Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <playground player> I wouldn't say I'm a big pro wrestling fan, but I do enjoy absurdist comedy.

However, in the final analysis pro wrestling is just a man's excuse to watch soap operas.

Nov-29-12  playground player: <Phoney Benoni> And here I thought you were a virtual connoisseur of pro wrestling... oh, well.

Years ago, <Mrs. PGP> and I used to go to the matches when they came around to one of the area high schools. If you think the wrestlers are fun to watch, you should see the fans. Sometimes the action outside the ring was a lot more bizarre than the action in the ring.

I exempt myself from that, of course.

OhioChessFan: I will never forget when a small time wrestling show once came to the local high school. One of the heels made a dramatic entrance to the ring, music playing, crowd booing, all great fun. As he walked along, a little boy handed him a program, and it was obvious the kid wanted an autograph. I'll mention now the wrestler was white and the kid was black. <Cue Theme From Jaws>

For a few seconds, the wrestler ignored the kid. But the kid persisted, and the wrestler stopped and bent down, a sort of dramatic show for the crowd, to let us know he was listening to the kid. The wrestler straightened up, made a faux pretense of being honored, appropriate facial expression, even placed his hand on his chest, like "You want MY autograph?" Then he verrrrrrry deliberately took off his elbow length white gloves, ostensibly to be able to sign. After he did, the kid handed him the program.

It was all very comical, but apparently much of the crowd was a little hazy on the world of wrestling, since people were even whispering "Oh, that's nice." The kid had a bit of hero worship on his face as he handed the heel his program to be signed. The heel took the program, examined it for a second, and then very theatrically.......tore it in half and threw it in the air. With the kind of evil grin you'd expect, he then started walking to the ring. The kid immediately started crying, some of the crowd was laughing, more were shocked, but all great drama.

<Cue Theme From Jaws louder> One person who didn't think it was funny was a man who apparently was the kid's father. (FWIW, I think this was all legit, or that 5 year old kid was the best child actor in history) Dad screamed at the wrestler, who turned around with a bored expression. He was less bored when dad jumped the cordons and began running at him with blood in his eyes. Several other black people with dad, I assume family, also jumped up and began running at the wrestler.

The wrestler quickly jumped up into the ring, and several other people with the wrestling program sort of gently tried to calm dad down. There was obviously some kind of signal for trouble, since within 15 seconds, every wrestler on the program, several security people, and other random people came running out of the back area to defend the perimeter of the ring. Another group of black spectators also ran up toward the ring, at which point it wasn't funny at all, and I know I wasn't alone in worrying about some kind of racial riot.

One of the other wrestlers said something to dad, I assumed offered him an autograph, and after a minute or two, the whole place got settled down.

Warning: Video may cause bleeding of the eyes

Nov-29-12  Jim Bartle: I always thought the Rams left LA because they wanted to. After watching that video I think the citizens of LA drove them all the way to St. Louis.
Nov-29-12  playground player: <Ohio Chess Fan> What you describe is an ancient wrestling tradition--the bad-guy wrestler is *always* mean to the little kid who wants his autograph. One of my boyhood chums had his autograph book thrown in his face by an unfriendly Gorilla Monsoon. He was very proud of that!

Another ancient tradition is bad guys putting on their act a little too convincingly and getting attacked by members of the audience. It's amazing, how many wrestlers have been knifed that way.

I guess some folks take wrestling just a little more seriously than they ought to.

Nov-29-12  Jim Bartle: They had a local wrestling show on TV in the Bay Area in the 60s, filmed at Jack London Square in Oakland.

I went a couple of times with my dad, and was amazed how different it was in person. Most noticeably the ring was extremely loose and bouncy, making it look as if the wrestlers were hitting each other even harder, and also, I guess, providing a little cushioning when they crashed. It was a lot of fun (we saw Gorilla Monsoon, Haystack Calhoun, Kinji Shibuya). What my dad really admired was the how well the announcer played the part of the straight man.

They have women's wrestling in Andean towns in Bolivia, women in their traditional dress (five or six colorful skirts) fighting it out in tents. There are a few youtubes.

Phony Benoni: <JB> If they had Haystacks Calhoun, it's possible that the ring was not originally loose and bouncy.

There is an incredible amount of research in the pro wrestling articles on Wikipedia.

Nov-30-12  playground player: <Shams> "Gorilla Monsoon" certainly had more pzazz than his real name, Robert J. "Gino" Marella. They said he was from "the untamed wilds of Manchuria"--aren't wilds always untamed?--but he was really from New Jersey. Oh, well, what's the difference?
