Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Stonehenge: The Britbase PGN in the Golombek-Tartakower fourth round game has this:

the third and fourth rounds were both played on 30 December in order to complete the schedule by the following Saturday, though the Times tells us that some games were played in advance to avoid having two games on one day (but doesn't mention which ones).

Phony Benoni: <Stonehenge> While it would be better to have direct evidence from a British newspaper, I have located an Associated Press report dated <December 29> and printed in various newspapers. This version is from the "Boston Glob", Monday, December 30, 1935, page 6:

<"BRITISH CHAMPION LOSES, FINE RETAINS CHESS LEAD>

<"C. H. Alexander of London, defeated W. Winter, British champion, in the third [sic] round of the international chess masters' tournament here today. Reuben Fine of New York led the field with a score of 2-0.

"Dr. S. Tartakower of Poland played to a draw with H. Golombek, London. Three games were adjourned.">

The report then list a summary of the games which matches those played in what we know as Round 4.

This seems good evidence confirming the statement in the "Guardian" that all the games in round 4 were played a day early on Sunday, December 29. Even saying the games were from "round 3" indicates the report assumed that because it was the third round played.

Third round on the 30th, fourth round on the 29th :)

Phony Benoni: <martin moller> I'm not completely sure what you are asking about.

I see that the biography on your member page has a number of links to Chessgames players pages, for instance

Andreas Mathiassen

If you're asking how to add to this existing list, that can be done through the Pteferences page. First, go to the player's game page and copy the address. Then, on your Preferences page, paste that link intro the desired spot in "Your chessgames.com Bio."

When finished, click the <Update Profile> button at the bottom of the screen. The link should be added to your profile biography, and will appear the next time you search for your profile page.

If that is not what you're asking, I'm sorry for wasting your time. I don't know a lot about technical matters like this.

Yorkshire Fog: Hello Phony Benoni. May I ask what you think of my comments on A Zapata vs Van Wely, 1995 and Y Fleites vs B Lopez, 2001?

Please delete this if you think it is Baloney. I shall understand.

Thanks.

Phony Benoni: <Yorkshire Fog> There are easily tens (or even hundreds) of thousands of games that could be described with <Stranded in the Middle>. I was assuming the intended game would be between the players named, Van der Wiel and Yusupov.

Yorkshire Fog: Thanks, Phony Benoni. Of course you are right about <Stranded in the Middle>, but I am not sure your assumption about the players' names being the key to the game score is well-founded.

I use Mozilla Firefox as my web browser, and when I hover my mouse over any HTML link (usually printed in blue) a small hint window pops up at the bottom of my screen with the text of the URL for that link. In the case of the Zapata vs Van Wely game in my previous post the link is to <www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1147758> and the blue text <A Zapata vs Van Wely, 1995> is just a label.

The link to the GOTD on the Home Page yesterday was to <www.chessgames.com/perl/chessgame?gid=1147785>, but this link was broken as there is no game in the database with gid 1147785. The same is true of the <Brutal Bruci> game on 9-Aug-18 where the broken link was to gid 1258217, and the gid of my suggested candidate game is 1258222.

The HTTP link can also be seen in the HTML source code for the Home Page, usually starting at Line 117. I took a snapshot of the source code yesterday showing the broken link and can post a copy of a relevant extract if you are interested.

I think the similarity between the gid numbers 1147758 and 1147785 is too close to be a coincidence. But that is just my opinion, and suggestive evidence is not proof. I am not quite so confident about the Bruci game.

Have you also noticed that neither of the games with broken links appears in the GOTD Archive, and the usual pun/title header has not been carried forward to any of the candidate GOTD's for 9-Aug-18 and 17-Aug-18. I suspect the admins have a driver program which takes a gid number for a given day and then automates the GOTD process, but if the gid link is bad some of the process fails.

Thanks for reading this, and sorry to be so verbose. Delete if you wish.

Phony Benoni: <Yorkshire Fog>. I'm glad you explained your reasoning, since it had not occurred to me. Your scenario is entirely possible, but I don't know if it helps with identifying the game: there are simply too many possible transpositions or types. And identifying the game is what I'm really interested in doing.

I've been keeping tack of GOtDs and the daily puzzles for over a decade, so I have a lot of time invested in these collections. But now, the puzzle has been screwed up for three weeks, and it's the second time this has happened to the GOTD. I recognize these are not important problems in the current situation, nor am I agitating to get them fixed now. But it's disheartening on a personal basis.

Ic <CG> isn't gincluding the games in their archive, then I suppose I shouldn't include them in mine, so I'll remove them and won't try tis sort of thing again.

By the way, being an old-style punster I was drawn to the idea that it would be a Van der <Wiel> game because of the song "Stuck in the Middle With You" by stealers <Wheel>. But it appears we're not doing that sort of thing any more.

Yorkshire Fog: <Phony Benoni> Many thanks for your thoughtful comments. I'm aware of your many collections which are a fantastic resource, and I hope you don't get too disheartened to carry on. Maybe it's best not to guess at what we can not be certain about, and just wait until matters are cleared up.

In the meantime I too am not complaining, and will try to be patient, since there is very little I can do to help in this difficult situation. Kind regards.

Annie K.: <Phony> The daily features lately have been coming out of an emergency queue; they are really rejects, never intended to be published. Daniel would top up the queue with his actual selections, but he usually didn't put in more than a week or two's worth in advance. We have long since passed the point of GotD's he actually wanted featured, and I don't know when the queue may run out altogether, if Sargon doesn't fill it up himself soon.

If some of those "reject" games listed far back in the queue had been deleted since, it would explain the breakages.

For the purposes of your wonderful collections, I'd ignore this period altogether.

Phony Benoni: <Annie K> Thanks for your explanations. The idea that a link was broken because it had been replaced did occur to me, but I wasn't aware of the exact mechanism.

I think I will get rid of the repeated puzzles, since those can actually be deceiving. However, the GOTDs generally seem fine to me. Yes, the "puns" have morphed into short descriptive phrases, but this is actually somewhat refreshing. But I will stay alert for future developments.

Thanks again for writing.

Tabanus: Hi <PB>, what's the status of Game Collection: Ostend 1906?

Are all the games in? Guess what: I'm alone at home for 3-4 weeks, and could make an effort now.

  Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> There's a couple of problems/

(1) The game Marco - Janowski, from round 8, was not added. I resubmitted, but it has not yet been added.

2) The game Janowski - Cohn, from round 9, was mistakenly submitted as Janowski vs W John, 1906. (W John instead of W Cohn). I've submitted two correction slips, but this has not been changed.

Tabanus: Hmm. It may never be changed, who knows.

Probably best to wait. Let me know if you need any help, but after September I'm not alone any more :)
