Oct-04-12 | | Jim Bartle: The Red Sox didn't dawdle in getting rid of Valentine. I guess he knew it, since he badmouthed his coaches on a radio show (maybe his own show) yesterday. The team dropped from 90 to 69 wins this year. Probably not of historic proportions, but still terrible for a new manager playing with the same core players on the roster. As a certain wise kibitzer wrote on April 21:
"I gotta say, seeing Bobby Valentine in the Red Sox dugout as manager just doesn't look right. I can't say why, the Sox and Valentine just don't go together." |

Oct-04-12 | | Shams: <JB> When Bobby Valentine was in Japan (Chiba Lotte Marines if memory serves) his players were said to adore him. Probably because they were already such hard workers, and he made them rest a bit to stay fresh, which I don't think is standard practice in the Nippon Leagues. Have you read this book?

I voted 'The Players'.

 | | Phony Benoni: Haven't been following the situation in Boston, but I get the impression Valentine had lost control of the players--which is, to my mind, the One Mortal Sin of a manager. |

 | | WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> In one regard/aspect, true, but/however, a manager/coach must also have their approach/style. Maybe Bobby V. got too used to the Asian/Japanese culture of respect of a coach, and he rubbed the (Millionaires) players wrong. But he believes in his approach to the game and (maybe) the team should follow him. Or perhaps, the pendulum swung too far to the other side too fast, to go from one extreme to the other caused the players to revolt. (Hey, this guy is only making X thousands a year, I'm making Y millions a year! What does he know? Who is more important here?!) Magic Johnson ran a coach out of LA, thankfully, the result was good. If not great. Player(s) with great ego and greater salary may doom any coach/manager who are too 'stern'. Just my 5 cents, inflation, you know. |

Oct-05-12 | | Shams: Boxing before any of the 'big three' is a surprise:
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20...<Describing himself as "a proud gay man," Puerto Rican featherweight Orlando Cruz on Thursday became what is believed to be the first pro boxer to come out as openly homosexual while still competing.> Cruz has a title match in two weeks. |

Oct-05-12 | | Jim Bartle: From Sports Illustrated: "Elimination games are managers' games, and never more so than these wild card games. The Cardinals, Braves, Orioles and Rangers submitted the best possible roster to win one game, not a series of games. That means more pieces on the chessboard. With no need for four or five starting pitchers, managers can employ such luxuries as nine-man bullpens and six-man benches." Does this mean a team can use a different roster for each series? I wonder if in a one-game series, with games coming right up if they win, they might even leave their first two starters for the following series off the roster. |

Oct-05-12 | | technical draw: St. Louis is beating Atlanta 6-3 in the 8th with a rain delay. I sure hope St. Louis wins because I hate, I say again, I hate the Atlanta Braves. And I hate their stupid chop chop and pseudo Indian chant. Go Cards! |

 | | Phony Benoni: Just saw the highlight of the infield fly play. That's close. Looks like me like the shortstop could have caught the ball, and was even waving the left fielder off. But it would have been a very good play, a bit more than "ordinary effort". Part of the beef is that the umpire is supposed to call infield fly immediately, and this call was apparently delayed. If the umpire wasn't sure it was an infield fly, he probably should have let it go. But it's close either way. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Wild cards teams can make a new roster for the League Championship series. This does make sense, in particular for a pitching staff whose makeup will be quite different in a more lengthy series. |

Oct-06-12 | | technical draw: < My feelings, exactly: http://espn.go.com/college-football>... As usual TD has the solution. Since there are degrees in pre-med and pre-law just make degrees in pre-NFL. That way the student can spend all his time on the playing field "studying". They can earn a BSnfl. End of controversy. |
|
Oct-06-12 | | Jim Bartle: Just saw the play in Atlanta. No way in the world was that an infield fly. And to make it worse, it looks as if the shortstop jumped away when the LF ump made the call, thinking the leftfielder had called him off. The infield fly rule exists to avoid a situation where the defense can make an automatic double play. In this case there was no way the SS could let the ball drop, throw to third and then have the throw to second beat the runner from first. In addition to the infield fly is supposed to be called shortly after the ball is hit, not as it's coming down. |

Mid-50s this weekend in Detroit, and dropping. Detroit is favored, even though Oakland won more games in the regular season. Go figure. I just hope they play the game on paper. |
