Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Dec-06-15  Jim Bartle: Just saw MSU's final play. Two Iowa guys had him stopped at the one, no question. But the guy spun and scored somehow. Unbelievable.
Dec-06-15  Jim Bartle: Stanford is heading for bridesmaid status in the Heisman voting for the fourth time in seven years.

Toby Gerhart was second in 2009, Andrew Luck second in 2010 and 2011, and Christian McCaffrey will be second this year. All the votes were probably right. Luck was the big favourite in 2011 but had a few average games and slipped behind Griffin.

Tabanus: Maurice Rosenthal, another stenographer, with a tiny question mark.

No doubt on K A Anderson, but missing middle name + exact dates (too many Kenneth A's around). It seems he's still living in Omaha.

  WannaBe: Did you know:

<Andrea Adelson
ESPN Staff Writer

Quarterback Deshaun Watson became the first player in Clemson history to make it to New York as a Heisman finalist.

But the school does have a Heisman connection. John Heisman, whom the trophy is named for, coached at Clemson from 1900-03, going 19-3-2. He also coached baseball.

There's also a street named for Heisman on the Clemson campus.>

The three finalists have been announced:

Anyway, Derrick Henry is going to run away with it.

WannaBe: Week 13 update on RTTTZMR!!

<WON> Seattle @ Minnesota

<WON> San Francisco @ Chicago

<WON> Kansas City @ Oakland

A rare sighting, as all 3 teams won on the road, with San Francisco winning a thriller in OT. Road teams now have a record of 18-29 when traveling across two time zones or more.

While rest of the league's road teams performed 8-5 on the road, and that running total is now 75-70.

This week, we will have the following teams traveling two time zones or more:

<???> San Francisco @ Cleveland

<???> San Diego @ Kansas City

<???> Seattle @ Baltimore

But R S Cotton I can't find. Probably an Army officer who travelled around. He's not in the city directories I checked.

Dec-10-15  Jim Bartle: Earthshaking tweet posted at ESPN:

<Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio summed up how the Spartans will have to play in their College Football Playoff semifinal against Alabama: "It's very important that we play our best, because our best will be needed here.">

That's real news, that MSU coach think that his team will have to play its best to beat Alabama.

Phony Benoni: <JB> Oh, that's just Dantonio's shtick. For years, Michigan State was considered the "little Sister" to U-M. He's used that insult to install a legendary chip on their shoulders, and keeps it there by going to great lengths to play the role disrespected underdog.

It seems to be working.. That, plus the fact he's a heck of a guy with the X's and O's.

Dec-10-15  Jim Bartle: A real dynamic comment by Dantonio, "we'll have to play our best." Of course what else can he say? "We have no chance." "We'll prepare a little bit, but it shouldn't be too tough to win."

My images of Michigan State will always be Magic Johnson, and the 1966 game with Notre Dame. I watched it in a Cal fraternity house with a hundred people, then went over to watch the Big Game (my first) in the rain.

Nobody could believe Notre Dame just settled for the tie. We couldn't hear the commentary, but I watched the end recently, and I couldn't believe Chris Schenkel and Bud Wilkinson just let it play out without a single comment that ND was unbelievably not trying to win the game.

Then in the Rose Bowl there was the spectacular upset by UCLA, which was given zero chance to win.

WannaBe: J. Heyward have reportedly signed with Cubs.
Dec-11-15  Jim Bartle: I read something that said Heyward was rated by advance stats to be one of the ten best players in baseball. Even if that is ten best non-pitchers, I don't understand it.

Heyward hits .290 with 15 homers and 80 RBIs. You can pretty much find rightfielders on a tree who can do that. He's supposed to be a great fielder, but I just don't see how that can move him to the top even if he's a combination of Clemente and Kaline out there.

WannaBe: Fun (Heyward) fact from ESPN:

https://twitter.com/SportsCenter/st...

Also on this day, 15 years ago, A-Rod signed $252M 10-years deal with Texas Rangers.

Which also included unlimited steroid shots in the butt.

Dec-11-15  Jim Bartle: Will Clark hit a home run off Nolan Ryan in the Astrodome in his first major league at bat. I don't know if it was his first swing but it was on the second pitch.

Clark was twice the player Heyward is.

Couple of other sites have also said, his first minor league at-bat, he took Fernando Venzuela's pitch over the fence, too.
