Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

  WannaBe: Wow... http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7...

Maybe the Colts want to 'out-do' their record from last season. (2-14), or maybe they are doing the Dallas Cowboy approach, gut everyone, get A. Luck, 14 concussions, bunch of sacks given up...

I mean, really. C'mon. You guys aren't really the Florida Marlins, are you??

Mar-09-12  Jim Bartle: Remember Troy Aikman's first year with the Cowboys? 1-15 record, and he got beaten up every week. Somehow he still became a great QB.
Mar-10-12  King Death: Ozzie Guiilen spouts off a lot but he was right this time:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/va...

Mar-10-12  Jim Bartle: Nice quote. I also like a vaguely related comment from A's manager Jackie Moore, named to replace Steve Boros in midseason. Asked if he considered himself an interim manager, he said, "The way I look at it, there are twenty-six interim managers."
Mar-10-12  King Death: <Jim Bartle> That's a good one I never heard but it fits for sure.

Phony Benoni: Yes. It was finally decided that Claude was not a fitting name for a Tiger, so the nameplates were changed to "Trade" and "Mark".
Mar-15-12  drukenknight: Oh I finally got some more input on BABIP. It seems to be about 0.02 stand deviation from a mean of about 0.29 I believe. here is thread, classic illustration of pitcher Hellickson who sabr geeks think he will regress and Hellickson of course doesnt buy it:

http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org...

Mar-15-12  Jim Bartle: Hellickson makes a decent point. Certainly pitchers like Maddux and Glavine got guys to hit the ball (didn't strike out that many) and got them out at a high rate. At St. Louis Herzog used to tell his pitchers not to walk anybody, give them a chance to hit the ball, "you've got a great defense behind you."

Phony Benoni: The downside of having a Cy Young/MVP season are the expectations. They do tend to rise just a bit.

<LAKELAND, Fla. -- Justin Verlander described Thursday's spring start as "better."

He called his previous outing "horrible" after giving up three hits and striking out four in four scoreless innings against the Washington Nationals last Saturday.

Verlander allowed a homer to leadoff batter Endy Chavez on Thursday, then struck out eight in 3 2/3 innings before 8,069 at Joker Marchant Stadium.

"It was better today, still didn't get quite in a groove I want, but definitely better," Verlander said.>

Mar-16-12  playground player: <Phony Benoni> Billy Loes won 19 games one season. When asked if he'd be shooting for 20 next year, he replied, "Heck, no. If you win 20 once, they expect you to do it all the time."
Mar-16-12  Jim Bartle: Loes came to the Giants in 1960, as part of one of their few good trades. They got Loes plus Billy O'Dell for Jackie Brandt and second stringers.

Looking at his record, Loes had an all-time bad year with the Dodgers in 56. One start, one and a third innings, six earned runs. Yikes.

One pitcher who probably took Loes' advice too literally was Jim Bunning, who won 19 three years in a row with the Phils, and he had to lose a bunch at the end of the '64 season to keep it at 19.

Phony Benoni: So that's two #15 seeds beating #2 seeds today. Might I remind everybody that UDM is a #15 seed?

Naw. Lightning never strikes three times.
