Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Dec-12-15  Party Animal: Hello Mr Benoni. I see this is the place to be for baseball info. In your opinion what are the best pitchers available on the hot stove market, not including the 200 mil.+ insanity range?

P.S. My Chicago Cubs better not monkey around & miss out on adding another quality pitcher this off season.

  WannaBe: Week 14 update on RTTTZMR!!

<LOST> San Francisco @ Cleveland

<LOST> San Diego @ Kansas City

<WON> Seattle @ Baltimore

In a contest, where many felt 49ers had a good chance of winning (well, at least here at NorCal, Vegas line was Cleveland -1) them 49ers put up a dud. The total W/L for road teams is now at 19-31 when they have to travel two time zones or more.

While rest of the league, road teams went 6-7 and a running total of 81-77 (How 'bout them Raiders!?)

For week 15, we have the following teams that will travel two time zones, or more:

<???> Cleveland @ Seattle

<???> Green Bay @ Oakland

<???> Denver @ Pittsburgh

<???> Miami @ San Diego

<???> Cincinnati @ San Francisco

<???> Arizona @ Philadelphia

Wow, 6 games!!

Cincinnati must be in re-building mode... Cueto, Chapman, now Frazier. What is the O/U 2016 total wins for Reds? 75? 70? 65??

Colon, 42, went 14-13 with a 4.16 ERA in 33 appearances (31 starts) for the Mets in 2015.

He reportedly will earn $7.25 million on the one-year deal.>

Dec-18-15  YouRang: <If this works out for Cincy, they'll go from 2016 Chumps to 2020 World Series Champs.>

Somehow, this reminds me of an NFL trade many years ago.

The L.A. Rams had a quarterback named John Hadl who had amassed impressive career stats, but his glory days were behind him. The Rams traded Hadl to the Packers for five high draft picks.

Hadl flopped in Green Bay while the Rams used the draft picks to build a very strong team -- making it to playoffs for most of the 1970s and to the Super Bowl in 1980 (though they lost to the Steelers).

I suppose there have been a number of one-sided trades like this though.

Dec-18-15  Deus Ex Alekhina: Here's an oddity. On the old TV gameshow show To Tell The Truth, in which 2 imposters and the real person were questioned by 4 panelists, in 1962, when the announcer asked "Will the real Bob Miller (NY Mets pitcher) please stand up?", two of the contestants stood up. Can you guess why?
Dec-18-15  Jim Bartle: There were two Bob Millers on the Mets?

  Phony Benoni: Oh, yeah, Lefty Bob and Righty Bob. Lefty was at the end of the road, and wasn't even good enough to stick with the Mets. Righty survived a 1-12 season to become a successful relief pitch for over a decade, particularly with the Dodgers in the mid-1960s.

Among other notables, TTTT also had Mrs. Ralph Houk as one of the liars.

Dec-19-15  Jim Bartle: While looking for another commercial I found this Vitalis ad with the 1969 Mets pitchers. Gary Gentry is one banished for greasy hair.

Dec-19-15  Deus Ex Alekhina: To Tell The Truth also had as one of its guest panelists actress Laraine Day, who was then married to Leo Durocher. Laraine was known as "The First Lady of Baseball" back then; she even wrote a book "A Day With The Giants". TTTT also had a hairdresser-turned wrestler, with one of the imposters, Y.A. Tittle, whom none of the panelists, including a young Johnny Carson, recognized.

  WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> What's the consensus around your neck of the woods on MSU in the Final Four Football, I can put some spare change on Sparty to upset 'Bama and win a big chunk of change.

Just like to know what the locals there think, you are under absolutely no obligation if my bet wins or loses.

  Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> I never like to give betting advice. My track record predicting games around here should be enough to prove why.

That being said, the talk around here is mainly that the spread is ridiculously high. That doesn't translate into a lot of confidence that they will win the game. In that situation, I'd say it's wiser to steer clear of MSU.

But I'm only saying this because you asked. I would feel terrible if you took my observation serioiusly and lost money because of it.

  OhioChessFan: I like MSU and the points and the odds. The alleged SEC dominance mantra has got to be impacting the line. I just don't see it.

On a related note, imagine last year if there wasn't a playoff, but the same one game final as previous years. If so, the final game would have been Alabama and Florida State. <No way> you could keep out the undefeated defending champs. The playoffs let the voters save face by letting FSU in, although seeding them outside the top 2. Most the world knew FSU simply wasn't that good and surely not one of the 4 best teams in the country. Regardless, if Bama had played FSU, Bama would have won by 49, and the SEC fans would have again carried on like Banshees about the SEC dominance. Alas for them, it didn't work out that way.

Dec-21-15  Jim Bartle: Teams in strong conferences are hurt with the current situation. The Big Ten had four good teams this year and not a single one finished undefeated. Meanwhile Clemson played in the weaker ACC and went undefeated, but didn't play any really tough teams in its conference. Toughest opponent was Notre Dame.

It means one more game, but I think eight teams should qualify for the national championship tournament: the champions of the five big conferences, plus the best three other teams.

Or you could go to six teams, with two teams getting a bye. But that might give too big an advantage to the conferences, with only one outside team getting in.
