Oct-02-12 | | Jim Bartle: What's the greatest number of postseason series (counting a single game as a "series") that a team could possibly play? I count five: one game to see if team is division champ or wild card; one game wildcard playoff; divisional series; LCS; and World Series. I guess the first one could be a playoff to see who makes the wildcard game as well. |
Oct-02-12 | | Jim Bartle: Funny thing, Cabrera's about to win the Triple Crown, but it's really not all that much better than his typical year. I do see his walk total is way down. I wonder if he's swinging more or if pitchers are throwing him more strikes. |

 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle: What's the greatest number...> Theoretically, 6, maybe 7... http://espn.go.com/mlb/blog/_/name/... |
Oct-02-12 | | Jim Bartle: You linked to that just to drive me over the edge, didn't you, WannaBe? |

 | | WannaBe: Rootin' really hard for them Philadelphia-Kansas City-Oakland A's, few month ago, when I went to see their game (B. Colon was pitching, and days later, he was suspended) I picked up 2 (Wednesday BART special) tickets at $2.00 a pop. They are outfield bleachers, almost dead-center, Section 246, Row 1, Seats 6 & 7. But hey, for 4 bucks, I got 2 of them. (Plus, they are in the front row! In front of Bob Uecker!! Take that, Miller Lite!) I would love to have the A's win tonight, (A's up 2 to 1, top 6, right now.) If they win, it would be a flat-footed tie between TEX and OAK, with one game to go! =) |
Oct-02-12
 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> But of course!!!! =))))) What are (on-line) friends for? That little ribbin' aside, Tigers should sit Cabrara Wednesday, the A's are not gonna let Hamilton hit any homers, plus, I'll be there, so there's the double-jinx. Rest him, avoid injury, and get ready to play post-season beeesballl. |
Oct-02-12 | | Jim Bartle: I thought the Uecker seats were "Bingo, must be in the front row!" |
Oct-03-12
 | | Phony Benoni: Cabrera will play tomorrow, at least part of the game. That's his nature; he doesn't miss games. He was pulled after five innings today, and it will probably happen tomorrow as well. <JB>: The reason Cabrera's walk total is down is simple: Prince Fielder hitting behind him. |
Oct-03-12 | | Jim Bartle: That could do it.
I've always liked Bill James and he's usually convincing in his arguments. But he's always claimed it makes no difference who's batting behind a player--there's no "protection"--and I just see too much evidence that it does matter. |
Oct-03-12
 | | WannaBe: Texas and Oakland will play a game tomorrow, that will decide the AL West. And every pundit said it will be the Angels and the Rangers. Hoooooow about that! |
Oct-03-12 | | Jim Bartle: Linemen are complaining about the new NFL uniforms: "It makes me look fat, and I'm not fat." http://online.wsj.com/article/SB100... |
Oct-03-12
 | | WannaBe: At the park, 40 min before game starts. Sold out game. Should be a whopper, Derivish Yu is doing his between start work-out. |
Oct-03-12
 | | WannaBe: Wow, bad inning for the A's... |
Oct-03-12
 | | Phony Benoni: Great. Next we'll be having offensive lineman asking, "Does this uniform make my butt look big?" |
Oct-03-12
 | | WannaBe: Fun game, wow! |
Oct-03-12 | | Jim Bartle: Especially that nailbiting top of the ninth. What a save! You've got to field better than Texas did today if you want to win. |
Oct-03-12
 | | WannaBe: Nah, the Dodgers are done this year. Great to see SF and OAK both winning the West of their league. My buddy Steve, who came with me to the game, is predicting another earthquake. |
Oct-03-12 | | Jim Bartle: Howard Cosell and Bob Uecker were calling a game, and since Cosell knew zip about baseball, Uecker was explaining something to him. Howard said, "Bob, you don't have to get so truculent. You do know what truculent means, don't you?" And Uecker replied, "Sure, Howard, if you had a truck and I borrowed it, it would be a truculent." |
Oct-03-12 | | technical draw: Although I know it ain't over til it's over but it looks like the Yanks have clinched division title. |
Oct-03-12
 | | Phony Benoni: <td> Congratulations on the Yankees winning that squeaker tonight. (Without Rivera, 14-2 is a squeaker.) That means you get Baltimore or Texas next; any preference? The Tigers get Oakland, and I do wish they played this game on paper. |
Oct-03-12
 | | WannaBe: And the Highlanders have clinched the AL East.
So, we are all set! Let the playoffs begin, all games will be streamed on espn radio. Can't believe it's another year, I remember us talking about NY-TB's game here at this time, last year. How fast did the past year go by. |
Oct-04-12 | | technical draw: <That means you get Baltimore or Texas next; any preference?> I'll take Baltimore. I saw a sign that said, "Don't mess with Texas." Plus an oriole is just a bird. |
Oct-04-12 | | Shams: Do I want to see the Yankees lose more than I want to see Ichiro taste postseason glory? Tough call. |
Oct-04-12 | | Jim Bartle: Now three triple crowns since I've been following baseball, all in the American League. Three different national impressions, as I remember:
1966: Robinson seemed to be on his way to getting it from midsummer. Everyone was in awe. 1967: Yastrzemski was having a really good season, but went crazy in September and people started wondering about the Triple Crown early that month. 2012: Not many peopole really noticed the possibility until the last week of the season. |
Oct-04-12 | | talisman: <Shams> not for me... anybody but the Bankees! :) ...the A's and O's are the two best sport stories for the year. Pulling for both and i live in texas! |
