 | | WannaBe: BoSox went from a team no-hit bid, to a 3-3 tie in a blink of an eye. Gotta love baseball. |

 | | Phony Benoni: You'd never get away that minimum height strike zone. The ACLU would be all over it in a second There is a theory that an average chess player, if given the right to move twice in a row at any point during the game, could defeat a grandmaster. Well, maybe. You'd have to be patient about using the extra move. But would having a guaranteed walk be enough compensation for having a roster with one player short? Wait, make that with one player less. Maybe they could instead rule that yo can no loner pinch-run for a pinch-hitter. I can see it now. Batter clears the bases with a triple -- except that Gaedel gets forced out at second. |

 | | saffuna: <But would having a guaranteed walk be enough compensation for having a roster with one player short? Wait, make that with one player less.> A guarantee of getting a player on base at a time of your choosing in the game? Absolutely worth a roster spot. Of course then you need to use another bench player as a pinch runner, which makes it tougher. |

 | | WannaBe: If you are Bochy, you'd put in a pitcher to pinch-run after that BB. I'm gonna take photos of the new G. Perry statue tomorrow. My buddy Steve and I will be there plenty early (90 minutes) and I'll put it up on Shutterfly for everyone. =) |

WPA/3+C (win probability added with three-plus catchers in the lineup)
LOH-Wins (length of hair wins)
rfFSR (right field fan scouting report)
wOPS (weighted overhead press)

 | | Penguincw: Woo, Jays down 6 runs (actually 5), go into a rain delay, score 12 unanswered runs to win it. Glad the rain delay didn't cause the game to be over and a Yankees win. In other news, Ichiro, prior to yesterday, had a hit in every current MLB stadium except for CIN - he just got a hit there last night. Have fun at the game <WannaBe>! Go Pirates! ;) |
|
Aug-17-16
 | | saffuna: What is this strategy to take out a starting pitcher who is pitching well after a rain delay? Yankees took out Pineda after a rain delay, after going five and giving up no runs. Looks like it cost them the game. |
|
Aug-17-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Probably a matter of "stiffening up", though I don't know the exact physical mechanism involved. But it seems a real concern, not just a cliché. You'll se pitches taking warm-up tosses during a replay or an injury time-out. And I've seen pitchers come out after their team scored a lot of runs and they were unable to "loosen up" again. |
|
Aug-17-16
 | | saffuna: Could be. But it seems to happen all too often.
I've seen it done if the pitcher has only thrown an inning or two, and then they start him again the next day. That makes some sense. |
|
Aug-17-16
 | | Penguincw: Probably. A lot of pitchers tend to have "routines" or whatever, and all these delays mess up their timing. I guess this also explains why (unless it's deep in extra innings), relief pitchers tend to pitch no more than an inning. < I've seen it done if the pitcher has only thrown an inning or two, and then they start him again the next day. That makes some sense. > A more extreme example was Greinke in 2012 (when he was with the Brewers). He started on Jul/07, and got ejected after 4 pitches because he threw the ball on the ground in frustration following a close play at first. The next day, he lasted just 3 innings, giving up 3 runs. He got the ball again the next game (Jul/13, after the ASG), lasting 5 innings, giving up 5 ER. So in a matter of 7 days, he threw 8 IP, and gave up 9 runs (1 unearned). |

 | | Penguincw: Looks like MLB in the future could have robotic umpires: http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/531579... My opinion: any calls not made at the plate (ex. safe/out, except at the plate, fair/foul, etc.) are easy to determine (if an umpire gets it wrong, just go on instant replay). Having robotic umpires there probably won't make much of a difference. However: The HP umpire has the hardest job out there, having to call balls and strikes, among other things (ex. HBP, foul tips, etc.) These also seem to be very difficult to call sometimes (no guarantee a robot would fare any better than a human). I think most people would like the calls to be right, but they don't mind a blown call here or there. FTR: Umpires in video games aren't that much better, although I believe it's a glitch in a game (ex. tag isn't even applied yet the runner is out). A few years ago, I did envision a future with <virtual> umpires. So say a ball lands fair, the virtual umpire could just stick his arm out to indicate fair. The thing with virtual umpires, unlike robotic, the umpire doesn't have to move out of the way, as the ball can just go right through it. |
|
Aug-17-16
 | | saffuna: It wouldn't be hard to have a machine which indicates whether a ball was in the strike zone. But people won't go for that. We like the human, somewhat inconsistent decision making. |
|

 | | WannaBe: Boy, did the Giants made it an interesting 9th. Down 2 runs, got bases loaded with no outs and scored one. Lost the game 6-5. All of Pittsburgh's run were scored in one inning. |
|
Aug-17-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Sumthin' good happening around here, but it won't last. Now with Damnable Anibal pitching. You see, Anibal Sanchez is one of those real estate pitchers. If his location is good, he looks great and gets a lot of strikeouts. Bad location, and the ball covers a lot of real estate. |

If you can't see the pictures, please let me know. Not featured are McCovey and Mays. Apparently in order to have a statue, you have to be in the HoF. (According to my friend who works for SF Giants). |

 | | WannaBe: <saffuna> I have seen the pitching 'style' of Marichal, it's Perry that I don't know. Did the statue (face?) not look like him? I have no idea. His playing days was before my times. In other news, Red Sox GM (ex-Detroit GM) Dombrowski complaint of early Thursday game starting time: http://www.theoaklandpress.com/spor... |
|
Aug-18-16
 | | WannaBe: I was going to ask the question: "Why didn't Dombrowski ask Baltimore to move the game time up?" Then I remembered, the game was on ESPN last night, so TV (money) made the schedule un-move-able. Ironically, it was rain-shortened to just six innings. Still don't know when the game was officially called. And when BoSox eventually got to Detroit. |
|
Aug-18-16
 | | saffuna: Perry's face on the statue just looks generic, doesn't look much like him at all. |
|
Aug-18-16
 | | saffuna: I think teams should not be required to play a day game after playing a night game in a different city. It's hard to imagine how these teams play well at all with all the travel and so few days off. |
