Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: I can't seem to find G. Easterbrook's Tuesday Morning Quarterback online. =(

saffuna: There were two Monday Night games. It's thrown him behind schedule.

Easterbrook's columns are such a respite from all the super-techy, coach-speak columns at the big sports sites, where each writer tries to outdo the rest.

Phony Benoni: I think only six members of the 2003 Tigers will still around for the 2006 pennant winning team.

saffuna: That 2006 AL Central "race" is a good example why I hate the wild card. Minnesota and Detroit went down to the wire, two excellent teams that ended up with 96 and 95 wins respectively.

And nobody cared; it didn't matter. Whichever team came in second would claim the wild card (basically determined with 10 days to go), so there was no real suspense.

saffuna: The only holdover starter from 2003 to 2006 was Brandon Inge, who moved from catcher to third. Bonderman remained a starter and Rodney became a key reliever.

Looks like they signed OrdoƱez, Rogers and Rodriguez as free agents, and brought up Verlander and Granderson from the farm system.

I remember thinking Ivan Rodriguez was just going for the cash when he signed with Detroit, that he didn't care about winning. That was about as wrong as it could be.

And that same year, STL made it with just 83 wins, and won it all over DET.

Of course, with the implementation of the 2nd wild card, now teams actually do have more incentive to fight for the division.

Of course (I say that a lot, don't I?), it can work either way, such as how last year PIT won an MLB 2nd best 98 games, and lost in the WC game to the hottest pitcher in the league.

I'm sure there's arguments for and against no/1/2/more wild cards, but I would just like to list my 2 cents:

I like the 4 wild card system better than the 5 wild card system, although I'm not really a fan of the "no teams from the same division can meet in the LDS" or "wild card automatically gets 4th seed" rules.

5 wild cards might be best, but then it's kinda like NBA/NHL, and teams might have even less incentive to fight. The season might take longer, but I think reducing the # of games should be done regardless.

Or you know, 3 wild cards (6 teams) can be done too, NFL style...

saffuna: I still far and away prefer the system in place from 1969 to 1993.

Four six-team divisions. Division champs play off. Winners go to World Series. Great pennant races, such as the incredible Atlanta vs. SF run in 1993, when the Braves' theft of McGriff helped them roar back in the last month and win by a game.

Wish Dodgers offence can get something going. Maybe Maury can get on base & steal a few bases and get a run for LAD.

How about this. The Elias Sports Bureau reports that Jacoby Ellsbury & Didi Gregorius are the 1st Yankees since July 14, 1957 (Moose Skowron, Tommy Byrne) to go back-to-back in a game they didn't start. That was the last year the Dodgers played in Brooklyn!>
