Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Apr-06-16  Jim Bartle: What was strange is the other team wasn't even arguing for interference on that play.

I guess the call was because he grabbed the second baseman's foot with his hand, but it didn't seem so bad.

MissScarlett: Re. Game Collection: US Open 1915, Excelsior = 16th Western Champ..

The ACB article you cite claims (p.171) that Fry forfeited his 'last game' vs Hokensen due to early departure, but your round-by-round schedule has Fry losing to Hokensen in round 10, before beating Plattern [sic] in round 11. Can you recall what you based this on?

Phony Benoni: <MissScarlett> Thank you for bringing this up; I obviously missed the statement in ACB. (As well as the misspelling of "Platten" which I have corrected.)

It appears that the statement in ACB is not entirely clear.

The pairings for rounds 1-9 of the tournament were published in various sources:

Round 1: Brooklyn Daily Eagle, August 18,1 915

Rounds 2-3: BDE, 8/19

Rounds 4-5: New York Sun, 8/20

Rounds 6-7: BDE, 8/21

Rounds 8-9: BDE, 8/22

I could not find a complete list of games for rounds 10-11, only a mention of the games involving Showalter and Whitaker. The list in the collection was from one of my infamous Berger Table reconstructions, which I did chiefly in an attempt to determine colors. (The reports always give winner's name first, regardless of color.) This matched all the known facts, but can't by itself be counted on for the pairings in the last two rounds.

However, we can make certain deductions:

1) Platten's last two opponents were Widmeyer and Fry

2) We have reports stating that Widmeyer played and defeated Whitker in round 11, the final round;

3) Therefore, Platten and Widmeyer must have played in round 10;

4) Therefore, Platten and Fry were scheduled to play in round 11.

It is uncertain how we should reconcile this with the statement in ACB that Fry forfeited his "last game" to Hokensen and left early. (It may be significant that ACD does not say "last <round> game"). A possibllity is that Fry and Platten agreed to play their game on the morning of August 21, giving Fry a chance to leave in the afternoon without having to wait for the next day. But I've found no other mention of the incident.

Should I stay up and see if the Padres can score? I kid, I kid. I know there weren't huge hopes in San Diego but how depressing is it to see your team go scoreless its first 24 innings of the season? And, yes, no team has been shut out its first three games.>

Dodgers 6, Padres 0 B8, we could be seeing history here.

Phony Benoni: Victor Martinez has homered in each of the Tigers' first two games.

Both times as a pinch-hitter.

And from opposite sides of the plate.

I'll definitely be checking in with the Elias people tomorrow to see if anyone has ever pulled that Trifecta.

Phony Benoni: Whooee, that trivia question needs some definitions:

1) What's a major league? Does the National Association of 1871-1875 count?

2) What's a save?

3) Is this when saves were officially counted, or does it mean saves retroactively assigned by history?

According to Wikipedia, the first Official Save was credited to the star of this video:

WannaBe: About two years ago, <Penguincw> started asking about tickets on the secondary market, and I started dabbling on StubHub.

Last year, I was able to re-sell tickets to two separate events and make a little pub beer money.

This year, I bought two tickets, to 6 separate SFG games, with the intent to make more pub beer money.

Last year, SFG did not accept ticket on smart phone StubHub app, this year, they do. About 3 weeks ago, someone bought my tickets to tonight's LAD/SFG game. (Fireworks night)

Right now, about 50 minutes to first pitch, prices on StubHub for this game have fallen 45% prices in the section that I had sold, is now lower than what the buyer had paid me.

If you are a savvy buyer, I'd stand outside AT&T Park, buy your tickets with 20 minutes to go before first pitch.

I just hope I can make some money on my remaining tickets, before everyone catches on to this.

Else I'm going to a lot of Giants game this year, against A's (2 games) Cubs (2), Dodgers, and Pittsburgh...

On top of the one game I'm going on the 22nd vs Miami to see Ichiro.

Penguincw: Ugh, great day of baseball yesterday for me, as my 2 favourite MLB teams, Blue Jays and Dodgers, blow the lead and lose it.

Toronto hit a grand slam to lead 7-2, but lose 8-7. All 3 losses have been due to the bullpen blowing a lead late.

Dodgers also lose a lead, losing 3-2. :( They also lead 4-0 at one point last game. I hate even years. Kershaw vs. MadBum today.

Since <Mating Net>'s forum is closed, I guess I'll talk hockey here as well (unless <WannaBe> wants to do it on his forum). Toronto and Edmonton tied for last in points in the NHL, go Devils and Oilers! Kings hoping to clinch the division, after winning a <huge> game vs. Ducks, go Avalanche! The Flyers want to make it to the postseason, but they lost in OT to Toronto, and now face the Penguins. But the Wings and Bruins want to make it too...
