Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Probably a matter of exceeding expectations. Indians certainly did. Cubs were expected to be good.

Maddon still should have won.

Nov-16-16  Travis Bickle: Yo Phony, I just parked my cab in front of the house.. After I finished my long 14 hour shift of driving I had to make a stop at the mall. I bought some must haves for my Cubs collection..

I bought the World Series 2016 Cubs hat & matching tea shirt with all the names of the 2016 players, coaches & manager on the back! Plus Mr Benoni I bought a plaque for my chess study of The Chicago Cubs autographed Trophy with player signatures!

It really takes the edge off a hard night driving through the filth & violence of Chicago streets... Before I hit the sack I'm gonna pour some vodka on my cornflakes & watch the cartoons...

Your pal,
Travis

Actually, I think this is Porcello's "freak "year. He's always been dependable rather than spectacular, and it would surprise me if he ever approached this performance again.

WannaBe: OK. Time for some beesball award trivia...

Max Scherzer is now the 6th (pitcher) to have won Cy Young in both leagues.

Name the other 5. =))

Nov-17-16  Deus Ex Alekhina: Something screwy with the voting system? Election rigged? Just read super-model Kate Upton's tweet about the Cy Young: " I thought I was the only one allowed to (bleep) Justin Verlander" Yowza.

WannaBe: As far as I can tell, NFL is the only major sport (league) that does not use 1st - 2nd - 3rd - 4th - 5th voting system/method.

This 'controversy' (with Kate Upton and her comments) is because Porcello had less 1st place votes than Verlander, but Porcello were able to make that up with 2nd and 3rd place votes.

Plus two Major League Baseball writers from Florida (Tampa) didn't have Verlander listed on their ballot.

(Why is it always Florida when an election of any sort and controversy starts?? Enquiring minds want to know.)

saffuna: It's perfectly reasonable not to include Verlander as one of the three best. 16-9, 3.00 ERA isn't overwhelming good.

Porcello had great run support and the same ERA, but still, 22-4 is hard to ignore.

There have been numerous cases of the award winner not getting the most first-place votes.

Being a Blue Jays fan, I can tell you the 5th one is Roy Halladay.

Regarding the AL Cy Young winner, Porcello would've been my pick (WL record can be very appealing you know). I would also like to consider Happ and Sanchez contenders as well, but you can only have 3 finalists.

Also, some guy, who is 6/6 in predicting award winners this year (rather that, or he just knows the results in advance), is calling his shot again for MVPs: Bryant and Trout edging Betts, by placing 1st or 2nd on every voter's ballot. We shall see...

saffuna: I didn't remember Halladay had won in the NL.

And for the Al Cy Young, what about Zach Britton. 0.54 ERA in 67 innings.

WannaBe: Pretty scary if you think about it..

Trout 25 (5-years MLB experience) and then K. Bryant 24 (2-years MLB experience).

Trout already have 2 MVPs, Bryant just got play-off and regular season MVPs. When free agency come around for these two young men, what will the market rate be?

40M/year? 45M/year? A-Rod signed $275 million over 10-years with the Yankees back in 2007.

In 2015 Dodgers paid Kershaw 32.5M, Detroit paid Verlander 28M, Philadelphia paid R. Howard 25M...

The Cubs get to keep Bryant an extra year because they waited to a certain date to bring him up last year. Some people were upset with the Cubs, but it made sense to me.
