Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: < Name the only player to be awarded World Series MVP on the losing team. >

Jerry West? (oh wait, wrong sport)

But for MLB, I think it was that series when some Bill guy hit a walk off home run to win the World Series.

Anyway, I don't watch football, but can't help sharing this post I saw on Facebook:

Pete Rose

- Caught cheating once, admitted to guilt: banned for life

Tom Brady

- Caught cheating multiple times, denies guilt: allowed to play

WannaBe: <penguincw> Well, <Phony Benoni> named the roommate and the (infield) playing partner of the Trivia Answer.

If that gives you a clue. Here, I'll give you another (useless) clue, when he won the MVP on the losing team, my mother was about 9 years old.

WannaBe: Wow, Milwaukee swept Pittsburgh Pirates. Image all the winnings if you had bet Milwaukee to win each game in that series.

Or better yet, bet on a parlay, that it would be 4-games sweep. Ka-Ching!!

Phony Benoni: If I seem depressed, well, the Tigers are no longer just losing. They are being consistently annihilated in a style that would embarrass the 62 Mets.

The only game they've won in the last week was by a 7-6 score when Verlander starter and the bullpen just couldn't give it away.

Forget about a play-off spot. The only question left is whether they will catch Oakland for worst record ine league. And it's 8-1 Indians tonight.

Penguincw: And the Jays lose 10-2, while the Yanks wins 5-2. New York is now just a half game behind the Jays. Prior to tonight:

Yankees' last 6 games: W W W L W W

Toronto's last 6 games: W W W L W W

:|

BTW: Canada has a federal election coming up next month. Party candidate Justin Trudeau visited, and just like during Stephen Harper's visit, the Jays lost. I wonder if Tom Mulcair has came yet...

Tony Zych. Hehe. 100+ year old record. This reminds me of some story some user told me on this site about people changing their last name just so they can be the last in the phone book. But that's not the type of attention you want to get. :P Like do you guys ever feel sorry for the owner of the phone number of xxx-123-4567 or xxx-111-1111 or something?

Oh and BTW, Jays are also chasing a 100+ year old record, as they look to have Donaldson, Bautista and Encarnacion place 1-2-3 in RBIs by the end of the season.

Unfortunately, when baseball is out, I follow hockey (and a bit of basketball). Maybe I don't like football because Toronto doesn't have a team competing in the NFL.

<PB> You said in the Bistro that <Others have promoted some of them (and how I hate those numbers in the Event Name. But now I'm stuck with using them>

Did you mean the Event names of the US Opens in TI? I could try to help you out, via slips, but need to know exactly what you want.

<MissScarlett: I notice the bio of Edward Lasker credits him with winning five US Opens, but these tournaments were known as Western championships (or championships of the Western Chess Association, to be precise) at the time. I don't favour the practise of retroactively recasting events that changed their name or form. What do you think?>

Hmm. I don't know what to think. The use of "US Open" has gained ground, but I leave the decision entirely to you.

Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> Yes, I was referring to the [Event:] tag in those US Opens in the TI. My personal preference is not to use the number preceding "US Open". However, I recognize there are good reasons to do so. The consensus of the group was to include the numbers, and I don't feel strongly enough about the matter to demand a change to my preference.

So I am now using the number in all new submissions, e.g., [Event: 53rd US Open]. Of course there are thousands of games I submitted with just "US Open", and I suppose they should all be changed at some point.

Perhaps the best thing to do would be to go ahead and start promoting the finished tournaments, particularly beginning in 1940 when the name "US Open" began to be used. Probably the biggest weakness of the collections is the narrative. I don't approve of mindless "cut-and-paste" from other reports, but haven't felt up to providing much of my own work. I still have some large chunks of games "in the hopper", so it would probably be best if I nominated the collections myself or was at least notified beforehand so I could stop the process if necessary.

<MissScarlett>'s remark, though directed specifically at a statement in Edward Lasker's bio, is an interesting point. The tournament has undergone at least three name changes, and it's not always clear when these took place. The consecutive numbering since 1900 is too depply ingrained to be changed, but the pre-1940 tournaments should have their own actual names. There simply needs to be a way to indicate they are part of the US Open series.

You may notice that, when I am talking about milestones, I try to refer to "event played" rather than "US Opens played". That is meant as a concession to this question.

Northwestern Championship (1st US Open) (1900)
Western Championship (2nd US Open) (1901)
