Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: Jays down 10-4 in the 9th, probably will lose, but you know, they've had some big rallies. With Hutchison pitching on the road, Jays would've had to outslug Boston to win.

But no matter, New York has already lost. Tomorrow, big 4 game series.

< PB: Bye-Bye, Phillies, Braves and Rockies live to fight another day. >

Man, what happened to the Phillies. Not too long, they had back-to-back World Series trips, 2 consecutive years with the best record in the majors, and 5 straight division titles.

Next on the chopping block: Atlanta, NL East (1)

< WannaBe: If them Astros are still playing in NL Central, no one would be talking about them, but thanks to the move to AL West, they are in a tight division race. >

True. Kinda sad to see the Cubs have tied for the 2nd best record in the majors (outside of Missouri), and only hold the 2nd NL Wild Card spot.

  Phony Benoni: Tonight's possible eliminations:

<Atlanta>, if they lose to the Mets. .

<Colorado>, if they lose to San Diego

<Cincinnati>, if they lose to St. Louis and the Cubs Win, Cubs Win.

Miami (DIV 4, WC 2) and Milwaukee (WC 5) could go over the weekend, but after that it could be a week before another team hits the Endangered Species List.

  WannaBe: From ESPN MLB:

<Today is only the second day this season where no MLB games have a scheduled start time later than 8:00 ET. The other was April 9.

It will also happen on the final day of the regular season when every game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m. ET.>

Methinkth that tractor pull, pie eating contest & County Fair at Gillette Stadium later tonight is the cause of this scheduling quirk.

Phony Benoni: The last day of the season is probably to ensure that no team, because their game starts later, has an advantage of knowing if they have to win or not.

Phony Benoni: Various magic numbers of the teams now in play-off spots, with number o games left in partenthesis:

St. Louis (22): <DIV 19, WC 7>

Pittsburgh (23): <WC 12>

Kansas City (23): <DIV 13, WC 13>

Dodgers (23): <DIV 15, WC 15>

Cubs (24): <WC 15>

Mets (22): <DIV 16, WC 16>

Toronto (23): <DIV 23, WC 17>

Yankees (24): <WC 19>

Houston (22): <DIV 21, WC 20>

Texas (23): <WC 23>

So the Cardinals will likely be breaking out the cheap champagne next week, though the Division is still far away..

On the other side, we can still have two eliminations today: Cincinnati needs a Cubs sweep, or a Cubs split and Reds loss. Colorado just has to lose, or have both Dodgers and Cubs win.. Miami and Milwaukee next, perhaps as soon as this weekend.

Phony Benoni: Cubs sweep knocks Cincinnati, Colorado and Miami out of the Wild Card race. Reds are completely gone; Rockies (1) and Marlins (2) remain minimally alive in their Division. Milwaukee (2) is still alive for the Wild Card, but all three of those teams could be eliminated as early as Saturday.

In the AL, Tigers (DIV 4) could get knocked out of the division race this weekend. However, the first team completely elimated will probably be Oakland (DIV 6, WC 8), and that won't be until next week.

St. Louis' magic number to clinch a play-off spot stays at 7. Next come Pittsburgh (11), Cubs and Royals (13), Mets (14), Dodgers (15), Blue Jays (16), Yankees (19), Houston (20), Texas (22).

Penguincw: Toronto sweeps the doubleheader vs. NYY! Haha, Game 1, Giradi leaves a struggling LHP on vs. 2 of the best right handed sluggers in the league. :p 9-5 (11)

And of course, the Jays beat up the Yankees' pitching again, 10-7 in Game 2.

Man, the Yankees bullpen has pitched like 20 innings in just 2 days. Not good, even with the expanded rosters.

To clinch the division, just 17. Postseason, just 13.

As for around the league, Milwaukee about to go down in the WC, while Miami and Colorado about to lose their division.

Oh, and Mad Bum (the only Giants player/pitcher I like) lost a perfect game in the 8th. Giants still trying to make the postseason, but it ain't happening.
