 | | FSR: <Phony Benoni> I remembered another game from the 1979 U.S. Open. Ove Kroll had White against Jeremy Silman. The game followed Larsen vs Spassky, 1970 for at least five moves, but at some point soon thereafter Kroll (of course) deviated. The game ended in a short draw. |

 | | WannaBe: Tim Kurkjian looks into the crystal ball:

 | | saffuna: Concerning speed of play as Kurkjian addresses it, let's have some sort of limit on the number of pickoff throws. Say only two unsuccessful throws for each runner per batter. On the third unsuccessful throw the runner moves up a base. No throwing the ball around the horn after an out? That takes about six seconds and is nice to look at. The biggest problems are time betweeen innings (commerrcials) and pitching changes. How about only three warmup pitches for a pitcher coming in mid-inning. |

 | | Penguincw: < let's have some sort of limit on the number of pickoff throws. > I like that idea. A little while ago, I think I had a radical idea that any pickoff throw, successful or not, counts as a <ball>. With 3 balls on the batter, I think a special rule could be made to adjust for that. This would encourage runners to take bigger leads, and possibly steal more bases, and more runs. < No throwing the ball around the horn after an out? That takes about six seconds and is nice to look at. > Agreed. It probably takes about 6 seconds for the batter to go to the on-deck circle to the batter's box anyhow. < The biggest problems are time betweeen innings (commerrcials) and pitching changes. How about only three warmup pitches for a pitcher coming in mid-inning.> I'm sure plenty of time can be saved with 1 less commercial/break. Pitching changes, I think it's like a basketball game, with all those fouls and timeouts near the end. It probably has to stay. It's part of the strategy of the game (but so was the intentional walk, but whatever). And warmup pitches, perhaps fewer is good, but I'm sure a lot of the time is the pitcher trying to get his footing properly on the mound. Looking at elsewise in the article, I like the idea of a pitch clock. There's actually a never used rule in the book that says with no runners on, a pitcher has 12 seconds to throw the ball, otherwise a ball is called. Enforce that rule. Again, the rule can be adjusted for when runners are on. Batters, do you really need to adjust your batting gloves after taking ball 1? Probably not. Limit the amount of times a batter is allowed to step in and out of the box. Runners on base to start the 12th or 13th inning? I personally like the long marathons (maybe because I'm not playing). I don't like this idea, but it may be necessary. Retractable roofs to prevent rain delays? Definitely yes, although this will be very expensive. Shift needs to stay. It can be hard to enforce anyhow. I'm sure those who are fans of baseball appreciate the game the way it is (minus some small changes). I'll like baseball 'til it feels more like MLB The Show than an actual game. I don't think these possible future rule changes would attract many fans (probably would lose more fans than gain, especially with the salary increase it mentions). Most of these changes are probably meant to benefit people who have shorter attention spans (in that case, choose a different sport) or anyone who is trying to maximize as much money as possible... Ooh, a butterfly. |

 | | WannaBe: Re: Commercials, 2 breaks per inning (unless pitching change), minus one or two break (game's over after top or end of 9th). One commercial would be on average, what? 20 seconds? So 40 seconds per one inning of play, multiply by 8.5 gets you 340 seconds. On average there are about 7 pitching changes per game(?) that's another 140 seconds. Total time saved: 480 seconds, or 8 minutes, approx. Ball-park figure, pun fully intended. |

 | | WannaBe: Re: Roof... I am fully supportive of this idea. Over the weekend (and today) very high temperature in the Bay area and inland, Sacramento was over 103. (SFG's Triple-A club is located at Sacramento, and they had a Sunday afternoon game... Ugh!! That's just not right.) NYY at OAK, box score said game time temperature was 90, I think it was higher on the field. Roofs would be very nice, not only to your multi-million dollar investments, I mean players, but also for the fans. And those medical personnel treating heat-related fainting. Further, it will also prevent BAL and WAS GMs whining at each other. http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/... |

| Jun-21-17 | | FairyPromotion: Mr Moody,
Counting on your understanding, I would point out to a mistake. In your GotD collection yesterday's GotD should be listed as <Thrill of the Hunt> instead of <Thrill of the Chase>. Cheers, |

 | | saffuna: And then, an error, a wild pitch, and a loss. |
|
Jun-21-17
 | | WannaBe: Baseball, what a cruel game. Max lost his no-no and then went on to lose the game 2-1, both runs <NOT EARNED>, OUCH! As a consolation prize, he got a CG.

 | | Penguincw: I've seen it many times before. A pitcher is carrying a no-hitter/perfect game late into the ballgame. As soon as the first baserunner reaches, or the first hit is given up, it quickly goes downhill. Of course, Scherzer only gave up 1 more hit after that, but still sucks. Could be worse though. What happens if you <do> throw a no-hitter, 0 ER, and still lose (which has happended before, maybe not the "0 ER" part). On a somewhat related note, how come HBP doesn't count as WHIP, but things like IBB do? I always wondered that... |

 | | WannaBe: In the pitcher friendly Dodgers Stadium, NYM@LAD 4 game series, 2 teams combined to hit 22 HRs. 22!!?? |
|
Jun-23-17
 | | Penguincw: Despite that, the Dodgers swept the Mets. Kershaw did pitch Game 1, and he got the win, but gave up 4 home runs. Pitchers were trying to get in on this series too. Yesterday, with 2 outs bases loaded in the 7th, Dodgers up 1, Pedro Baez came up to bat vs. the Mets' best reliever, Jerry Blevins, and Baez walked in a run, on <4> pitches... |
|
Jun-24-17
 | | Penguincw: That's gotta hurt for the Jays. Up 4-1 in the bottom of the 9th, Royals down to their last strike, they come back and score <4> runs off 3 relievers to walk it off. However, none of those relievers were the Jays' closer, Roberto Osuna, who is apparently battling mental issues. However, the Jays did use their LOOGY (.333 avg off of lefties) and Grili's 6.97 ERA. :| But at least their pitching staff isn't like the O's: 20 straight games giving up 5+ runs. |

 | | WannaBe: Unfortunately, Ottavino does not break the record, two pitchers have uncorked 5 WPs <In one inning>!!! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lis... F. garcia and R. Ankiel. I remember Rick, poor young man was fighting his controll when he got to the majors. |
|
Jun-25-17
 | | saffuna: Ankiel and Steve Blass, pitches whose nerves got the better of them. Ankiel couldn't thow a strike, then went to the centerfield, where he could hit the third baseman's glove perfectly from 200 feet away. |
|
Jun-25-17
 | | WannaBe: Thanks to ESPN, here's something I missed...
COL uncorked 5 WPs, 4 by Ottavino, one by Anderson. LAD, not to be shamed at home, also uncorked 3, all by McCarthy. Combined 8 WPs! |
