Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

saffuna: Here's a game from 1964 where the Giatnts lineup led off with Snider, Mays, McCovey and Cepeda. Four Hall of Famers. And Gaylord Perry pitching.

Didn't help. They got four hits and no runs off Milwaukee's Hank Fischer, who I had never heard of.

Also, check out the Braves leadoff hitter Eddie Mathews.

Well, Roberto Alomar (elected into the HOF in 2011) was the son of former MLB player, Sandy Alomar Sr.

Although he might not be the first either.

saffuna: Amazing. And Snider hit .210 that year.

There's a sentimental but really nice video of a Milwaukee kid on the field before this game. Willie Mays asked if he wanted him to autograph his glove, and the kid said, "No! This is for Braves only."

He met Warren Spahn again thirty years later at a signing event, and they ended up talking an hour and a half.

You have the Chic to start with and that may appease Mr. Wrigley.

Isn't that the point, to make your rivals upset?

BTW: Check out this quote from the Tigers' FB page about Cabrera:

"Miguel Cabrera posted his 16th game with three-or-more hits last night, going 3x5 with a run scored and a double. He now has 205 three-hit games in his major league career, which is tied with with [sic] Harold Baines and Michael Young for 58th in MLB history."

Hmm, tied for 58th. Is there some significance with this, because I'm not following?

  saffuna: This is so irritating.

Tim Kurkjian of ESPN says "David Ortiz is having the greatest final season in history." Technically true, maybe, but it's not the same as saying the best season at age 40, because it isn't.

Besides, it's so silly, because any number of great players could have retired earlier with better years but chose to keep playing.

And what about Sandy Koufax in 1966? 27-9, 1.73. I don't care how big the strike zone was or how big Dodger Stadium is, that's a great final year.

Ted Williams had an incredible year at age 40. He just kept playing two more years.

Barry Bonds, age 40: .360, .600 on base percentage, 45 home runs (in 370 at bats), 101 RBI, 129 runs. But he also kept playing.

Penguincw: The Dodgers have no-hit the Giants six times before, but the Giants have never no-hit the Dodgers.

Well, let's hope the Dodgers get a hit. Even if they lose, taking 2 of 3 from the Giants is good enough.

Looking ahead, Dodgers will face the best team in baseball (CHC), while the Giants face the worst (ATL).

Yes, that's the only reason why I brought it up.

Dodgers showing interest in Phillies players. First Utley from last year, now Ruiz.

Yes, it was; trouble for Koufax was that he was through because of the circulatory problem.

No, but with his tremendous speed, I should not be at all surprised by anything from him in the outfield.

Don't retire at all. :)

< Toronto have re-acquired D. Navarro, they must really like ex-Dodgers catchers. =)) >

He was also an ex-Jay. He left the Jays since he wanted to play for a team that allowed him to be an everyday player, but with Avila coming off the DL, maybe not anymore. With the Jays' 6-man rotation, he'll probably catch 1 or 2 starts/rotation. I imagine this move is done to give Martin some more days off, as he's probably going to play every postseason game, should the Jays make it (Thole+Dickey might not make the postseason roster).

Of course, the Jays (like other teams), love Oakland players as well. ;)

saffuna: I posted this last year when Jason Heyward was a freee agent about to get a huge contract:

<I read something that said Heyward was rated by advance stats to be one of the ten best players in baseball. Even if that is ten best non-pitchers, I don't understand it.

Heyward hits .290 with 15 homers and 80 RBIs. You can pretty much find rightfielders on a tree who can do that. He's supposed to be a great fielder, but I just don't see how that can move him to the top even if he's a combination of Clemente and Kaline out there.>

He's played full-time for the Cubs this year, and has hit .225 with 6 homers and 34 RBIs. That's poor for a shortstop, embarrassing for a rightfielder.

Cubs are playing great, but I bet they wish they'd never signed Heyward.
