Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Another one for you King Hunters. Black's monarch travels fron g8 to b8, then takes the Great Circle Route back to h3 before calling it a day.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> I've posted a question for you at L T Magee vs J Holland, 1948

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

   Jun-06-22 W Ritson-Morry vs G T Crown, 1947

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

  Phony Benoni: Yeah. You can make a case for advancing if the fly ball is the first out, but with two outs it's foolish hustle.

Well, maybe if the opposing pitcher is prone to throwing wild pitches...

  Phony Benoni: I hope you all will forgive one more chess game. Or perhaps I should call this a game which follows the rules of chess, but is not really a chess game.

[White "David Moody"]
[Black "N.N."]

<1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6 4.Nxf7>

I probably shouldn't play the Cochrane Gambit in a correspondence game, but I wanted to get things over with quickly and pay more attention to the Tigers.

<4...Kxf7 5.Bc4+>

I might play 5.d4 next time, except that there is not likely to be a next time.

<5...d5 6.Bb3 Nxe4 7.Qh5+>

<7...Kg8???>

Oh, well. Lucky in chess, unlucky in baseball.

<8.Qxd5+>

This is what I like to call gratuitous sarcasm.

<8...Qxd5 9.Bxd5+> 1-0

Saving White a terrible choice ater 9...Be6: (a) Should he just take the piece back with 10.Bxe4; (b) Should he go for the risky exchange grab with 10.Bxb7; (c) Should he take the bishop and sacrifice any further enjoyment of the game?

Oct-08-09  Jim Bartle: Today my daughter accompanied a friend, a journalism student, who is writing a story on the people who play at chess tables on a boardwalk near our house. I went along, and naturally started watching games.

It was the first time I'd seen "real" games in at least a year--games on a board rather than a screen.

I'd forgotten how different it is, how much harder it is, to play with real pieces and a real opponent. I felt lost.

Oct-08-09  dzechiel: That 9th inning was one of the most bizarre that I have ever seen. Not a good day to be a Card's fan.
Oct-08-09  Jim Bartle: What a dummy I am! I watched it sort of halfway, didn't realize it was the ninth.
Oct-08-09  Jim Bartle: "With the bases empty in the ninth and St. Louis on the verge on tying the series, Holliday charged in on James Loney 's liner to left field. But the ball hit his midsection and dropped to the grass, allowing Loney to reach second."

That's a new definition of "midsection."

Oct-09-09  technical draw: What no comments on the Yankees game? All tied up in the 8th inning. Olympic chill time.

  Phony Benoni: We're fair around here. No comments on the Twins game either.
Oct-09-09  technical draw: It's always a Yankee's game, Phony, lol!
Oct-09-09  technical draw: See what I mean about the olympic chill? One strike away from retiring the side and the olympic chill hits the young Yankee pitcher and he walks the man. Brrrr!

  Phony Benoni: Hey, I'm rooting for the Twins. It always looks better if your team loses to the eventual champion. Besides, I want to see a Colorado - Minnesota World Series. Network advertising executives deserve all the grief they can get.

  Phony Benoni: Nick Punto again! That guy has got to be the peskiest .230 hitter alive.
Oct-09-09  Jim Bartle: Rivera gets touched up in the 8th. The SI jinx strikes again.
Oct-09-09  Jim Bartle: Nice play by Brooks there.

And did I hear a few boos sent in Rivera's direction? What a bunch of ingrates.

  Phony Benoni: Talk about the Tigers choking, while true to some extent, denigrates what the Twins did by going 16-4 the last three weeks of the season.
Oct-09-09  Jim Bartle: 16-4! Didn't realize that.

What is it with this umpire tonight? How dare he call balls and strikes according to the rulebook?

  Phony Benoni: Where did they get this Bizarro Alex Rodriguez who actually hits in October?
Oct-09-09  Jim Bartle: Just what I was thinking.

Nathan: "But the scouting report said this guy can't hit in October?"

  Phony Benoni: You can't stop Nick Punto. You can only hope to contain him.
Oct-09-09  Jim Bartle: What's Cabrera wearing, a glove or a magnet? He did the same thing against Detroit in the 9th. Line drives right at him.

  Phony Benoni: Of course, they walked Jeter to set up that double play.
Oct-09-09  technical draw: Damon is always bad in the clutch. An opportunity wasted it'll be hard for the Yankees to win now.
Oct-09-09  Jim Bartle: That ball was fair!!
Oct-09-09  technical draw: You know, guys, I'm one of those fans that close their eyes in critical situations. You the "I can't look" type. I cover my eyes but then I peak, and that's watching the game on TV!
