Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Yeah, they count the play-in games on Tuesday and Wednesday as the first round now. Of course, round numbers become irrelevant once you get to the Sweet Sixteen, the Elite Eight, the Final Four, and the Terrible Two.
Mar-16-12  Jim Bartle: I remember when it was 24 and only league champions plus a few independents were invited. The ACC only got to send one, and of course no Pac-8 team sniffed the tournament except for UCLA.

So eight league champions were seeded directly into the final 16.

WannaBe: I had Duke in the finals against U. Nor. Carolina, I had St. Mary's in the Elite 8, I had UCLA going to the final 4, and I had Houston with Clyde Drexler going to the Sweet 16...

I had Indiana State reaching the Sweet 16 also... My bracket is so broke(n), it's not even pawn-shop (James) Worthy...

BTW, it's raining so hard outside, I see animals walking 2 by 2. And I live in San Mateo County, which is pretty high up, elevation wise.

OhioChessFan: I absolutely can't believe how Purdue played that. Why hold the ball like that? 2 possessions in a row they didn't get a shot off. The one I can never figure out is getting the ball with about a minute left, and not instructing the players to take a shot with about 45-50 seconds left, to get 2 for 1 possessions. Instead, they ran the clock all the way down-WHY?!- and ended up with nothing. Horrible coaching.
Mar-19-12  whiteshark: <PB> Here is most likely the only <dirp attack> game that miraculously survived forgottenness. D Martinidesz vs S Docx, 1992 Unfortunately black missed the historical unique opportunity to follow the intended deep dirp plan.

Furthermore, I'm probably, if not certainly sure that <Augustus J. Dirp> was of Irish descent as some of his descendants have invented the IPC.

WannaBe: Manning is going to Denver?! There goes Tebow...
Mar-19-12  Jim Bartle: I bet they'll find a different position for Tebow, or move him around, always with the threat to pass.
Mar-19-12
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Looks like a mentor situation to me. Nobody has a problem with Tebow's leadership or guts, just his mechanics and judgment. This will be an opportunity for Manning to teach as well as play. Within a few years, he will be done and Tebow will take over.

And, until then, they will surely torture other teams with the threat of Tebowization. After all, the guy is a walking two-point conversion.

Mar-19-12  Jim Bartle: I think when he was a freshman at Florida Tebow would come in as a halfback and line up beside the quarterback, sometimes taking the snap and running, or passing. He could do the same in Denver.
Mar-19-12

keypusher: According to <sources>, the Broncos will trade Tebow.

<While Manning soon will arrive in Denver, Tebow could well depart. According to sources, Denver will try to trade Tebow -- who led the team to an 8-8 finish, an AFC West title and a first-round playoff victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.>

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/7...

I hope no one here would dream of arguing with <sources>.

Mar-19-12  Jim Bartle: They should trade Tebow to the Raiders, then make a reality show about it. Can you imagine Raiders "Darth Vader" fans trying to get behind Tebow?

WannaBe: 49ers were also interested in Manning, and A. Smith went to Miami for a talk.

(Smith & Manning have the same agent...)

Bad feelings between SF & Smith?? After coach Hardbaugh said Smith was his guy? Making the play-offs, losing in OT??

Stayed tuned...

Mar-19-12  Jim Bartle: But the Niners DID sign Manning. I read it in the paper.

Oops, that was Manning-ham.

If Miami signs Smith...sigh. Certainly wouldn't be the stupidest thing the franchise has done in the last decade, by a long shot. But we already have a mediocre QB on the roster, Matt Moore. And he's cheap.

Phony Benoni: Peyton Manning turns 36 on Saturday, so a four-year deal puts him to age 40. He's already showing signs of wear and tear, and just missed a full season with an injury. There's no guarantee he'll be back at full strength, and it seems hard to believe he's anything but a short-term solution.

I still think Tebow is well advised to stay in Denver and learn; his permanent opportunity may come sooner than we think. But he's also a proud man, so that may not be easy.

WannaBe: <keypusher> Gerrard declined pretty much all offers last year after being released.

Now he is willing to compete for a starting job?!

Sounds like desperation. :-)
