 | | keypusher: <Phony Benoni: I cannot understand the Tebow move. It looks like a bad deal for Denver (two low-range draft picks?), a bad deal for the Jets (just signed Sanchez long-range), and I still don't think it's a good deal for Tebow.> Tebow is a little like Fischer in one way. Arguments about Fischer's place in the chess pantheon tend to get very heated because his career is so unlike practically any other great 20th century player. So depending on what you focus on you can make a pretty good case for him as the GOAT (Greatest of All Time) or barely top 10. Tebow is more perplexing if anything. One of the greatest college football players of all time, a very good runner (though I think both Michael Vick and Cam Newton are better), all those comebacks. Terrific close to the goal line and in short yardage. If you look up intangibles in the dictionary you'd find his picture. But...as a passer he's not even average for a backup NFL QB. He's awful. I remember someone posting his passing statistics for the last five games he played last year (including the playoff win over the Steelers). They were almost laughably bad. You would expect anyone playing that way to get benched, if not cut. The Broncos lost four of those five games. Tebow seems to be an incredibly hard worker, and quite smart. I saw a quote from someone saying as a rookie he knew more about other teams' defenses than any rookie the guy had ever seen. So I imagine his problems as a passer don't stem from lack of effort. He's actually above-average at throwing long passes. But at every other kind of throw that NFL quarterbacks have to make, he's beyond bad (by NFL standards). Practically every kid in America throws a football at some point; the 32 or so who are best at it wind up as starting quarterbacks in the NFL. Maybe Tebow just isn't one of those 32, and never will be. In which case, what is he? Not even someone you'd want to be your #2 QB, especially given his rabid fanbase that would want him in the second your starting QB threw an interception. He's a wildcat QB, maybe a good TE or H-back if he is willing to be. If that's right, then a fourth-round pick seems about right, maybe a little high (I think the Broncos and Jets agreed to exchange late-round picks). I do agree the deal doesn't make a lot of sense for the Jets. As I'm sure you know, though, Tony Sparano is their offensive coordinator, and he some success with the Wildcat in Miami. I'm sure Tebow could run it better than Ronnie Brown. It will never be the Jets' main offense though; it was never Miami's. As for Denver, it's widely believed that they were crazy to spend a 1st round pick on Tebow, and the guy who did it is long gone, so that's a sunk cost. They got market for him by getting a fourth. Manning's backups in Indy hardly ever even got on the field, so I can't believe Manning would want Tebow around. |

| Mar-22-12 | | technical draw: The highest earning baseball player is Alex Rodriguez. The third highest is Derek Jeter. Who's the second? Ans: Joe Mauer.
Joe who? |
|
| Mar-22-12 | | Jim Bartle: I would have thought Pujols is one of the top three. Mauer is a three-time batting champion (and best BA, OBP, and slugging average in 2009) with a lifetime .320 batting average. Pretty darn good for a catcher, and a very good defensive one at that. But checking his record, I see he's never scored nor driven 100 runs in a season. He's usually had only 500 AB or so, but I would have expected some higher totals. |

 | | OhioChessFan: That's 2 really bad blocking fouls called against Wisconsin. And I have <never> seen a team move so much when setting screens as Syracuse. How in the world aren't they being called for that? |
|
| Mar-22-12 | | Jim Bartle: I've got the game on, but I'm sort of half-watching. Every time I look Syracuse looks as if they're killing them, yet the score is close. And when did Jim Boeheim get so old? |

 | | OhioChessFan: Great game. Hard to believe Syracuse is that good without Melo. Did I mention I have <never> seen a team move so much when setting screens? |
|
| Mar-22-12 | | Jim Bartle: Yes, I seem to remember something like that.
An odd defense from Syracuse, that zone. It looks as if they leave a man unguarded near the basket on the post, but it turns out to be tough to get the ball to the guy (#40 for Wisconsin). But I thought the Wisconsin player could have been moving around a lot more, trying to get really open. I guess Syracuse has used that zone for 30 years. They sure have to count on their guys being really quick to recover if they're beaten. |

 | | WannaBe: I think the Spartys are done, even with Magic sitting & rooting in the stands... |
|
| Mar-22-12 | | Jim Bartle: So Michigan State is out.
But I predict that one team from Ohio will advance to the Eastern finals. |

 | | WannaBe: http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-s... Also, game of the day, Kentucky-Indiana, Hoosiers handed the Wildcats their only loss of the season, back on Dec. 10th in Indiana (73-72)... |
|
| Mar-23-12 | | Jim Bartle: Didn't Kentucky lose to Vanderbilt as well?
Ohio State avoided a three-game sweep-out of the Big Ten last night, hammering Cincinnati in the second half. They look to have a very good team. |

 | | WannaBe: <JB> Details, details! That was SEC tournament. (So, I goofed in my post =)) See if the other Ohio school can beat Nor. Carolina tonight. |
|
| Mar-23-12 | | Jim Bartle: I would guess it's the end of the line for Ohio U. vs. North Carolina, but you never know. Xavier vs. Baylor, I don't have the slightest idea. Kentucky vs. Indiana does sound like an exciting name, even though I couldn't name a single player for Indiana, and only a couple for Kentucky. Both are such traditional powers, and neighbors. |

 | | WannaBe: Just heard of this book, gotta pick up a copy.
http://www.amazon.com/Dont-Put-Me-C... |
|
| Mar-23-12 | | Jim Bartle: The NBA version of that book could be written by Scott Hastings. He was a benchwarmer best known for inventing the "trillion" in the box score, for a player who played a few minutes but had all zeros on the rest of the stat sheet. He also said, "I'm often mentioned in the same breath as Larry Bird. They say, 'That Scott Hastings, he sure isn't any Larry Bird.'" |
