Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

saffuna: Can anybody find the record for most runners picked off in an inning? I know there's a two, but is there a three?

saffuna: Yikes. Tippy Martinez did it in 1983. Lenn Sakata had to play catcher, the Blue Jays thought they could steal on him easily, took big leads and got picked off.

<BLUE JAYS 10TH: LOWENSTEIN CHANGED POSITIONS (PLAYING 2B); ROENICKE STAYED IN GAME (PLAYING 3B); SAKATA CHANGED POSITIONS (PLAYING C ); AYALA STAYED IN GAME (PLAYING LF); STODDARD REPLACED MCGREGOR (PITCHING); Johnson homered; Bonnell singled to center; COLLINS BATTED FOR BARFIELD; T. MARTINEZ REPLACED STODDARD (PITCHING); Bonnell was picked off and caught stealing second (pitcher to first); Collins walked; Collins was picked off first (pitcher to first); Upshaw singled to second; Upshaw was picked off first (pitcher to first); Tippy Martinez picked off three runners at 1B in this inning; infielder Lenn Sakata caught six pitches in the inning; 1 R, 3 H, 0 E, 0 LOB. Blue Jays 4, Orioles 3.>

saffuna: I watched a video of the 7th game of the 1968 World Series. A lot of things were different back then.

The sun was shining.

Almost no pitches in the dirt.

High strikes.

Two complete games.

Batters seemed to swing a lot more at the first pitch, especially the Cardinals.

No stepping out of the box.

Two runners (Brock and Flood) picked off in one inning by Lolich. Brock took a huge lead and begged for a throw, then took off for second and was tagged out on a dubious call.

Bob Gibson batted for himself in the 8th inning trailing 3-0. I can't imagine that happening today.

Very little analysis and no second-guessing by the announcers, Mel Allen and Harry Caray. They just called the game with few other comments. No discussion of Mickey Stanley at shortstop. When he short-hopped a line drive, Caray asked "Are you sure he's never played shortstop?" And nothing more. He whiffed a hard shot later, and no questioning from the announcers.

No questioning of leaving Gibson in, or Gibson either. No comment when Lolich and Freehan were clearly upset a pitch was not called a strike.

One minute of commercials between innings.

There was once a Commissioner named William Eckert.

saffuna: The SABR biographies are good and extremely detailed. I was reading about 1960s Orioles pitcher Dick Hall, whose pitchers looked fat but batters couldn't hit them often.

Anyway, the biography contains this true statement:

<He didn’t pitch at all in the Orioles’ World Series win that year over the Dodgers, and he wasn’t surprised when Orioles’ General Manager Harry Dalton called him at 1 o’clock on the morning of December 16 to tell Hall he’d been traded to the Phillies for a player to be named later. >

None of the relievers pitched at all for Baltimore in that Series except Moe Drabowsky. Games two through four were complete game shutouts, and in game one Drabowsky came in in the fourth inning and finished the game, giving up just one hit.

So no, he didn't pitch, but it wasn't as if he was passed over. He was one of five pitchers who never got in a game.

A nice quote from the story:

<In 1963 he won five games and saved 12, but his most impressive stretch occurred between July 24 and August 17, during which Hall retired 28 men in order. “That was my first perfect game,” Hall said. “I never had one before and this one took 25 days.”>

Aug-29-16  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, how are ya doin'man? I'm worried about The Cubs... They just dropped 2 out of 3 to the Screwhead dodgers...

Aug-29-16  Travis Bickle: <WannaBe: Dodgers could have swept the Cubs, but Jensen had a blown save on Friday. That patch-work of starting pitching have held up even without Kershaw.> That's because that Screw Head 3rd baseman Javier Baez threw to the wrong base in the eighth inning and lost an inning ending ground out... In a scoreless game! It gives me headaches...

saffuna: You have to relax <travis>. The best teams lose games and series. They're headed to a 100-win season even if they fall off a little, have given up the fewest runs in the league (not easy playing at Wrigley), and have scored the most except for Colorado (and they get a big asterisk).
Aug-29-16  Travis Bickle: <saffuna> Ok Saffy, I'll try to relax... But all day yesterday The Cubs hitters were hitting lazy fly balls to short outfield spots. I hope that trend doesn't continue...

WannaBe: Lookin' at the remaining team/schedule for LAD and SFG, it's about even...

LAD/SFG have 6 more games 3 home and 3 road.

LAD have to face teams with winning records on the road, @MIA and @NYY

SFG have @ChiCubs but get St.L at home. Both teams will get the usual NL West teams, SD, ARZ, COL...

Could be a close one come Oct.

saffuna: Looking at today's starters I see J. A. Happ, 17-4. With a 3.18 ERA. I hadn't even noticed him before. He's pitched pretty well, but the Jays must have scored a ton of runs for him.
