Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Penguincw: Ah yes, finally MLB does that. Of course, it does remove value for the ASG, now that home field advantage is no longer on the line, but I guess the issue with fan polling and all is no longer a big issue. And I doubt that attendance and audience will decrease as a result of this, so good move MLB!

WannaBe: ASG is no more than a (fancy) exhibition game. If it's a tie after 9, 10, 11, 12th innings, so be it.

I don't need (to see) a definite winner, especially when the game have 30 position/pitching changes, and takes longer to play than an US Election recount... =))

OhioChessFan: I didn't care the year the ASG ended in a tie. I never understood the uproar. What, you want to hurt a pitcher letting him go too long, or a field blow his arm trying to pitch?

WannaBe: Big moves by BoSox, they also acquired reliever Thornburg from Milwaukee.

And they sent George Ruth to Yankees for 5-packs of hotdog, 2 boxes of baseball, 3 gloves and a 12-pack of beer.

Penguincw: Question that came to my mind: is it possible for a single pitcher to be have 2 blown saves in a single game?

Let's say Albert enters a game in the bottom of the 9th, his team up 1-0, gets the first guy out, then surrenders a solo shot. Manager (who's probably Joe Maddon) puts him in the OF, Bob comes in, gets the next 2 batters. Albert clearly gets a blown save.

Their team then takes a 2-1 lead in the top of the 10th, Bob is the pitcher of record, Albert and Bob switch places, as Albert pitches in the bottom of the 10th, gets the first guy, then surrenders a solo shot. 2nd blown save? 2nd save opportunity?

Dec-12-16  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, do you have your Christmas shopping done yet?

Phony Benoni: Here's the ML Definition of Blown Save:

http://m.mlb.com/glossary/standard-...

Whenever a pitcher enters the game in a save situation and the tying run scores on his watch, it's BS.

So obviously a team can have more than one blown save in a game, but as for your situation: I'd call it a Klem., after the famous baseball umpire who came up with the perfect answer to abstruse baseball situations:

"When it happens, I'll decide."

Phony Benoni: Travis, I could be in trouble. I always say that I can't buy Christmas presents until the Lions make the playoffs, since I won't be in Christmassy mood if they don't. This normally works quite well, since their rare appearances aren't clinched until after Christmas.

This year, though, I could be in trouble. We'll see if my luck holds., but they are becoming one of those average teams having a miracle year.

Right now they have the #2 seed in the NFC, and the Local Sports Idiots are pointing out they are only two games behind Dallas and have the Coowboys on the schedule. Hubris, guys, hubris.

WannaBe: <Phony Benoni> Better ask your credit card company for an increase. Lions are currently #2 seed in NFC.
Dec-12-16
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: Yeah, but their two games before Christmas are eminently losable, @NYG and @Dallas. Plus, QB Matt Stafford has torn ligaments in a dislocated middle finger on his throwing hand, which means he can no longer inspire his team by Saluting the Opposition. So I may be safe, but just barely.

He'll probably play, though. Everyone in Detroit thinks they're a hockey player.

But I'm not ruling out anything. If the Cubs can end their drought, why not the Lions?

I know I've made (complaint) posts on this before, where West coast team(s) have to play at East coast, and it's an ESPN 8PM (Eastern) start time.

Time to move TB up to Montreal? TB doesn't seem to be a great place to have baseball, and there are still a lot of baseball fans up in Montreal since the Expos left (would be great for Canadian baseball).

< New MLB 2018 start time and flight hour regulation. >

You could also have fewer games/season, which would decrease the likelihood of having 2 games really close together, time wise.
