Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

  WannaBe: From ESPN MLB:

<The last time the Cubs won a playoff game was 3 days before BARTMAN. (October 11, 2003)

They are 0-9 since. >

Oct-07-15  Jim Bartle: 0-9???

Today is filled with really obscure statistics, such as "his 72 game score was the fourth-best by such a pitcher in the postseason on three days’ rest since the turn of the millennium. "

Three days rest is such a big deal? I can see it over a season, time after time, but once?

WannaBe: What is "such a pitcher"? Is he left handed but bats right? Is he from over-seas? Does he throw side-arm? Was it really 3 days rest or 2 1/2 because the game started at 3PM Eastern Time Zone?

Talkin' heads + Twitter + instant news = crap (Just my opinion)

Oct-07-15  Jim Bartle: The whole paragraph:

<That confrontation (Rodriguez' flyout) was Keuchel’s last of the night. He departed having allowed just thee hits and one walk over six innings while striking out seven over the course of his 87 pitches. Via the Baseball-Reference.com Play Index, his 72 game score was the fourth-best by such a pitcher in the postseason on three days’ rest since the turn of the millennium. Oddly enough, or perhaps not, given their near-constant October presence from 1995 through 2012, all of the top five such scores involve the Yankees on one end or the other:>

I think a lot of these young, stathead writers are just trying to impress each other. Or maybe they're auditioning for front-office positions.

WannaBe: Going back to this FanDuel and DraftKing stuff...

MLB runs this Beat the Streak (DiMaggio hitting streak) game. Two years ago when I stumbled upon this game, I told my SFG front office friend about it.

"Nope, can't play, not even my husband. Possibly my daughter, she's got a different last name."

That's how stringent/tough MLB's rule on players, front office on participating fantasy sports.

Oct-07-15  Jim Bartle: I believe it. How does it look if the person who wins works for a team?

Beat the Streak was you had to pick one player every day to get a hit, right?

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> You can pick 2 per day, but both must have a hit (If the player is credited as have an official at-bat)...

Also, if you submit a player that's playing on the East Coast, he gets a hit, and you try to pick a second player (Central or West Coast game), you are not allowed.

You must lock in your pick(s) before scheduled first pitch. I've seen cases where the on field ceremonies run long and I'm still denied my pick.

Penguincw: Just seeing this on Facebook:

"The Cubs play at 7:08 tonight, which is <19:08> military time. The last time the Cubs won the World Series was <1908>."

"Today is <10/7>. The last time Cubs won the World Series was <107> years ago."

I swear they play at 8:00, but still, the second one.

It's Back to the Future!

WannaBe: Okay, we had an HR by Cubs that traveled like 6,000,000,000,000 feet and G. Cole got roughed up.

Pittsburgh had bases loaded with one out and grounded into a double-play. Ugh!!

Back in the ol' days, you'd be pissed if you <DID NOT GET HIT>.

Penguincw: Looks like the Cubs are going to take this one. If the Pirates get shut out, they'll extend their scoreless streak in wild card games to 19+ innings. Nice to see 2 shutouts in the Wild Card games.

I also saw that Sean Rodriguez punched the Gatorade cooler. The hardest thing the Pirates have hit all night. :D

Meanwhile, the Leafs haven't skipped a beat, losing their first game of the season to Montreal (I swear, they always face Montreal in the first game of the season). However, some Blue Jays players were at the games.

Oh, and it might be a fake, but I heard Steve Bartman is back at a Cubs postseason game.

Phony Benoni: Never pick the Cubs until it's over. In fact, it's generally a good idea not to pick the Cubs when it is over. You never know.

WannaBe: Too bad that UCSB is the Gouchos, not the Scub.

Sharks & Kings got into a fight after 1:51 into the game. After Kings scored a goal.

Ahhhhh, hockey's back.

Penguincw: Done. Cubs win 4-0, good luck to them vs. St. Louis in the NLDS. I heard these 2 never faced before in the postseason. Is that correct, or am I misreading something?

The next postseason game will be in Toronto. Go Jays Go!

Oct-07-15

WannaBe: <Penguincw> That is correct, they were both in the same division for the longest time, so, of course, before the idea of wild card and expanded play-off, it was impossible.

For the longest time, winner of NL would play AL in the World Series, then it became NL West/East & AL West/East. (Atlanta was assigned to NL West, believe it, or not)

So, it was never possible for Cubs to play StL in a play-off game. (If they had to play game 182 for tie-break, it counts as regular season game).

WannaBe: More Lies, D@mned Lies and Statics, NL edition:

NYM took 4 of 7 games from LAD. (I was at the July 4th game in LA where LAD actually won a game, after the bullpen made it really far too interesting than necessary for my taste.)

StL have 11-8 advantage over Cubs in head-to-head play this season.

Penguincw: Yeah, I think that raises the "issue" of just 10 teams making the postseason. The league with the longest season, has the shortest postseason and also the fewest teams making the postseason. :| Time to expand. Hopefully Manfred can consider doing so.
