 | | WannaBe: Other thing I learned from ESPN, never, ever, ever, in NY or after relocating to SF. Giants have never, ever lost 50 or more games before July 1st. SFG, after today's loss, 27-51. Remember in 2016, at the All-Star break, SFG owned the best record in MLB, 57-33, 24 games over .500 SFG then finished 2016 with 87-75, which means the team finished the second half with 30-42. Funny thing is, same as 2016, SFG will start the second half, after All-Star break at San Diego, in 2017. |

 | | Penguincw: < A pitch was so wild, 2 runners scored!? > It's happened before I'm sure. In G7 of the 2016 WS, Lester uncorked one of those. There's been a WP where 3 runners scored (helped with an error, and a pitcher not paying attention). And it was done by yes, the Rockies. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pth...
I'm sure 4 runners can score on a WP (uncaught third strike). |

 | | Penguincw: <Giants>
Well you know, it's not an even year. Although MadBum going down isn't helping them. And well, the regular season isn't where they perform their best (same for MadBum), but watch out. If they make the postseason, they make a ton of noise. MadBum, if his left arm ever gets injured, I can see him become a hitter too, like Ankiel. Kyle Drabek, a former Jays pitcher and son of Doug Drabek last year signed a contract to play SS for the Giants (and 3B for ARI). So far, nothing. |

 | | saffuna: <I'm sure 4 runners can score on a WP (uncaught third strike).> That brings up a question I've asked before. How late can a batter swing and it's still a strike? Say a pitch gets by the catcher with two strikes. The batter then swings and runs to first base. Is that a strike? A while ago a pitcher bounced a pitch twenty feet in front of the plate and headed for the backstop. The batter took a practice swing and the ump called it a strike. |

 | | WannaBe: 2 runners scoring isn't that rare, earlier this year Kershaw uncorked one that allowed 2 runs. If Kershaw can do it... =)) |

 | | Penguincw: R.I.P. to Anthony Young.
The former Mets pitcher dies at the age of 51 due to brain cancer. Most famous for losing a lot of games despite a low ERA. http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/ml... |

 | | WannaBe: So, I was reading an article on this MIN guy, catcher, who's from Gilroy, CA (Garlic Capital of the World!! I drive past the city every time I go to/from LA) who have pitched 9 times this year. His pitches have been clocked at 62 MPH, (definitely don't have to worry about being pulled over for speeding. Most interstates in the US are 70 or 75MPH limit...) Hence, it raised a rather interesting question, what is the slowest speed you can pitch a ball, and still have it reach home plate? | | WannaBe: So, apparently my goal for this MLB season is to beat on the "Save" dead horse. http://www.espn.com/mlb/playbyplay?... Top 9th, COL at bat. SFG leading 5-3. (That's a 2 run lead, kids, in case your app didn't tell you that.) Ground out, fly out, Strickland comes in (I have no idea why... Lefty vs lefty? Righty vs Righty? Righty vs Lefty? Lefty vs Righty? No freakin' clue) Got a fly ball to end the inning/game. Game, Set, Match. Got a save. Say Whaaaaaaaa?????? |

 | | Penguincw: Well you know, it's Bochy. He likes to get creative with his managing. But it's also the Giants, who was famous last year for having a really bad bullpen, and no 1 guy they can rely on for the typical 3-out save. Gotta mix and match the best you can. When the save was first created, getting a save was actually worth something, as "savers" usually had to pitch multiple, tough innings. Nowadays, it's there to pad the pay cheque and stat line of the closer. Not too great, but that's the way baseball is, and I probably wouldn't change it (hopefully Manfred agrees with me). |

 | | WannaBe: Here's something you don't see everyday...
MIL (J. Nelson 5-4 3.50 ERA) at CIN (H. Bailey 0-1 43.20 ERA) Yeah, not a typo, 43.20 ERA. Thus far in the season 1 2/3 inning, 8 R, 8 ER 3BB and 2K |
|
Jun-29-17
 | | WannaBe: This Kershaw's dude is doing it again, vs LAA 5IP 2H 1R 0ER 9K 1BB. I swear, if he doesn't get that outrageous ERA down below 2.36, back to single-A ball. Not kidding here. |
|
Jun-29-17
 | | WannaBe: Oh, yeah 64 pitches, too... |
|
Jun-30-17
 | | saffuna: OK, Kershaw has thrown first-pitch strikes to 16 of 20 batters. Wouldn't that suggest batters might be more prepared to swing instead of go deep into the count? |

 | | Penguincw: < OK, Kershaw has thrown first-pitch strikes to 16 of 20 batters. Wouldn't that suggest batters might be more prepared to swing instead of go deep into the count? > He usually throws that first pitch a fastball too. It's a dilemma: you want to get a deep count to chase Kershaw earlier, but the first pitch might be the best pitch you get all at bat. I remember this was a topic of discussion during G1 of the 2015 NLDS. But not every team has Daniel Murphy. Looking at the stats, the Dodgers' bullpen is super solid, as they lead the senior circuit in ERA, AVG and WHIP, among other stats, so if I saw a good pitch, I'm going after it, because once (if) Kershaw leaves the game, you're not having that much easier of a time. |

 | | WannaBe: LAD's management team's freakin' genius. They've juggled the rotation such that Kershaw will pitch the Sunday before All-Star game (hence he will not play in the exhibition game). And with the team not due to resume playing until Friday (in Miami, the site of this year's All-Star game!) Kershaw will be able to pitch Friday with his regular scheduled 4-days rest. Technically it will count as back-to-back start. =)) A. Wood may be in line to pitch an inning or two, he's 8-0 1.86 ERA (Lower than Kershaw!) 79K and 0.92 WHIP. (He's also a strange one, throws Left, but bats Right...) http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/... |

 | | Penguincw: So close! 1 strike and 1 out away from a no-hitter, and Mike Foltynewicz gets his no-hitter bid spoiled. Good thing he got taken out right away, as pitchers pitch really bad after giving up that first hit. No pizza for Monday though (it would be the 3rd of July). The Braves aren't going to make the postseason this year, so a win doesn't matter to them. Luckily the Braves did get 2 more in the top of the 9th, otherwise, imagine if ATL was actually contending, and Folty gives up the tying run... With this hit, OAK remains the team with the longest streak without being no-hit, as they managed to get at least 1 hit in every single game since 1991, when 4 BAL pitchers no-hit them. The 2nd longest streak is BOS (1993, Bosio). The 3rd longest streak is WSH/MTL (1999, Cone). This means that the Washington Nationals have never been no-hit. |

Jul-01-17
 | | Penguincw: < LAD's management team's freakin' genius... > I'm sure a lot of teams have done this. If they're contending, they might want to start that ace as often as possible. This is how Greinke (MIL, 2012) started 3 straight games. Could Kershaw start 35 games this year? I can see it happening even more now, now that the ASG isn't worth anything. Previously, some teams might've wanted to send their starter to the game, in hopes of them pitching an inning and helping their league secure home field advantage, but not anymore. Of course, if a team is hopelessly out of contention, go ahead, let them have fun. < He's also a strange one, throws Left, but bats Right... > Ahem. |

 | | WannaBe: This day in history, Milwaukee Braves and San Francisco Giants decided to give relieve pitchers a night off and starters went 16 innings. http://www.baseball-reference.com/b... |
|
Jul-02-17
 | | saffuna: 4:10 for the whole 16 innings. |
|
Jul-02-17
 | | WannaBe: Methinkth, A. Wood was not selected, because MLB knows Kershaw's not gonna pitch, and will select Wood as replacement. 2 pitchers Jansen and Kershaw, with Seager and Bellinger. Turner is one of the last 5 to be voted by fans, so Wood will replace Kershaw, most likely. |

 | | Penguincw: (Marichal vs Spahn)
What an epic duel. There was also this 26 inning matchup in 1920, that ended in a 1-1 tie due to darkness. Nowadays, managers will be crucified if they try to do that to their starters. The game is definitely different in more ways than one since that matchup. A present day equivalence would probably be Lester vs. Cueto from last year's NLDS. A few years ago, Lee and Cain duelled, pitching 10 and 9 shutout innings, respectively. Giants won 1-0 in 11. (Giants sure like these long duels) Although if it's say, a winner take all game, I can imagine guys like MadBum go 200 pitches if he needed to; Marichal and Spahn pitched more than 200 pitches. But it wouldn't take less than 4 hours... At least it didn't last 50 innings: http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/... |

 | | Penguincw: Meanwhile, the Jays get 1 representative, Smoak, who is carrying this team at this point. There seems to be some debate on whether him or Hosmer gets the start at 1B, but most seem to agree Smoak > Hosmer. As always, there are players that should and should not have made/gotten the team/start/final vote, but every team's gotta have a representative. Plus, this game is meaningless now, and I'm sure with injury replacements (ex. Trout) there will be more players that will travel to Miami next week. |
|
Jul-02-17
 | | WannaBe: Smoak was voted in, and hence he will start. God forbid, barring any injury between Monday until Sunday... |
