You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points. However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it. For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you. If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking. As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull. My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long. My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!" Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

But in other news, Max Scherzer throws his 2nd no-hitter of the season! Question: 5 other pitchers have thrown multiple no-hitters in the season. Who are they? I can name 2 of them. Oct-03-15    Jim Bartle: Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems there are quite a few no-hitters in the last couple of weeks of seasons. I think a lot of teams are playing rookies or aren't going all out. Concerning Toronto's loss, at least they didn't choke like Texas. 4-run lead going into the ninth, ready to celebrate, and they give up five, including two fielders bumping into each other on a popup. Oct-03-15    Penguincw: (is this an attempt to answer the trivia question) Johnny van de Meer is the obvious one, and Nolan Ryan also threw multi no-nos in the same season (1938 and 1973 respectively). And Allie Reynolds in 1951. But, as usual, I'm not as good on recent history, say after 1960. Meanwhile, the Tigers clinch last place in typical fashion. Verlander gets them to the 9th up 3-2, whereupon the bullpen implodes for a 4-3 loss. Verlander will end up 5-8 this year, but the bullpen must have blown a half-dozen leads for him. The last one was Roy Halladay (2010) - perfect game @ Florida in May, and no-hitter vs. Cincinnati in G1, NLDS, IIRC. I believe in that 2nd no-no, Halladay faced this one batter with a 3-2 count, and <just> missed the strike zone. That was the only batter to reach in the game. Phillies won 4-0, Halladay even had an RBI single. Today, it looks like about 14 games will start between 3:05 - 3:10. Anyway, 2 pitchers could hit major milestones today. One is Kershaw, who is looking to pick up his 300th strikeout on the season. He should be good to go for Thursday vs. NYM, but in case 4 days rest is not enough, there's also Greinke. Also, Buehrle is 2 innings away from his 15th consecutive season with 200+ IP, which is quite impressive. In fact, only 4 pitchers have done so. Who are those 4? I know one of them. Oct-04-15    Jim Bartle: That 200 innings record sounds like one of those artificial ones, where a number of pitchers may have had one year at 190 breaking up a streak of 20. I remember there was a big deal a few years ago when Maddux had his 15th or whatever consecutive seasons with 15 wins. Well, Spahn had 17 straight years with 15, except one year with 14. 15 years with 200 certainly is impressive, though. I believe Cy Young had 15 straight with 300. And not Gregg Maddux, whose streak of 14 straight ended with a mere 199 1/3 in 2002. In addition to the fact that Kansas City leads Minnesota 5-0, I think KC will have home field advantage throughout the postseason. However, he is pitching on <one> day of rest, but will end with 198.2 IP on the season. Not as close as Maddux, but still, Young, Spahn, Sutton and the 4th guy are pretty well known. Will Buehrle be remembered in the future? Back to the actual game, the Blue Jays once won down 9-0 after 2 innings, and they once rallied down 7-0 in Tampa.
