 | | WannaBe: http://espn.go.com/blog/green-bay-p... Sorry Aaron, I know you went to Cal and hence, supposedly to be "Smart"... <Rodgers then said he felt he could adequately prepare for the regular season without a single preseason game.> Players don't get hurt in practices? Or does that mean you are going to prepare for the regular season just 'walk' through the play book? No sprints (Watch out for those hammy injuries), no tackle dummies (Watch out for those shoulder injuries) and no full contacts? (Watch out for those ankles and knees and arms!!) |

 | | Phony Benoni: Ty Cobb once missed all of spring training due to a contract dispute, then went out and hit .420 for the season. In fact, many though he manufactured these disputes just to skip spring training. Don't tell me about old-timers playing for the love of the game. If Cobb and Ruth and quite a few other old-time superstars were around today, they would have high-powered agents, squeeze every million out of free agency, and be in frequent violation of the league's drug policy. |
|
| Aug-24-15 | | Jim Bartle: <Players don't get hurt in practices? Or does that mean you are going to prepare for the regular season just 'walk' through the play book?> As I understand it, the quarterback generally wears a red jersey during scrimmages in training camp, meaning he is not to be hit. I do wonder how much contact there is in practice or training camp. On one hand they need to practice hitting and being hit. On the other hand that raises the possibility of injury. When I was a kid 49ers training camp was just a few miles away, and I went quite a bit, but usually early during camp. There was certainly plenty of full contact, as they were trying to choose the roster. I think once the team was determined there was less full contact. The Niners had a pre- preseason intrasquad scrimmage at my high school every year. It was played as a regular game, normal blocking and tackling. |

 | | WannaBe: This day in MLB History (From ESPN)
<On August 24, 1940 after starting pitcher Joe Heving was hammered for seven runs, Teddy Ballgame came in to finish things out, faring better than the starter, giving up 3 hits and 1 ER over two innings of work in the loss.> |

 | | WannaBe: Still a bit early, but keep an eye on that game at the North Side of Chi-Town... |

 | | WannaBe: Never mind, Cubbies got 2 hits. |

| Aug-24-15 | | Travis Bickle: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images... Cubs Win! Cubs Win!

 | | Phony Benoni: Well, Harry, it's looking like a special year for the Cubs as they go from WannaBe Watch to Glorious Victory. At least I'll have something to do in October. Tigers play a make-up game in Cincy and send Buck Farmer to the mound. They'd be better off with Ed Farmer, or even Buck Owens. I probably won't even follow the game. |
|
Aug-25-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, the Tigers did quite well with Bucky Ball for a while, building a 5-0 lead. But then the bullpen came in and the lights went out, Cincy scoring 10 in the sixth inning. |
|
| Aug-25-15 | | Jim Bartle: Yes, but I see Farmer was getting hammered in the sixth inning, giving up two homers. Of course I wasn't watching, so I didn't see what his pitches looked like, but three runs after five shutout innings normally wouldn't be enough to take a pitcher out. |
|

 | | Penguincw: Ugh, Yankees win 1-0 over Houston, the AL East is tied again. :| These 2 teams are #1 and #3 in the league when it comes to homeruns, but not much firepower in general today. But then again, when Toronto visited New York, they "only" outscored them 10-1 (top 2 in the league in runs scored). |

 | | WannaBe: Enough chess talk. =)
Here are some useless information on the Cubs, from ESPN's MLB: <Kris Bryant is the first Cubs rookie to have multiple walk-off homers in a season.> That's pretty interesting/impressive, considering how many good rookies Cubs have had. <Most Walk-off Wins in 2015:
12 - Cubs
9 - Pirates, Angels, White Sox> |

 | | Tabanus: <PB> Please have a look again at L H Wight. I think this nails this guy down to Leverett H. Wight (1901-1988). It looks like he has been hiding in Chicago for 40 years. |

 | | WannaBe: Astros kicked 5 field goals on them Yank-mes! |
|
Aug-25-15
 | | Penguincw: Yeah, Yankees lost 15-1, so Toronto needed to take advantage and win, and they did, rallying for a 6-5 win. Toronto leads the division by a game, magic number at 38! |

 | | WannaBe: TOR won, NYY lost, LAD won, SFG losing...
Approx 6 more weeks to go in the season. Are we excited, yet? |
|
| Aug-26-15 | | morfishine: <Phony Benoni> I was catching up on old great players. The odd thing about the "Cubs curse" is how many great Cub players have come and gone over the years and decades yet still no ring. Mabye this is the year. I'll root for them down the stretch as my O's seem headed straight down the toilet <Jim Bartle> Interesting question: <...How good a fielder would a shortstop have to be to play every day despite being completely unable to hit?> Its all relative. Earl Weaver's Orioles were heavily weighted on pitching and defense yet didn't have a single .300 hitter in the lineup (the closest was Frank Robinson a lifetime .294 hitter who eclipsed .300 for the season 9 times). Check out these lifetime BA for the 70's Orioles: Don Buford .264 Paul Blair .250 Frank Boog Powell .266 Brooks Robinson .267 Davey Johnson .261 Mark Belanger .228 Elrod Hendricks .220 But when your pitching and defense hardly gives up any runs there's no need for great hitting...I guess ***** |

 | | WannaBe: Washington 'Skins LB Galette suffers an injury at the end of practice, potential torn achilles: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/1... Aaron Rogers have come out and claim that practices are not necessary as they are meaningless. And should cut back to do-away with practices. Instead, they should install Xbox in all practice facility and just run the playbooks on the computers. |
|
| Aug-26-15 | | Jim Bartle: <Don Buford .264 Paul Blair .250 Frank Boog Powell .266 Brooks Robinson .267 Davey Johnson .261 Mark Belanger .228 Elrod Hendricks .220> A number of those players were good hitters despite not-so-good batting averages. But from what I know, at least three of them (Blair, Brooks Robinson and Belanger) were exceptional fielders, and I believe the others were quite good, with the possible exception of Powell. |
|
| Aug-26-15 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Mr Benoni, The Cubbies have to play the Giants again tonight... Last night we almost gave it away after an 8-0 lead! Bartle's team got 5 runs off Cub pitching... I think we need to make a deal with SS Juan Castro or some minor league sensation to shore up the bullpen! P.S. Phony we have Wannabe's Dodgers Friday night.
