http://www.espn.com/mlb/player/_/id... Who's there? GMan!! =) |
|
Aug-04-16 | | Party Animal: <saffuna> I say yes. I mean an out is an out but any catcher these days who can do 7/8's of a catcher's job description is ok with me. Besides taking a page from Joe Maddon's book you could have your 3rd or 1st basemen come charging in if necessary. |
|

 | | saffuna: <animal> I tend to agree, largely because I think most popups to the catcher could be caught by the first baseman or third baseman. A catcher absolutely has to throw well, though. Otherwise a man on first automatically becomes a man on second, and a man on second a man on third. |

 | | Penguincw: < Party Animal: The Cubs vs The Tigers in The World Series!! ; P > How about Cubs vs. Indians, 2 longest World Series droughts? Someone's gotta give. Of course, that's not including the Nationals, Rangers, Astros, or maybe even Mariners; all those teams have never won a World Series championship. < saffuna: [CATCHER QUESTION] > I agree as well, I would let him play. (same reasons as <Party Animal> listed) |
|
Aug-04-16 | | Party Animal: <Penguincw> Cubs Indians WS sounds terrific! I'd settle for Cubs vs anybody after the long drought we've had. ; P P.S. Last big chance was 2003... : O

 | | Phony Benoni: I remember Clint Courtney as being a catcher with that particular defect, and he lasted a decade at the big league level. Teams just have to compensate, much as a fleet center fielder might cheat a bit to help cover a lead-footed corner outfielder. I have to admit that a Cubs - Indians series would be interesting. I discount all those expansion teams that weren't even a twinkle in Happy Chandler's eye the last time the Indians won the Series. But it looks like the Indians are finally coming back to earth, so I may as well root for a repeat of 1945. (Or 1908, if you prefer.) |
|
Aug-04-16
 | | saffuna: But a Cleveland-Cubs World Series would lack certain tension, because it would be guaranteed one of the teams would break its long streak. I think we need just one of them to make it. |

 | | Penguincw: Hehe, <PB>, I know you would like to see a 1945 World Series matchup (and result) again. I don't know if you're interested or not, but I do own a copy of MLB 10: The Show, and am playing on RTTS (Road to the Show) mode, which is basically "create a player and make a career out of them" mode. My guy is in the majors, and the Tigers in June 2012 have the best record in the AL, so maybe they could win a World Series this time (the Giants are playing 0.400 baseball FTR). I wonder if I should create a 2nd player named "Steve Bartman" or "Billy Goat" or something, and have him play for the Cubs and try to win the World Series. :p ---
A Marlins-Cubs World Series would be nice to see too, but obviously that isn't possible, since both teams are in the NL. However, when the Astros moved over from the NL to AL, you know, in additional to that, the Marlins could've swapped places with an AL East team (like the Rays). Still, a Cubs-Marlins WS would be notable since they did face off in that 2003 NLCS, and in "Back of the Future", the Cubs did face off against some Florida team (even if the logo was different). |

Aug-05-16 | | Party Animal: The Cubs leading by 10 games in September of 1969 over confident put out a record with a song called Hey Hey Holy Mackerel. Then The Mets lead by Tom Seaver, Cleon Jones & company beat em out & won The World Series. I couldn't find the record but here's me on a barbecue after a six pack too many playing the song on trumpet. ; P https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fV3... |

 | | saffuna: The Cubs were ahead by 5 games at the beginning of September, then fell to 5 games behind as they lost 11 of 12 while the Mets won 11 of 12. The Cubs went 8-15 in September, but they still would have lost if they'd gone 15-8 as the Mets went on a 22-4 tear. The two teams only played twice, early in the month, with the Mets winning both to close to a half game. I think the Cubs more or less wore out. They played only day games at home, in the heat day after day, and Durocher rarely rested his regulars. |

 | | WannaBe: ChiCubs and Mad Maddon crew will be in Oakland for 3 games. (Hey, you never know when Mad Maddon will pull a triple switch, it is AL ball park, ya know!!) Friday Lester/Overton 10PM Eastern
Saturday Arrieta/S. Gray 4PM
Sunday Hendricks/Manaea 4PM
That Saturday game looks to be the best. May go to it. Looks like section 129 row 3 have seats available at $62 (with fees). That is so cheap, compared to ticket prices at other ball parks. You can't find any seats in the 100 sections for under $90 for weekend game(s). |

 | | saffuna: Didn't realize Sonny Gray has been so terrible this year. He came into the league like the next great pitcher and had an ERA under 3.000 until this year. |

 | | Penguincw: < WannaBe: ChiCubs and Mad Maddon crew will be in Oakland for 3 games. (Hey, you never know when Mad Maddon will pull a triple switch, it is AL ball park, ya know!!) > I'm still waiting for Joe Maddon to do a move such as put a left-handed thrower at C/2B/3B/SS (as a southpaw, I would love to see that). I recently played in an organized, amateur baseball league, and my coach did make me play a few games at 2B. I never actually had a chance to make that typical 4-3 groundout, but I was involved in plays such as P4, 5-4 forceout, 4-6 forceout, 3-4 groundout, and I also saved a run after (with a runner on 3rd) pitcher threw a ball, catcher's return missed the pitcher and I was able to use my <right> hand to <just> grab the ball before it sailed to CF. :p |
|
Aug-05-16
 | | saffuna: I understand why infielders have to be righthanded. They would lose a crucial half-second getting set to throw to first, more if they were fielding the ball moving to their right. But catcher? The only knock I see against a lefthander is the throw to third base, and that is compensated somewhat by being quicker to first. |
|
Aug-05-16
 | | WannaBe: Majority of batters are right handed, if you have a lefty catcher, and want to throw to second (on a steal), the batter would be (more) in your way than a righty catcher. No? |
|
Aug-05-16
 | | saffuna: That's also true, definitely. I don't think it's enough to eliminate a lefthander. Plus it would make it easier to buzz a righthanded batter with the throw back to the picher, Roseboro-style. |
|
Aug-05-16
 | | WannaBe: <saffuna> Here's one take on it: http://members.tripod.com/bb_catche... <The Last left-handed throwing catcher to play the position was Benny Distefano who caught 3 games in 1989 for Pittsburgh.> |

 | | Penguincw: < saffuna: I understand why infielders have to be righthanded. They would lose a crucial half-second getting set to throw to first, more if they were fielding the ball moving to their right. > Agreed. The way I see it, if an infielder needs to throw to their left (which is most of the time), a RH is ideal, and vice-versa. So if a LH were to play 2B/3B/SS, the most ideal position is 2B, as a 4-6-3 DP would be easier. 4-5 or 6-5 putouts are pretty rare. FTR: Only one of my plays was actually a throw. With a runner on 1st, less than 2 outs, there was a pop up to swallow RF. I went back, and even though I wasn't planning to catch it, I was waiting for the RF to come in and call me off, but he never did. The ball dropped, but I was able to get the force at 2B. Did I make the right decision there in going back but not calling for it? < WannaBe: Majority of batters are right handed, if you have a lefty catcher, and want to throw to second (on a steal), the batter would be (more) in your way than a righty catcher. No? > I'm sure someone can verify it using facts, but there are a fair amount of switch-hitters, who will more likely than not, bat left-handed (due to more right-handed batters), so I think it's about 50-50. But of course, if you just ask some people on the street what hand they bat, you're pretty much overwhelmingly going to hear a lot more "R" than "L" or "S". In baseball, it's skewed for strategic purpose. But then I would like to ask the question: if your strong/dominant/whatever hand is your right hand, in baseball, would you bat left or right? Right seems the knee jerk answer, but if you bat left-handed, your right hand is at the bottom (does that mean more power/control/whatever)? |
|
Aug-05-16
 | | WannaBe: <Penguincw> Have heard that theory many-a-times, and they all say better control on the swing. (Throw Right, Hit Left). Example (besides baseball players) would be Phil Mic
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_...
He is a natural righty, but plays left. Not sure how many tennis/ping pong players are natural righty, but swings lefty. |

 | | perfidious: <Penguin....I'm still waiting for Joe Maddon to do a move such as put a left-handed thrower at C/2B/3B/SS (as a southpaw, I would love to see that)....> Last time I recall--perhaps the only one--seeing a left-handed throwing player at an infield position other than first was Don Mattingly in a game at Seattle: http://www.baseball-reference.com/b... I always played OF, sometimes first or pitched (all very badly), but never the other IF positions. No doubt I should have been turrble as a right-hander too. |
