Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Dec-23-15  Jim Bartle: Usually the first round of the baseball draft has more misses than hits. But look at 1985.

First picks: Surhoff, Will Clark, Bobby Witt, Larkin, Kurt Brown, Barry Bonds. Three great players, one very good one, one bust.

Later in the first round: Incaviglia, Magrane, Jefferies, Palmeiro, Walt Weiss.

  WannaBe: Week 15 Update on RTTTZMR!!

<LOST> Cleveland @ Seattle

<WON> Green Bay @ Oakland

<LOST> Denver @ Pittsburgh

<LOST> Miami @ San Diego

<WON> Cincinnati @ San Francisco

<WON> Arizona @ Philadelphia

So there, 3-3, could have been 4-3 if Denver did not blow that game in Pittsburgh (Denver scored zero points in the second half, while Steelers scored 21, and won by 7)

And get this, Denver did not score in the second half against Pittsburgh (L), Oakland (L), San Diego (W). The last game, which they scored in the second half, was against New England, and it was 4th qtr + OT to win that game.

Reminds me of the 49ers of last year, where the offense just got stuffed in the second half. Not sure if it's the play calling, or opponent's defence made adjustments and Denver could not figure out how to over-come that.

Anyway, it's now 22-34 when road team have to travel two time zones or more.

Rest of the league's road teams went 6-4 and that running total is now 87-81

For this week, we have:

<???> San Francisco @ Detroit

<???> St. Louis @ Seattle

<???> Cincinnati @ Denver

Gonna be interesting at post game interview for Belichek.

Lions are putting a world of hurt on the Santa Clara 4th & 9ers.

Dec-27-15  Jim Bartle: Niners have an interesting history since Walsh arrived in 1979. They have usually been a very good team (10-6 or better) or a bad team (6-10 or worse). They are rarely mediocre.

They have had only five 7-9, 8-8 or 9-7 over those 38 seasons, and they were-t 6-10 very often either. 23 years with 10 or more wins, 9 with six or fewer.

  WannaBe: Sunday Night Football for week 17 will be MIN@GB. Both team are now 10-5 winner to be #3 seed, loser <CAN> be #6.

Seattle is the other Wild Card team (already in), currently 9-6, if they win @ARZ (doubtful) Seattle & the loser of MIN/GB will be tied at 10-6

Seattle lost @GB earlier in the year (week 2), but won @MIN (week 13). All will be for moot, if ARZ wins, then SEA will be 9-7, and be #6 seed.

Seattle will then travel to the winner of GB/MIN and the loser of GB/MIN will go to WAS.

How you like them apples?

  Phony Benoni: I don't go in for "strategic losing" to face a supposedly weaker opponent in the play-offs. It can't be good psychologically. besides, if the team you're avoiding is so good you'll have to play them eventually anyway, so what's the point?

  WannaBe: Okay, how about this for craziness:

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/p...

If Denver should win and NE lose, Denver will be #1 seed in AFC.

If Denver lose and KC win, KC will win the AFC West, and Denver will be a Wild Card.

And how about this, both KC and ARZ have 9 game winning streak heading into the last game of the regular season.

Both have play-off spot clinched, and since ARZ have a guaranteed bye, how about Super Bowl 50 with ARZ and KC?

12 game winning streak vs 13 game winning streak (KC have no chance at a first round bye as they lost @CIN in week 4)? Huh? Huh??

How you like them pears?
