Dodgers (2) can still clinch over San Francisco tomorrow. Leaving soon will be Seattle (WC 1), Tampa Bay (WC 2), Boston (WC 2). Miami (2) can clinch third place over Atlanta. Well, they gotta have something to play for. |

| Sep-27-15 | | playground player: <Esteemed Baseball Mavens> As the 2015 regular season winds down, let's go back 85 years to the last day of the American League season, Yankees vs. Red Sox at Boston (using the Boston Braves' field). Working on only nine years' rest, Babe Ruth takes the mound for the Yankees and pitches a complete game victory against the Sox, 9-3. He also started two double plays. http://www.baseball-reference.com/b... Is that cool, or what? |

 | | Phony Benoni: Could a player combine a full-time starting role with full-time play in the field? If anybody could have it would have been Ruth, but his record suggests he was better concentrating on just one of the roles. He never had a really bad year as a pitcher, but his two "worst" seasons were clearly 1918-1919 when he was making the transition to full-time outfielder. His ERA rose, he gave up an extra hit per nine innings, and his already shaky control became worse (in both years, he walked more men than he struck out). Starting a game and pitching deep into it is certainly the most strenuous act on the diamond, even more so than catching. It would appear that the body simply needs some time recover before any more serious activity is possible. Today, of course, there is the DH role, and it's interesting to consider how Ruth would have done as a starter / DH. Physically, it might have been possible, but the roles are so different that full-time concentration mon both might prove impossible. |

 | | WannaBe: Here's the updated tracker for NFL Teams playing on the road 2 or more time zones away. Week 3 (2-2):
<WON> Oakland @ Cleveland <LOST> San Diego @ Minnesota <LOST> Chicago @ Seattle <WON> Denver @ Detroit. This brings the running total to 3-10 for Two or More Time-Zone on the Road. While for week three, the rest of the road teams performed 6-6, I am already counting KC's game tonight at GB as road loss. But will adjust this, if KC wins. That will bring the running total for road teams to 18-17. Week 4 will feature the following teams:
<??> Oakland @ Chicago <??> Cleveland @ San Diego <??> Green Bay @ San Francisco <??> Detroit @ Seattle |
