Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Penguincw: Kansas City wins 5-1, putting the pressure on Toronto.

Check out the LAA-TEX game though. 10-10 in the 9th inning!

< But there they are going into the last Saturday of the season. >

You know, for postseason teams like Toronto, this is going to be their last Saturday as well, unless they play in the ALCS, G2.

perfidious: Nice outing for Max Scherzer: no-hitter with 17 strikeouts and no walks.

Game score of 106 makes him the first pitcher since Walter Johnson in his fabulous 1913 season to record two 100-point games in one season.

Penguincw: Are you kidding me! Toronto enters the bottom of the 9th with a 3-2 lead, and loses 4-3. Sigh, now they have to win tomorrow, and hope KC loses in order to earn home field advantage throughout the postseason, not to mention facing the wild card winner, who has probably already used their best pitcher.

But in other news, Max Scherzer throws his 2nd no-hitter of the season!

Question: 5 other pitchers have thrown multiple no-hitters in the season. Who are they?

I can name 2 of them.

Oct-03-15  Jim Bartle: Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems there are quite a few no-hitters in the last couple of weeks of seasons. I think a lot of teams are playing rookies or aren't going all out.

Concerning Toronto's loss, at least they didn't choke like Texas. 4-run lead going into the ninth, ready to celebrate, and they give up five, including two fielders bumping into each other on a popup.

  WannaBe: Multiple No-Nos

J. Van deMeer, Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax comes to mind.

Penguincw: (is this an attempt to answer the trivia question)

Johnny van de Meer is the obvious one, and Nolan Ryan also threw multi no-nos in the same season (1938 and 1973 respectively).

Koufax threw his 4 in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1965.

Phony Benoni: I remember Virgil Trucks with the Tigers in 1952, both 1-0 wins in a season where he went 5-19 overall. Not much room for error.

And Allie Reynolds in 1951. But, as usual, I'm not as good on recent history, say after 1960.

Meanwhile, the Tigers clinch last place in typical fashion. Verlander gets them to the 9th up 3-2, whereupon the bullpen implodes for a 4-3 loss.

Verlander will end up 5-8 this year, but the bullpen must have blown a half-dozen leads for him.

WannaBe: I don't feel so bad now, a bunch of top 20 teams lost to lower ranked. But most of them were on the road, e.g. Ole Miss, Notre Dame. OSU got a big scare at home, but they won.

Alas, Ucla did not win, at home. =(

He'll probably get it by just warming up.

Yes, Virgil Trucks and Allie Reynolds are the other 2. The last one was Roy Halladay (2010) - perfect game @ Florida in May, and no-hitter vs. Cincinnati in G1, NLDS, IIRC. I believe in that 2nd no-no, Halladay faced this one batter with a 3-2 count, and <just> missed the strike zone. That was the only batter to reach in the game. Phillies won 4-0, Halladay even had an RBI single.

Today, it looks like about 14 games will start between 3:05 - 3:10. The lone exception of course is the STL-ATL doubleheader, which actually has no playoff implications. In case anyone is confused about the playoff picture: http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/ml....

Anyway, 2 pitchers could hit major milestones today. One is Kershaw, who is looking to pick up his 300th strikeout on the season. He should be good to go for Thursday vs. NYM, but in case 4 days rest is not enough, there's also Greinke.

Also, Buehrle is 2 innings away from his 15th consecutive season with 200+ IP, which is quite impressive. In fact, only 4 pitchers have done so. Who are those 4?

I know one of them.

Oct-04-15  Jim Bartle: That 200 innings record sounds like one of those artificial ones, where a number of pitchers may have had one year at 190 breaking up a streak of 20.

I remember there was a big deal a few years ago when Maddux had his 15th or whatever consecutive seasons with 15 wins. Well, Spahn had 17 straight years with 15, except one year with 14.

15 years with 200 certainly is impressive, though. I believe Cy Young had 15 straight with 300. Spahn has to be one of those with a 200-inning streak.

Yes, Young (the only one I knew) and Spahn are 2 of them. Who are the other 2?

WannaBe: Barring anything really strange, Kershaw 3IP 6K, exactly 300K for 2015.

Oh, Greinke won the NL ERA title, too.

Penguincw: < WannaBe: ... Oh, Greinke won the NL ERA title, too. >

He hasn't mathematically clinched it. You know, all you need is for Arrieta to pitch 15 scorless innings of relief or Kershaw to start with 70 scoreless. Even better if Greinke pitches in relief and increases his ERA...

WannaBe: LAA leading TEX, but HOU-ARZ are tied, HOU only need to win to clinch second AL Wild Card.
Oct-04-15  Jim Bartle: Don Sutton is one of the others with the 200IP streak.

Maddox had 18 straight, except in the 15th year he had 199 innings.

Oct-04-15
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: A Dodger and A Giant (for a few years, at least). And not Christy Mathewson, with only 14. And not Gregg Maddux, whose streak of 14 straight ended with a mere 199 1/3 in 2002.

WannaBe: Figures, last week I went against the Raiders, (traveling two time zones or more) and they won.

So guess who I picked this week? Raiders. And Bears just kicked a FG to go ahead. UGH!

Penguincw: Ouch, Buehrle only lasted 2/3 an inning, allowing 9 runs! In addition to the fact that Kansas City leads Minnesota 5-0, I think KC will have home field advantage throughout the postseason. However, he is pitching on <one> day of rest, but will end with 198.2 IP on the season. Not as close as Maddux, but still, Young, Spahn, Sutton and the 4th guy are pretty well known. Will Buehrle be remembered in the future?

Back to the actual game, the Blue Jays once won down 9-0 after 2 innings, and they once rallied down 7-0 in Tampa.

Oct-04-15

Phony Benoni: And, by the way, I read that Buehrle probably won't be on Toronto's playoff roster. Oy vey, are their other starters that good?

Penguincw: He has done it! Kershaw has recorded his 300th K of the season. Hopefully this translates well into the postseason, when the Dodgers face the Mets.

Speaking of the Mets...
