Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Mar-24-12  Jim Bartle: Tonight it looks as if Ohio State is finding ways to get the ball to the "ungaurded" big guy near the basket against the Syracuse zone. It also seems they're ready to fire up a shot, any shot, if they see their guys have good position under the boards (sort of like the Sixers used to do with Moses Malone).

WannaBe: So, people have been asking me, "O, great Wabbit, have 2 school from the same state met in the NCAA basketball finals before?"

The answer is "Yes, it happened in the '60-'61 school calendar year, when Cincinnati beat Ohio State, and '61-'62 school year, they met/did it again!"

(Both time, Cincinnati won, and for that matter, the '59-'60 championship was won by Ohio State, over Cal Berkeley, so OSU reached the finals 3 consecutive years!!)

Mar-25-12  Jim Bartle: Right, with mega-All-American John Lucas. They also had John Havlicek, and Bobby Knight off the bench.

Amazing that Cincinnati won twice over Lucas' team without a big star, but couldn't win in 1957 to 1959 with Oscar Robertson.

Cal lost the final in 1960, but they'd won the title in 1959, beating Jerry West in the final and Robertson in the semis.

WannaBe: Gonna be total bedlam nuts in the Commonwealth of Kentucky come Saturday...

The two teams have already met once, Dec. 31, http://espn.go.com/ncb/recap?gameId... where UK won by 7, at home.

Mar-25-12  Jim Bartle: I can't stand Rick Pitino, think he's a serial cheater. So "Let's Go, Kentucky!"

WannaBe: Great game, tied at half time, Craig Saiger just look so much taller than Roy Williams. Plus his suit does not 'too' tacky... :-))

<JB> wonder if the 2 bands will take turn playing 'My Kentucky Home', just like before the Derby.

Mar-25-12  hms123: <Jim Bartle>

Calipari is no better than Pitino. They are both awful. The only thing I can say in Pitino's favor is that he is smarter than Calipari.

WannaBe: <JB> I imagine, you will be sitting next to Ashley Judd!
Mar-25-12  Jim Bartle: In my dreams, WannaBe.

And I thought Calipari was the coach at Memphis, not Kentucky. Can't keep up with these guys as they jump from job to job. I agree that Calipari and Pitino are cut from the same cloth.

So I'll have to root for both Kentucky and Louisville to lose.

WannaBe: Speaking of Ashley Judd, here is one from ESPN.com Page 2, by Lynn Hoppes:

"Sunday is going to be a big day for Dario Franchitti and his wife, Ashley Judd.

Franchitti returns to the track in St. Petersburg, Fla., for the start of the IZOD IndyCar Series season -- the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg at 12:30 p.m. on ABC. Franchitti won last year's race here on his way to his third consecutive IndyCar championship and fourth overall.

And Judd, who has been an actress for 20 years, will be glued to a television watching her Kentucky Wildcats play Baylor in the NCAA tournament's Elite Eight at 2:20 p.m. Judd, who grew up in eastern Kentucky and graduated from UK, is the Wildcats' No. 1. fan.

"Ashley has tried getting me into basketball because she's so passionate about it," said Franchitti, who has been married to Judd for 11 years. "I know these Wildcats are really good this year and she thinks they have a real shot."

<As for Franchitti, he is all about racing. That's what he thinks about 24-7.>

"I can't spend any energy thinking of anything else," he said. "I still have a lot of goals left."

Franchitti began like a lot of drivers, starting in karting. Growing up in Scotland, the 38-year-old Franchitti won the Karting Scottish Junior Championship in 1984. He continued winning and raced in CART, NASCAR and even Sports Car.

And now he's ready to start the 2012 season in IndyCar.

"I still love what I do and I'm still very competitive," he said. "I want to win races. I'm not looking to give this up for a long time. This is all I can think about.""

Let me get this straight, you are married to Ashley Judd, http://www.google.com/search?tbm=is.... granted, it's been 11 years, but all you can think of is Indy Car Racing??

(Isn't Indy racing the 5th most popular in racing? Behind NASCAR, Idiorot, Tour de France, 24 Hours of le Mans, and Cambridge-Oxford rowing??)

WannaBe: Okay, after reading that article, I had to look this up, and since I had to look it up, you (guys) have to suffer...

In Satchel Paige's last Major League appearance, he threw 3 scoreless innings for Kansas City.

Q: Who was the opposing team?

I know Paige only gave up 1H and got 1K, but I can't figure out who got the H and who was the K and most of all, why was he pulled!!! Old age? Tired?? =(

Mar-27-12  Jim Bartle: Yastrzemski doubled, Monbouquette struck out. He was 59, 3 innings was probably his limit.

Phony Benoni: Ah yes, it's Springtime in Michigan! The robins are blooming! The dandelions are singing! The Tigers are returning to Snowy Comerica Park! And, the surest sign of all: the Red Wings clinched a playoff spot last night.

That's <21> years in a row. I don't care watered down the playoffs are, that is still some accomplishment.

Mar-27-12  Jim Bartle: When I was a kid there were only 6 teams in the NHL, and four made the playoffs. Boston and New York were always at the bottom, so Montreal, Detroit, Toronto and Chicago played for the Stanley Cup.
