Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

   Jun-06-22 W Ritson-Morry vs G T Crown, 1947

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Nov-23-09  playground player: <Phony Benoni> Another Sam Jones, "Toothpick Sam Jones" (Jim Bartle knows who I mean), pitched a no-hitter in the 50s--whereupon the announcer ran onto the field and asked, breathlessly: "Sam, Sam!... How's the family?" Larry King couldn't have done it better.
Nov-23-09  technical draw: Here's a curious anecdote about Puerto Rican baseball player Vic Power:

During Pellot's first two professional seasons, in the French-Canadian town of Drummondville, Quebec, Pellot went by his birth name, Victor Pellot. However, Pellot noticed that the mostly French-speaking crowd began to laugh whenever his name was announced. Initially, Pellot surmised that the crowd was laughing because he was black. This turned out to be incorrect, and Pellot soon learned that the real source of the laughter was not his race, but his last name: the similar-sounding word plotte is slang for "vagina" in the Quebec French.

Nov-23-09  Jim Bartle: TD, can you explain to me why Vic Power only hit 120 home runs in 12 years, Horace Speed only stole four bases, Reggie Cleveland never played for the Indians, and Daryl Boston was never on the Red Sox?
Nov-23-09  technical draw: Sorry can't help you there <JB>. I'm still trying to figure out why John Money is broke.
Nov-23-09  Jim Bartle: Dave Cash took it all.
Nov-23-09  technical draw: Ernie Banks all his money.
Nov-23-09  Jim Bartle: That's the only way he can afford to play two.
Nov-23-09  Deus Ex Alekhina: Perhaps this story has already come up here, but I have just only recently seen it. On youtube there is an animated piece called "Doc Ellis & the LSD No-No" recalling Ellis' LSD induced no hitter against San Diego.

Phony Benoni: Latest word on Matthew Stafford: mild separation of the left shoulder. The injury is not considered significant, but he probably won't play Thursday.

Detroit is a city of optimists. The game has sold out--though, in all probability, there are going to be a lot of Green Bay fans in the stands.

Nov-23-09  Jim Bartle: Dock Ellis: "I thought I'd scored a touchdown!"

Brilliant.

Nov-23-09  Jim Bartle: From Sports Illustrated's Tom Verducci:

"He has to be on the ballot, but not first, ahead of a Gold-Glove catcher on a first-place team who put up one of the best seasons ever at the position while winning the modern triple crown (batting, on-base and slugging percentages)."

Ugh. Double ugh. I like the newer stats and emphasis on on-base average, but "the modern triple crown"? Who invented that?

Phony Benoni: Hadn't realized this. The three Alou brothers all played for Oakland from 1970-1974--but were never on the team at the same time. Felipe in 1970-71, Matty in 1972, Jesus in 1973-1974.

There was a pitcher named Rob Gardner whom the Yankees traded to Oakland for Felipe in April, 1971. He found his way back to the Yankees, and was traded to Oakland for Matty in November, 1972! However, he was unable to achieve the Triple Crown.

Nov-24-09  Travis Bickle: Hmmm... Just a thought but I'm wondering when the great librarian and wise baseball afficiando himself Mr. Phony Benoni will submit a song on my forum...
Nov-24-09  Travis Bickle: I'm also wondering how could the 1969, 1984 and the 2003 Cubs not make The World Series?? Sigh... Never mind I remember why now.

Phony Benoni: <Travis Bickle> Since when would a librarian recommend anything that makes a sound?

Actually, I'm wouldn't know what to recommend. I'm mostly a classical guy anyway; at the moment, I'm listening to the finale of Beethoven's Piano Sonata No.17.

I could point you to some of the songs I've written, but that would be self-serving.

Nov-24-09  Travis Bickle: Here's a great song about the misery of being a Cubsfan by Steve Goodman.

Phony Benoni: Well, Mr. Bickle, if you really want me to recommend a song ...

As I say in my profile, I'd rather enjoy a chess game than analyze it. The same goes for music. All I know is that this song makes me feel good. And when you get right down to it, what else should we expect from music?

Nov-25-09  Travis Bickle: <Phony Benoni> Outstanding selection!!! Bravo Mr. Benoni!! I really dig the Allman Brothers. I wish you would have put the link on my forum... : ( You would have made history! ; P
Nov-25-09  waustad: <pb>As an original Clevelander I can sympathise. I tried to clue you in to a crossword puzzle that actually used "phonybaloney" but I couldn't remember exactly your handle. I should have. If it makes you feel better, I always include Alan Trammel in my straw ballot for the HOF.
