 | | Phony Benoni: After watching the Lions today, I'm more in the mood for a pick-me-up. Need some hard-core Germanic testosterone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V92O...
Particularly when it's about a group of women.
And the next person who says "Kill the Wabbit" is going to incur my wrath. |
| Nov-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: So is that Barry Sanders, Joe Schmidt, Night Train Lane and Chris Spielman riding to the rescue? |

 | | Phony Benoni: Pride goeth before a fall (see Ron Herbel's performance in the Giants' fifth inning: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... |
| Nov-26-09 | | Jim Bartle: What would you expect? Herbel had probably never been to second base before. But i'm not sure that's a legit box score. I mean, "Henderson cf"? |
| Nov-28-09 | | Travis Bickle: Man I wish The Cubs would sign this girl up and cut loose that butcher in left field by the name of Soriano.

| Nov-28-09 | | Jim Bartle: Newly up for election to the Hall of Fame:
Roberto Alomar, Fred McGriff, Barry Larkin, Edgar Martinez. I'd vote for Alomar and Martinez now, Larkin in a future year, McGriff no. Others first-timers on the ballot, mostly for comic relief: Kevin Appier, Ellis Burks, Andres Galarraga, Pat Hentgen, Mike Jackson, Eric Karros, Ray Lankford, Shane Reynolds, David Segui, Robin Ventura and Todd Zeile. Of the holdovers, I think Tim Raines and Lee Smith should definitely go in. Undecided on Bert Blyleven and Andre Dawson. |
| Nov-28-09 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> Edgar Martinez yes, R. Alomar no. Imagine how famous Edgar would've been if he'd played in New York--but it might hurt his chances, playing in so many games as the DH. As we all know, the DH is not quite the same as a real baseball player. For one thing, it's probably harder. I hated DHing in softball--boring, boring, boring! I read somewhere that Mark McGwire is still on the list, eligible to be voted for. They've gotta be kidding. |
Nov-28-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Alomar, yes: best second baseman of his time, and a winner. Edgar Martinez, yes. He's got the numbers, and I don't penalize for being a DH. There are any number of players in the HOF who didn't qualify for their defense. Larkin, I'm not so sure. One of the better shortstops of his time, but I don't se him with Alomar's numbers or dominance. McGriff has a case, but not enough consistency and not enough of a colorful player to balance bouncing around like he did. You always have to question a player who has to agonize over deciding which team's cap to wear. Galarraga and Dawson I see as similar to McGriff, though one shudders to think what André might have done with one good knee, let alone two. Galarraga's numbers will probably be discounted because of his Colorado years. Lee Smith is a definite in my book; Bert Blyleven a not sure. Again, there's the matter of dominance. Lee Smith was the best for some time; Blyleven was always near the top, but never #1. But I think they'll both get in eventually based on numbers. Tim Raines, I don't know. Not that many really dominant seasons. He strung together several in a row early in his career, but didn't rank as high afterwards. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Hey, Travis, that was a great catch! It turned the catcher left-handed! Seriously, I hope it was faked, because I would have fired her if it was real. She had no business going for a ball that close to being fair. So the Cubs will just have to wait. However, maybe the Bears can sign up this kid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhxK... |
Nov-28-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Charlie Weis not going down without a fight! |
| Nov-28-09 | | Jim Bartle: Honestly, though, PB, if a Stanford player breathes on a Notre Dame player, it's a penalty. Incredible discrepancy, as Notre Dame players are taunting and not getting called for anything. |
Nov-28-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Haven't been paying that much attention. I just look at the TV whenever I hear the word "touchdown" and watch the replay. That's been enough of a workout tonight. |
| Nov-28-09 | | Jim Bartle: Notre Dame 2 penalties for 8 yards, Stanford 7 for 90 yards. No taunting called even though the ND receiver pranced into the end zone backwards. |
Nov-28-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Looks like it didn't help. I think I'm rooting for the Lions to take Gerhart in the draft. |
| Nov-28-09 | | Jim Bartle: Really I don't know how good a pro he will be. Good but probably not a star. Or maybe a Mike Alstott type. Interesting choice of ND just to give up the touchdown to get the ball back at the end. Stanford really should have taken a knee and kicked a field goal with just a few seconds left. That punk Golden Tate styled his way in for a touchdown, but at the end didn't bother to hustle back to the line of scrimmage, costing his team one more play. Really weak. |
Nov-29-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, the Lions could use an Alstott type. And about 21 other players. Actually, I think they'll go defensive line this year, especially for a pass rusher. |
| Nov-29-09 | | A.G. Argent: JB, I think he's more of a speedier version of Tom Rathman and you're right, fullbacks never become stars. No glamour. |
| Nov-29-09 | | technical draw: Contrary to what you may read here I had nothing to do with that USC -UCLA game: http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/footba... |
| Nov-30-09 | | waustad: <tb>Yeah, a friend sent me that link from Costa Rica. Now that is a catch! |
| Nov-30-09 | | waustad: Blyleven is an OBVIOUS yes. He's 5th in Ks and threw 60 shutouts. In the live ball era he is behind Spahn with 63 and Ryan and Seaver with 61. Chicken brained clowns like Heyman say he wasn't dominant. What is more dominant than striking people out or throwing a shutout? He threw more shutouts than Glavin threw complete games. He merely committed the sins of playing for Cleveland, Minnesota, Texas, Pittsburgh and the Angels. How many members of BBWAA live within 100 miles of the Metrodome? How many live within 100 miles of Yankee Stadium? A pitcher's job is to prevent the opponent from scoring (he's way up there in terms of runs prevented). If his team scores, that turns into a win. Whitey Ford won a ton of games. I don't deny that he was a great pitcher, but he got 115 support (15% above average for his starts). Blyleven got 97. If I recall correctly, he lost 15 games 1-0. Sorry, but it isn't even close. It is embarrassing that anybody even still questions it. OK, I'll get off my soapbox. |
| Nov-30-09 | | Travis Bickle: Hey Phony Dem Saints are pretty good huh!? |

| Dec-01-09 | | noso: <Phony Benoni> actually doesn't rhyme because "Benoni" should be pronounced "ben-ohn-EE," which is Hebrew for "son of my sorrow" (referring to the backward d6-pawn). |
