| Mar-28-12 | | Jim Bartle: I don't see how any sports franchise can be worth $2 billion dollars. |

 | | Phony Benoni: By the way, I want to caution everybody about looking things up at the <Baseball Almanac> site. Yesterday I picked up a Trojan virus [and keep it clean, guys!] on the way there, and this is not the first time this has happened. I've accessed the site plenty of times with no problems, but some areas of it seem to be infected. There's no way of knowing the bad spots beforehand, so I plan to avoid the site completely in the future. Too bad; they have a lot of good stuff. |

| Mar-28-12 | | Shams: <Jim Bartle> A dozen or so years ago a Picasso, I think it was, became the first painting to be sold at auction for more than $100m. The Times noted, "this tells us less about what a Picasso is worth than it does about what $100m is now worth." So, what's a paltry two bill, after all? |
|
| Mar-28-12 | | Jim Bartle: Of course times change quickly. I remember when Ryne Sandberg signed for $7 million a year, almost twice what any other player had gotten, and it seemed nuts. Now $7 million is typical for a really good player but not nearly enough for a real top player. Still, two billion? What's the most any team has ever been sold for? How much did the American guy pay for Manchester United, $700 million? |
|
| Mar-28-12 | | Shams: Looks like Glazer spent 800 million pounds, give or take, in 2005. So, somewhere north of a billion USD. Of course you are right and the figures are absolutely absurd. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glazer... |

 | | WannaBe: It just means, that after I win the Friday's Mega Lotto, I can afford to buy the left field bleacher section at Dodgers Stadium. |
|
| Mar-28-12 | | Jim Bartle: I find it jarring that Dodger Stadium is now the 3rd oldest in the major leagues. I went a few times in the late 70s/early 80s and thought it was absolutely marvelous. But I guess the many of the modern stadiums have passed it by. Pac Bell in SF (or whatever they call it now) sure was great, but just for baseball, no better than Dodger Stadium. |

 | | WannaBe: <JB> AT&T Park, and it's nice, I like how the levels are situated right on top of another, not as much bowl shaped, where if you are in the cheap seats, you are miles and miles away from the action. |
|
| Mar-28-12 | | Jim Bartle: Oh certainly a great stadium, maybe even too luxurious for baseball. My point is that purely for baseball, Dodger Stadium is just as good. Except for the view. And Dodger Stadium has a lot of history, which AT&T still doesn't. |

 | | WannaBe: This is for <JB>, so he can figure out who to root for/against on Saturday. http://espn.go.com/espn/page2/story... |
|
| Mar-30-12 | | Jim Bartle: Maybe they can both lose.
I've always liked the author for years. He's written "Sportspickle" since the mid-90s, sort of an Onion on sports. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Well, I have to root for Kansas simply because they beat UDM. It's always nice to think that it took the National Champions to knock you out of the tournament. But it's hard to pick against Kentucky. I like to watch for teams that can make free throws in the tournament. No doubt that's a shallow approach--but when I saw Kentucky go 35 for 37 in one game last weekend, that clinched it. |

Mar-31-12
 | | WannaBe: Game started, wonder if <JB> is rooting A. Judd to have a wardrobe malfunction. :-)) |
|
| Mar-31-12 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, how's it going pal? I haven't heard from you in a couple months of Sundays! ; P Are you ready for baseball season Dr?
Here in Chicago The Cubs are weak on starting pitching, power in the 3 4 & 5 spots and a little weak in the bullpen, other than that were ready to start the season! |
|
Mar-31-12
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis>, always good to have you stop by! And here I thought the Cubs were optimistic because the Tigers stole Prince Fielder from Milwaukee! But I wouldn't worry about your weaknesses--everybody seems to have problems there. The mood in Detroit is overly optimistic, what with sunshine and 60 degrees forecast for Opening Day. Yeah, we've got some solid starting pitching, a good bullpen, and strength throughout the lineup. The big worry in the "D" is the "D"--we may have one of the worst defensive infields in history. Of course, if the four guys hit 150 home runs between them, we'll just develop more fly ball pitchers! |

 | | OhioChessFan: Louisville has to be setting a record for missed shots inside of 3 feet. Some of that is initimidation, but much of it is just horrible shooting. |
|
Mar-31-12
 | | WannaBe: Looks like we will get to see A. Judd on Monday night, should make <Jim Bartle> happy. =) |
|
| Mar-31-12 | | Jim Bartle: OK, we all gotta go for Ohio State.
WannaBe: A. Judd is classy, not the sort to have a wardrobe malfunction, nor one I would want to have one. |
|
Mar-31-12
 | | Phony Benoni: Ah, <JB>, rooting for Ohio State is a hard thing to ask of a Michigan grad. |
|
| Mar-31-12 | | Jim Bartle: Travis: "Here in Chicago The Cubs are weak on starting pitching, power in the 3 4 & 5 spots and a little weak in the bullpen, other than that were ready to start the season!" Did you just cut-and-paste that from 2011, 2010, 2009, and 2008? San Francisco will of course once again be in the running for fewest run scored. And you just can't count on the admittedly great pitching to carry them with no injuries or bad years. Just look at that article posted here a few days ago: Lincecum gave up 6 runs total in four starts against the Dodgers vs. Kershaw, and the Giants lost every game. |
