Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> That could work. I think it would be useful to ensure that the term "US Open" is part of entry and thus searchable.

Tabanus: <PB> Ok, and I rest my case!

Btw I would not worry too much about the intros. I find it just as easy too edit the intro after voting, only that it tends not to happen.

Anyway, Jays win 10-4 :), but Yankees rally to win 6-4. :(

Every day is quiet on cg, my dear Penguin.

I fear this may have something to do with an overly tolerant leadership style from our well-intentioned webmaster. In trying to please everyone, he may have ended up pleasing no one.

WannaBe: Be in Reno tomorrow, here are the teams I will take -1.5 runs: LAD, NYY, TOR, WSOX.

Here are the teams that I will do as regular bets: SFG, MIN.

Sep-06-15  Jim Bartle: Anybody see Kris Bryant's home run today? Hit halfway up the scoreboard in left centre. Might have broken a second-floor window across the street if the scoreboard (new, right?) hadn't been there.

WannaBe: Saw it on ESPN high light before the PIT-StL game, someone said 465ft. And would have landed in the streets.

Still a heck of a moon shot.

Sep-06-15  Jim Bartle: I think 465 was where it hit the scoreboard, about 50 ft. above field level.

WannaBe: 465ft, be an easy fly out at Dodgers Stadium. Probably end up in Oakland if it was AT&T or Candlestick. =)))
Sep-06-15  Jim Bartle: Candlestick was a tough home run park, especially to left, and ATT is a terrible home run park, with the immense area in right center and the high wall.

WannaBe: I still like my parks symmetrical, none of these "jagged edges", thank you. Speaking of which, Astros will do away with that sloped centerfield next year.

WannaBe: This is a great 1-0 game between PIT and StL. G. Cole have not allowed a hit, yet.

Going to the bottom half of the fifth.

WannaBe: That was quick, second baseman had a chance on that line drive, alas, it fell for a hit.
Sep-07-15  Jim Bartle: Check out the Mets' Tejada jogging out of the batters box on a liner to right (start about 1:00). The ball got by the rightfielder (who flipped into the stands) and the guy ran full speed for a home run.

And the announcers praised him for running hard! I just don't understand batters not going full speed, nor announcers and writers not calling them out for loafing.

The guy who really hustled was the second baseman, who ran all the way out to the rightfield wall to get the ball.

Penguincw: Toronto's magic number is at 26. To make the postseason, it's 19.

MIL and CIN are the only teams eliminated from division contention. The Phillies can not win the NL Wild Card.

The closest team to clinching the division is the Royals, at 15. To clinch the playoffs, the Cardinals are at 10.

Sep-08-15  Jim Bartle: Have the Jays properly thanked the A's for sending Josh Donaldson to them gift-wrapped?

Penguincw: I think the Jays still need to thank the <Pirates> for sending them Bautista nearly 10 years ago. :P

Phony Benoni: Yes, it looks like the Phillies will be the first team to reach their Tragic Number. Teams on or near the bubble include::

Philadelphia: Div 2, WC 0
Atlanta: Div 4, WC 1
Miami: Div 6 WC 3
Cincinatti: Div 0, WC 5
Milwaukee: Div 0, WC 8
Colorado: Div 4, WC 4

No American League teams have a TN of less than 10. Detroit is at Div 7, Oakland at Div 9, bu the Wild Card race is much closer in the AL.

Penguincw: And of course, Toronto gets that game back, winning 5-1 in 10, while the Yanks lose 2-1.

Huge 4 game series coming up this weekend. Half game opportunities: NYY, Sep 14th and 24th; Jays, Sep 17th.

In other news, Phillies win 5-0, as they get their division hopes alive. The Mets stun Washington with a rally, so at this point, I'm pretty sure it's clear what 5 NL teams are making it. Oh, and the 2 MVP face off again.

  Phony Benoni: <TRAGIC NUMBER UPDATE>

In the race for Early Tee Times, three teams can clinch today: Phillies (DIV 1, WC 0), Braves (DIV 2, WC 0), and Rockies (DIV 2, WC 2). Next to reach the bubble will probably be: Cincinnati (DIV 0, WC 3). Miami (DIV 5, WC 2 could also go under by the weekend with a little luck.

WannaBe: If them Astros are still playing in NL Central, no one would be talking about them, but thanks to the move to AL West, they are in a tight division race.
Sep-09-15  Jim Bartle: I'm seeing this deGrom of the Mets pitch for the first time. Can't believe how hard he throws, usually the guys who throw that hard are relievers who only go an inning or so.

Phony Benoni: Interesting. The Tigers no longer have a ling to the standings on their home page.
