Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Penguincw: < Hey, how about that genius D. Roberts putting K. Maeda out of bullpen! >

I remember seeing some graphic in early August on the Dodgers' rotation, and it showed like <6> pitchers, all with an ERA under 4, and a winning record.

My thought when seeing it, how are the Dodgers going to be able to use all of them? Of course, the only way was to put some of them in the bullpen.

One idea is to go with a <6> man rotation. That is, every 3 games, you have 2 starters assigned to that game, and you ask each "starter" to go 3 innings each. From the 7th onward, you go to your regular bullpen.

Something tells me this could be very common in the regular season, in the future...

Penguincw: I see though many (except for TBS) wanted the game to be scheduled at 1 pm, but TBS refused (may or may not be a legit reason). Oh well.

But in baseball, every day makes a difference. Now WSH can go with Stratsburg and Gio on normal rest to save their season, instead of Roark. However, CHC can also go with Hendricks and Lester to close this series. And there's also the bullpen.

Though I'm sure that pitching is not the thing that is costing WSH...

WannaBe: Some guy, Joe Sewell only struck out 4 times in a season for Cleveland back in '25 and '29.

A. Judge have struck out 16 times thus far in the NYY and CLE series. Oy vey.

WannaBe: Now that CLE have been eliminated, that got my interest regarding regular season longest winning streak and post season 'achievements'...

List of winning streak: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_...

1. 26 Games (with a tie) NY Giants 1916. Finished fourth in National League, 7 games back of Brooklyn Robins

2. 22 Games CLE 2017, eliminated at Divisional Round

3(tie). 21 (also involved a tie game) Chicago White Stockings 1880. Best record in National League (hence, I guess, Champions)

3(t). 21 Games Chicago Cubs 1935. Lost to Detroit in World Series 4-2

5(t). 20 Games St. Louis Maroons & Providence Grays 1884. This is probably the most interesting of the streaks

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1884_...

Grays played in National League, Maroons played in Union Association (First and only season for this league)

In what was known as World's Championship Series, Grays beat New York Metropolitans 3-0

5(t). 20 Games Oakland Athletics 2002. Won AL West by 4 games over LAA, eliminated in Divisional Round by MIN.

8(tie). 19 Games Chicago White Sox 1906. Won world series

8(t). 19 Games NY Yankees 1947. Won World Series.

8(t). 19 Games Chicago White Stockings 1885. Second most interesting of the streaks, as White Stockings of NL took on St. Louis Browns of the American Association for the Championship.

The series ended 3-3-1 with Game 1 tied and called after 8 innings due to darkness, Game 2 was awarded to White Stockings because Browns disputed an umpire decision and refused to continue play after 6 innings.

Both teams claim to be THE Champion.

A team that won 22 straight during the season.

  Phony Benoni: Silly question:

If a batter ball hits the foul pole, it is considered a home run even it it bounces back on the field or into foul territory.

So, if a kicked ball hits the goalpost, shouldn't it be considered a good kick regardless of where the ball winds up?

WannaBe: Definition of a good kick, is the ball must go in between the posts...

I am certain you already know this. =))

Oct-23-17
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: But why is it defined that way? There seems to be a difference in the philosophy of the games.

Both have lines, posts, etc. marking the boundary between "in play" and "out of play". In baseball, if you are on the boundary you are in play ("fair" ball). In football, if you are on the line, you are out of play.

But, even so, there is an inconsistency in football. If a kicked ball goes directly over the goal post, it's good. If it's a foot lower. hits the goal post and bounces back, it's no good. Why should the physical presence of the goal post be allowed to make a difference?

WannaBe: Field goals in NCAA are reviewable, unless it's over the top of the upright: https://www.sbnation.com/college-fo...

Not sure about NFL, a line have to be drawn somewhere, regarding the height of the uprights.

The crossbar, is 10ft above ground, same height as the rim in basketball, two uprights are 20ft, making it a total of 30ft. (Probably wouldn't hurt to extend the uprights another 10ft to avoid this issue)

Football (American) is probably, if not, the most confusing sport in the world. The only other item that comes to mind is the game of cribbage.

In soccer, hockey, field hockey, lacrosse, water polo, the ball/puck must be completely in the goal to be counted. There's no breakin' the plane.

In football the plane (end zone) can vary, if it's a scoring situation, it's 90 degrees to the field (break the plane).

But on a punt, you can bat the ball back as long as the player and the ball have not touched the ground of end zone. So, in theory, the plane is 179.9999 degrees.

In baseball a player or the ball can be completely in foul territory and a play can be made that affects the game. (Don't know about cricket...)

saffuna: And why is it called the "foul pole" anyway, if a ball hitting it is fair?

  WannaBe: Strange Points Differential stats...

2-5 Colts (-103) and 3-4 Arizona (-73) have worse PD than two 0-7 teams, Cleveland (-66) and 49ers (-63)

4-3 Jacksonville (+73) have better PD than 5-2 New England (+29), Pittsburgh (+31), Kansas City (+46), Minnesota (+27), and just barely with LA Rams (+74).

5-1 Philadelphia (+43) will play tonight, unless they outscore Washington by 30 points, 6-1 Eagles will also have less PD than Jacksonville.

Go Fig.

Phony Benoni: It's called the "foul pole" because the corresponding line in the field is the "foul line". When they start calling that the "fair line", they can have "fair pole".

saffuna: I am so tired of hearing radio and TV announcers desccribe why the pitch was so bad when a batter hits it hard. Major league hitters can't hit a good pitch?

Kuechel's pitch to Turner last night certainly wasn't bad. And Turner really didn't hit it that well (37% angle).
