| Oct-09-09 | | technical draw: Man, the Yankees always deliver. That's why I'm a fan. It was a Yankee that said, "it ain't over til it's over". (actually I invented that saying, lol!) |

 | | Phony Benoni: Game of the Day:
http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... The Brooklyn Atlantics were later reincarnated as Dick Stuart. |
| Oct-10-09 | | dzechiel: Just got back from watching the Angles take the second game from Boston. Good pitching by Weaver and the relievers. I hope the Angels can close it out on Sunday. |
| Oct-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: I thought the Brooklyn Atlantics became the Los Angeles Pacifics. Speaking of bad fielders, the Giants had a player when they came to SF named Andre Rodgers who was considered a good hitter, but a horror at shortstop. They traded him to the Cubs, where he continued to rack up impressive error totals. |
| Oct-10-09 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> Once upon a time, Andre Rodgers was the only British subject playing in the major leagues: at least it said so on his baseball card. I remember it because the little cartoon baseball player on the back was wearing a monocle and sipping a cup of tea. It seemed none of the guys the Giants had playing the middle of the infield back then ever quite filled the bill. Andre could at least hit: more than you could say for Don Blasingame. |
| Oct-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Let's see: Daryl Spencer, Eddie Bressoud, Blasingame, Danny O'Connell, Jose Pagan, and Chuck Hiller (who could hit a little). They cemented the tradition with Hal Lanier and Tito Fuentes in the years of struggle with the Dodgers, leaving the Giants with in effect three pitchers spots hitting in the lineup. Bill James once named Lanier the worst hitting regular (who played several years) in the past fifty years. The Giants got so frustrated they traded their excellent catch Bill Haller to the Dodgers for 2B Ron Hunt, the human bruise. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> Did a quick check. Rodgers was the first player from the Bahamas in the major leagues. There were quite a few British-born players back in the early days of baseball, but few in the middle third of the twentieth century until the Latin American and Caribbean influx began. Maybe the most famous British subject was the Scottish-born Bobby Thomson. <JB> Found a game where Dick Stuart played third base! http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... It happened in the Giants' 6th, and was an extreme example of a McCovey shift. Willie was coming up in a clutch situation, and the Phillies manager shifted shortstop Bobby Wine over to first, thrid baseman Dick Allen to short, and put Stuart at third where he would be out of harm's way. The other extraordinary thing in the inning was Willie Mays, who hit 52 home runs that year, sacrificing a runner from second to third with none out. Didn't those guys know how to play baseball? |
| Oct-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Giants fans really liked Rodgers, had a very forgiving attitude about his fielding. But SF fans loved EVERYTHING about the Giants at first. They particularly took to the wave of rookies in 1958: Davenport, Kirkland, Cepeda, Spencer, Schmidt, and then McCovey the next year. They were a little reticent about Mays, because they had been led to believe he walked on water, would hit .370 with 50 homers and 130 RBI. When he hit .350 with 29 homers, people were disappointed to find he was a great ballplayer but not a demigod. |
| Oct-10-09 | | suenteus po 147: I don't really follow baseball anymore, but I happened to notice on my news sites today that the Dodgers are 2-0 with the Cardinals and are primed to go to the National League Finals. Is there a chance St. Louis will come back and win in three? If the Dodgers do win, who will they most likely face in the division finals? What are there chances? |
| Oct-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: Sure, there's a chance the Cards will come back. The fluky game 2 win was a real blow, though. The winner will face the winner of the Philadelphia-Colorado series, now tied at 1-1. |
| Oct-10-09 | | suenteus po 147: <Jim Bartle> Didn't the Phillies knock out the Dodgers to go to the World Series a year or two back? |
Oct-10-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <suenteus po 147> The Dodgers certainly have to be heavily favored to advance, but they go to St. Louis for the next two games. If they lose those the deciding game will be in LA, but anything can happen in a single game. The other series is Philadelphia and the Colorado Rockies, and is tied 1-1 with two games coming up in Colorado. I think the Rockies have the advantage--but the fact is that all these teams are so close (they finished the regular season within four games of each other) that no result would be an upset. |
| Oct-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: suenteus: Yes, last year. |
| Oct-10-09 | | suenteus po 147: <Phony Benoni> & <Jim Bartle> Thanks, guys. I talk to my mother every weekend and when baseball gets to division series playoffs, finals, etc. she loves to talk about it. Always helps me to know what's going on :) |

 | | Phony Benoni: The best hitting team of all time? Right here:
http://retrosheet.org/Research/Ruan... The numbers are mind-boggling. |
| Oct-10-09 | | Jim Bartle: And I thought the Indians' 1987 pitching staff was bad. |
Oct-10-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <suenteus po 147>: If your mother's a Dodgers fan, it will be a happy phone call. They just beat the Cardinals 5-1 and swept the series. Their next opponent will be the Phillies or the Rockies, but that won't be decided for several days. The Dodgers should be favored against either one, and have the advantage of getting an extra game at home. But there will be many fingernails to gnaw yet! |
| Oct-10-09 | | dzechiel: <A.G. Argent: Yes, Dave Z, Dodgers in three.> You should be a bookie. Even I didn't expect it to be three games. |
