Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

  WannaBe: WAS/SFG base-brawl, my opinion:

Strickland threw at Harper for hitting 2 HRs in 2014 playoffs, (2.5 years ago). According to the local KNBR radio announcers and what nots.

Strickland did not throw at his head. He can easily claim "The pitch got away from me."

So the guy hit you, is it an honour(?) for being retaliated? Is it old-time baseball? Is it the "Un-written" rules of the game?

I actually think Harper's in the wrong for trying to throw the helmet...

In hockey, (I know, different sport), when 2 players are gonna fight, everything is off, gloves, sticks, helmets, jerseys, skates, cups, <EVERYTHING>.

Okay, maybe not the skates... But you get my drift. Base-brawl are more amusing than fights.

Hockey, now, that's a different coloured puck, all together. You can youtube Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche, those are (some) old-time hockey brawls.

WannaBe: So I had to back and look up Ventura v. Ryan fight.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIZ...

There was one main event and follow-up minor skirmish. Ah, good ol' days.

Forgot that Bo Jackson was on the team for Chicago, Kirk McCaskill (ex-Angels), Mickey Hatcher (ex-Dodgers), so many (famous) names on the back of those jerseys...

WannaBe: But the #1 brawl, at least according to MLB.com, is ATL/SD game. In 1984.

Came across this classic clip between SFG/St.L with R. Craig and W. Herzog jawing and a yuuuuuuuuuge brawl.

WannaBe: Remember that 4-0 LAD game where the pitcher (Hatcher) threw 2 innings and did not get a save?

Last night, BOS/ChiSox game, Kimbrel (BOS) entered the game when it was 11-7 (4 runs, if you are bad at math), 2 outs in the 8th.

Gave up one walk, got 2 strike outs, (all in the 9th inning, he got a ground out to finish up the 8th) in his 1 1/3 innings of work.

BOS scored 2 more top 9th to make the final score 13-7, Kimbrel got a save.

WannaBe: Cubs went 0-6 on the West Coast road trip, swept by LAD and SD.

San Diego?! Seriously? A team that is currently 22-33?! Which means Pads were 19-33 when the series started.

Time to push the panic button in Chicago.

Thank goodness Ryan spent a couple of years in the bullpen; otherwise, the record would be even harder to chase.

But Kershaw ends up getting 14 in 7, Dodgers tie it in the 9th, win it in the 12th.

Game officially took 3:57, just under 4 hours thanks to the new intentional walk rule...

WannaBe: Crazy LAD/MIL game, MIL scored 5 bottom 7, LAD scored 5 top 9th, final 10-8 LAD won.

The even 'crazier' thing? 10 runs on 10 hits for LAD, 8 runs on 8 hits for MIL.

I've also noticed that pitchers that tend to have a really bad start in the outing after their no-hitter. Let's see how he'll do on June 8th in Pittsburgh.

But regardless, this Monday, free pizza from Domino's! Too bad I'm not American...

On a side note, a very emotional no hitter for Volquez, as today would've been ex-teammate Yordano Ventura's birthday, and of course, he also dedicated this no-no to Jose Fernandez.

Penguincw: And I was wrong. Volquez was actually strong in his encore performance, tossing 7 shutout innings giving up just 3 hits while striking out 8 in a win. His no-hit streak does end at 10 innings.
Jun-16-17  Latviandevil: I am searching two games of our GM Arturo Pomar in US Open 1954, rounds 3 and 9, this one against Great Nicolas Rossolimo. Also Crosstable/games of North Central Open Ch. in Milwaukee 1955 (94 players). Pomar dis many simultaneous in 1952, 1954 and 1955 too; I have some information about but I will appreciatte more !. ANY HELP ?
Jun-16-17

Phony Benoni: <Latviandevil> I am sorry, but I cannot be of much help. I carefully checked the sources available to me for games from New Orleans 1954, and Pomar's round 3 and 9 games could not be found.

This is a tragedy (especially in the case of Pomar's important win over Rossolimo), but is also not unusual. Games in United States Swiss System tournaments are generally not well-documentd or even preserved, and we are probably lucky the record is as good as it is.

As for your other questions, I doubt I could find any more information than you have now. The US Open is the only area about which I have any special expertise at all.

Finding information about Milwaukee 1955 or Pomar's simultaneous exhibitions would require a lot of digging through local newspaper, or through regional chess publications if these could be found.

I have reposted your inquiry at Biographer Bistro (kibitz #16787) in the hopes that you can find a little bit of help there.

Best of fortune in your work.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8n7...

All 3 of the Tigers' outs that innings were on incredible plays. Iglesias also had a nice charging play where he flipped the ball into his hand and Upton robbed what might've been a homerun.

Jun-17-17  takchess: Based on your collection and commentary on the London System, I am going to give it a try. I am primarily a 1. e4 player. It seems to be played a lot by members of my local chess club. Cheers, Jim

Phony Benoni: <takchess> I believe you have made that comment about the London System in the wrong place. I have no such collection, nor do I recall ever commenting about the opening.
Jun-17-17  takchess: Thanks. You are correct. Although I confused you with White Shark, I did play like DIRP today. It seems in learning some new openings the London System and the Benko, I have forget the one I normally play the King Gambit. Cheers, Jim
