" league, even though they are small schools. Brigham Young is the only fairly large college in the league. |

Mar-06-12
 | | Phony Benoni: Hey, guess which is the first team from Michigan to qualify for The Big Dance? Final score: UDM 68, Valparaiso 50. Of course they probably won't survive round 1, but it still feels good. |
|
Mar-06-12
 | | WannaBe: Don't worry <Phony> Detroit Mercy will be matched up with the 5th finisher in the Pac-12 and UDM will win by double-digits. If not triple digits. http://espn.go.com/espn/story/_/id/... Worth reading, I remember the ol' LA-BOS rivalry. Worthy, Scott, Rambus, A.C. Green, Magic, Kareem, McHale, Dennis (freckles!?) Big Chief, Ainge (cry baby) Walton (on one leg and trying to play) and of course, Bird, before The Birdman became famous in Utah. Those were the good ol' days, where shorts were shorts and basketball was basketball. And because of this West/East finals, NBA changed the finals from 2-2-1-1-1 to 2-3-2 format. |
|
Mar-06-12
 | | Phony Benoni: The center of the UDM Campus:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:U...
My office is on the third floor in the back corner furthest from the entrance. I interpret this as recognition that my work is too important to be interrupted. Your mileage may vary. The appearance of the building has changed radically in the five years since the picture was taken. The Book Return is now in the left corner of the porch instead of the center. We're just a Happening Bunch. |
|
Mar-07-12
 | | WannaBe: A few more victories, they'll rename the school to Univ. of Detroit of No Mercy. |

Mar-07-12
 | | Phony Benoni: Actually, UDM has won their last two first-round games, beating St Johns in 1998 (10 vs. 7 seed) and UCLA in 1999 (12 vs. 5 seed). OK, I guess the latter is not saying much. This year, though, they're projected as around a #14 seed or so. That's stretching it a bit. |

Mar-08-12
 | | WannaBe: Really, why do sports leagues even bother with salary cap anymore? http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/sto... |

 | | Fusilli: Nice post on the POTD today, <PB> |
|
| Mar-09-12 | | Shams: <WannaBe> Gotta have the salary cap, it's a great mechanism for keeping the playing field level! |
|
Mar-09-12
 | | Phony Benoni: Brandon Inge is trying to become the Tigers' starting 2B this year. Poor fellow has no confidence left; he doesn't even think he can beat out Miguel Cabrera at 3rd. Inge has had opening day starts at three different positions: catcher, center field, and third base. Adding a fourth would be interesting, but not a record. Pete Rose, for one, has six: 1B, 2B, 3B, LF, CF, RF. Yes, believe it or not, Rose was the Reds everyday centerfielder at the start of 1969, with Bobby Tolan in right. They switched mid-season, and that seemed to work better. |
|
| Mar-09-12 | | Jim Bartle: Pete Rose seemed to be able to get the job done, whatever was asked of him. But still, I can't see him as a centerfielder. Too bad Tolan got injured. He probably would have replaced Geronimo on the Big Red Machine, and they would have been that much better. |

Mar-09-12
 | | WannaBe: News: Illinois fires Coach Bruce Weber.
Reaction: Maybe he can coach at Weber State.
News: Colts fielding trade offers for D. Freeney.
Reaction: Indy is shooting for Super Bowl in 2035. |

Mar-09-12
 | | WannaBe: Suh + car + Portland (Again!) http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7... |
|
Mar-09-12
 | | Phony Benoni: I do not like this. Detroit's other superstar problem child, Miguel Cabrera, appears to have genuinely cleaned up his act. Suh hasn't yet learned, both on and off the field, and I hope it doesn't take a real tragedy for him to do so. |
