Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: Here is a 'funny' thing, I follow UCLA and Cal State Long Beach baseball on internet radio, and in the last 2 seasons, I noticed there are more non-HBP call in college.

At least 4 if not 5 instances where a college player got HBP and the home plate ump said 'no first base'. (The batter made no attempt to get out of the way)

I don't think I've ever seen/heard of a MLB game where the batter, after HBP, was not awarded first base.

The reason I brought this up, is because it just happened, between UCLA and Loyola Mary-Mont.

Apr-12-13  Jim Bartle: In 1968 Drysdale was pitching against the Giants and trying to set the record for consecutive scoreless innings.

In the 9th the Giants loaded the bases with no outs and Dick Dietz at bat. Drysdale threw inside and Dietz just stood there and let it hit him, seemingly breaking Drysdale's streak. But the umpire didn't let Dietz take first and all hell broke loose.

The Giants still had the bases loaded with no outs but couldn't score, and Drysdale got the record.

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> great info!! Do you know, off hand, any other HBP without the award of first base?

I swear it happens a lot more at college level.

Apr-12-13  Jim Bartle: That's incredible reading about the Yankees-Baltimore game.

I mean, Youkilis on the Yankees?

Apr-12-13  Jim Bartle: Ok, how do we score the triple play?

4-6-5-4-5-3-6?

OhioChessFan: The non HBP should happen a lot more than it does in the majors. It is ridiculous to see players make no effort to move out of the way.

OhioChessFan: <PB: The Orioles have had only one other rally since 1969?>

I think that's what the story said. You'd think the AP could do better than that.

Apr-13-13  Jim Bartle: Boring personal story alert!

I was umpiring a Babe Ruth League game when a pitcher threw a really nice curve which caused the batter to duck his head right over the plate. The ball hit him on the helmet but in the heart of the strike zone.

The batter was trotting to first when I called it a strike. I immediately had three coaches and about twenty parents fighting to get to me first. But really, it wasn't even a close call.

OhioChessFan: When I first started umpiring, we had a game summary card that the respective coaches were supposed to sign to verify the final score. And, shudder, a space for comments about the umpire. The most scathing review I got was from a winning coach, whereupon the losing coach wrote "He did a great job."
Apr-13-13  Jim Bartle: I'm glad we never had "umpire comments." I had some terrible games, and was sometimes intimidated by the coaches of the best and most aggressive teams.

Of course it was also a problem that coaches didn't always know the rules, so I always had rulebooks with me. The biggest problem was that in Babe Ruth and Pony League, once a pitcher was removed he couldn't pitch again, even if he stays in the game. Coaches would try that all the time, so I started including the rule in the ground rules meeting.

OhioChessFan: I was admittedly not good behind the plate. But I had a gift for being able to see the closest plays on the bases. Still do, and people are amazed I'm almost always proven right by instant replay.

The worst game I ever had was a coach whose son was the pitcher. He was horrible, and even giving him a reallly big strike zone, the kid was walking the ballpark. It felt like a sitcom scenario.

Per the rules, it galls me that announcers making huge money don't know the rules either. My pet peeve is the term "ground rule double" when a ball bounces over a fence. That's simply a double.

Apr-13-13  Jim Bartle: I was just the opposite. I could call balls and strikes pretty well, with a wide strike zone, but was bad on tag plays, especially on steals.

OhioChessFan: The point most people miss on tag plays is that wherever on the body the tag is placed, it must be that far away from the base for the runner to be out. eg a second baseman slaps a tag on a runner's knee and people are stunned to see a safe call. I have demonstrated to people with a pointed foot how far away from the base a tag must be made for that to be an out. A couple feet at least, and they know that rarely does a fielder reach that far toward the previous base. Likewise diving back to first on a pickoff attempt. If the tag isn't made on the hand, the runner is probably safe.

I am really good at calling strikes/balls watching TV. I always thought the perspective from the pitcher's side was much easier than from behind the plate. I had no sense of the low end of the strike zone. The shocked looks I got from pitchers or batters let me know when I missed bad.

Apr-13-13  Jim Bartle: It's hard to call a close tag play if the tag is made at the waist or shoulder. If the fielder can he should definitely try to tag at the knee or lower.
