Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Penguincw: < Smoak was voted in, and hence he will start. >

Ah yes, I forgot about that. I did see some Royals fan argued that Hosmer should've gotten the start, although even ignoring fan voting, Smoak is superior to Hosmer. The guy argued that Hosmer should have the "opportunity" to "defend" his ASG MVP "title" and leads Smoak in stats such as SB (3-0).

---

I also forgot that for the 3rd straight year, the ASG is held in an NL park, and it will be 4 after next year. :| Last year, SD hosted the game in an AL year. The last time the Padres hosted it was 1992. 7 teams have not hosted the game since (or ever): TOR, CHC, OAK, TB, MIA, WSH and LAD (!). I'm guessing these teams haven't had a chance yet because they have small markets, are relatively new, have horrible ballparks (OAK, TB*) or haven't changed ballparks since (TOR). Still would be nice to see an ASG in TOR (the AL is due).

But if the AL wins this year's game, it'll be the first time 1964 the NL has not lead the series.

*TB is pretty close to MIA however

Penguincw: I still think there's a good chance Kershaw won't pitch in the ASG. Although if there's a replacement, I'm sure Alex Wood (9-0, 1.83) would be happy to pitch for the NL.

A lot of rule changes though, especially with rosters. I liked the 34 man roster, but oh well, probably won't even notice the 2 fewer players.

saffuna: This Statcast now measures the speed of home runs coming off the bat.

Aaron Judge's homer yesterday is the hardest yet measured, at 188 mph. It was a line drive, hit at a 17 degree angle, while most are 30 degrees or more.

That makes me think that homers may not be the hardest hit balls. They are hit at an upward angle off the bat, so they aren't hit as a ball hit square, at a 0 degree angle.

So a chest-high line drive must be the hardest hit ball. But i haven't seen the speeds of those measured.

Now I am totally confused on these rules and changes every freakin' year.

Penguincw: Results are in for the ASG Final Vote, and Moose and Turner win, as both S. Californians will be heading to Miami. Both are spectacular in their own way (Moose has been hitting homers recently, and JT still has a very high average, but not enough at bats), but LAD and KC formed alliances with one another, which definitely helped. And interestingly enough, LAD and KC will face off tomorrow to end the first half.

Too bad Logan Morrison didn't win, or even got invited to the Home Run Derby. I'm sure all the attention will be on Stanton vs. Judge, but Morrison does have more HR than say, Sanchez (NYY).

WannaBe: ?? I want my guys to rest, not play in a silly ASG!!!!!

But the plus side (if there is one), LAD will start the second half at MIA. So... They have to fly there anyway. After their home-stand with ARZ and KC.

isn't the MLB ASG the only one that matters? (determines home field advantage in world series?)

Phony Benoni: It's much better to have several representatives at the All-Star Game. That usually means you're contending.

Penguincw: < I want my guys to rest, not play in a silly ASG!!!!! >

Well I'm sure all managers, GMs, etc. of contending teams don't want their stars to be playing in this game, but they're still players, gotta let them have some fun (and for the fans). Obviously their biggest fear is that they get hurt, but I'm sure it's not much different than letting their stars go wherever they want on their own time, or off days, or whenever there's not a game, and hope they don't get hurt, or worse, killed. (RIP to Fernandez, Ventura, and others)

Although in previous years, I'm sure some managers didn't mind, as it meant their stars could help them compete for home field advantage, but now, there's really no point. Unless you want an ASG that's purely of stars from teams that are not contending.

< refutor: ...

Not anymore. The problem is, you can't have a game that's both exhibitional and competitive. (this is the 1st year they removed home field advantage from the ASG, in a long time)

WannaBe: Looks like LAD will start B. McCarthy instead of Kershaw next game (Fri) at Miami...

This will give Kershaw an extra day of rest from regular rotation (wussy...)

Kershaw also have the most victories at the break for LAD since some other guy named O. Hershiser, in 1988.

Penguincw: The last time home field advantage was not rewarded for winning the ASG, was 2002, which ended in a 7-7 tie after 11 innings, after both teams ran out of bench and bullpen options.

Now, just like G7 of the 2016 WS, this game goes to extras. Both managers not hesitant to empty their benches, but they still have bullpen options. Hopefully they don't run out and it becomes a repeat of 2002-2016.
