Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Nov-21-09  Jim Bartle: I really despised those old tyrannical college coaches like Hayes and Schembechler, with the three-yards-and-a-cloud-of-dust offenses.

Phony Benoni: Hey! Watch what you say about the revered Bo in these parts!

That being said, it was true that the Big Ten style didn't often work out in bowl games against more balanced teams. Michigan rarely got blown out, but usually couldn't quite get over the hump.

And I did get tired of the act about the goal every year being "Win the Big 10 and go to the Rose Bowl". Nothing else was important. Not winning the Rose Bowl. Not contending on a national basis. No, just winning the Big 10 was all that mattered.

Nov-22-09  Jim Bartle: I hear he did a great job with the Tigers as well.

Phony Benoni: <JB> I had to refresh my memory on Bo as GM of the Tigers. Unfortunately, his time with the team (1990-1992) will always be remembered for the firing of Ernie Harwell. It turns out that this was a radio station decision rather than one by the team, but Bo took the heat.

In 1989, the Tigers went 59-103. In 1990, they were 79-83 with a huge turnover on the roster, and stayed at that level until Schembechler retired following the sale of the team in 1992.

Allen Trammell spoke highly of Bo, crediting him with bringing in a modern-day strength and conditioning program. Ultimately, though, the Tigers proved to be in a transitional phase and collapsed for years after Schembechler left.

Nov-22-09  Jim Bartle: I always thought it was Schembechler who fired Harwell. Live and learn.
Nov-22-09  Jim Bartle: Brett Hull is no Michael Jordan:

"I accept this honor for all those playing pickup, beer league and senior hockey, who never got the opportunity that I did. For every mom up at 5 (a.m.), who drives to practice . . . every dad working overtime to buy equipment and a pair of tickets to take his kids to an NHL game.

"Every teammate that sacrificed, every trainer that patched me up and every stick boy that brought me a cold one after the game. Nothing in life is worth a damn without friends."

Nov-22-09  technical draw: Since I have you all convinced to be Yankees fans I will now make you OSU fans. First Woody Hayes IS Ohio State. Second become a real fan by bookmaking this page:

http://www.buckeyefansonly.com/woody/

And I'll see you in the Rose Bowl.

Nov-22-09  Jim Bartle: I already saw OSU in the Rose Bowl once, in 1971. Couldn't figure out what to do when Jim Plunkett threw the ball in the air. So long, perfect season.

And for Stanford, goodbye Rose Bowl: Cal 34 Stanford 28.

Phony Benoni: The public around here is celebrating today's game between the Browns and the Lions, a.k.a. the Resistable Force vs. the Movable Object. The celebration is due to the fact that the game is blacked out locally, as many people didn't buy tickets fearing their hearts might not survive the excitement.
Nov-22-09  A.G. Argent: Uh-oh. To quote that great prognosticator Gandalf The Grey; "It begins." <TD> I don't know if you are aware or not but I live here in Oregon. And it is, as you know, going to be Oregon State v Oregon to see who goes to the Rose Bowl to meet The Ohio State. Hopefully Oregon. Would love to see Masoli on that stage. He was incredible last night as the Ducks took Arizona in double OT. But speaking of hype, the local press here is going to be unbearable for the next week and a half in building up for what they're already calling the greatest Civil War game ever. But congrats for disposing of your #1 rival. This is all gonna be a gas.
Nov-22-09  Jim Bartle: Hey, if Oregon State beats Oregon, I'm pretty sure OSU is going to win the Rose Bowl.

Excellent game last night. I'm glad Oregon didn't lose to a team wearing all red (jerseys AND pants).

Masoli is very exciting. Stanford managed to beat Oregon, but they were just holding on, trying to last to the end, as it was clear that overall Oregon was much better.

Nov-22-09  technical draw: Here's an OSU celebration video. Um, there's something to the right about a nude calendar, just ignore it.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/...

Nov-22-09  Jim Bartle: PB: Losing to Cal is bad just for its own sake, since leaving the stadium you have to walk side by side with screaming Cal fans. But the rivalry with Cal is not really a hate-filled one. Stanford's most hated rival by far is USC.

And "The celebration is due to the fact that the game is blacked out locally"? Great line.

I bet the broadcasters assigned to call that game on TV has to realize he is on their lowest-rated team.

Phony Benoni: Now hold on there. Are you saying the winner of Oregon vs. Oregon State goes to the Rose Bowl? Truly, the Apocalypse is upon us.
Nov-22-09  playground player: When I was at Rutgers our football team was so bad, I got on the team bus by mistake one time and nobody said anything. Maybe they figured I could help them.

I did play on the judo team, though, and ours was the only team that had a winning record. But our coach refused to accompany us on the road. Maybe he was afraid he'd be bad luck.

I dunno why, but college football always struck me as silly, and college football coaches as sillier.

Phony Benoni: Great. Cleveland hasn't scored more than 20 points in a game all year.

They just got 24 against the Lions. <In the first quarter>.

Thankfully, the Browns defense is also co-operating, and the Lions are only trailing by 7.

Nov-22-09  Jim Bartle: Maybe they should have blacked it out and radio as well.
Nov-22-09  Travis Bickle: <Technical Draw> I'm confused by these words of wisdom by Coach Hayes? [Once you learn to quit, it becomes a habit. - Woody Hayes] I always thought once you quit smoking you break the habit? ; P
Nov-22-09  Deus Ex Alekhina: Didn't Woody Hayes take his players to go see the movie "Patton" before every OSU-UofM game?
Nov-22-09  A.G. Argent: L-I-O-N-S!!! Lions, Lions, Lions. Stafford=Tarkenton. Incredible finish. Congrats, Czar.

Phony Benoni: Lions down 37-31 with 8 seconds left at the Cleveland 32, with no time outs. Stafford throws one up for Calvin Johnson in the end zone--and it's intercepted.

Wait--pass interference on Cleveland! Lions get one more play at the one yard line with no time left.

Stafford throws his fifth touchdown pass of the day. Lions win 38-37. Final drive: 88 yards in 1:46 with no time outs.

I told you the fans feared their hearts wouldn't stand the excitement.

Nov-22-09  hangingenprise: there is the second win. one more to go on my prediction of 3 wins or 4 for the lions. isn't it time to trade stafford and johnson?
o wait, the season has not ended yet!
