Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <noso> It's all right. I always pronounce Phony as "phon-EE".

By the way, I have to wonder about your derivation as well, since the "backward" d6 pawn does not appear in many lines of the Benoni. It's mainly a feature of the Modern Benoni, where Black plays ...e6. And, technically, I don't know if it's backward anyway since it is blocked by a White pawn.

<waustad> No problem. I consider that more of an expostuation than a real rant anyway. There's a difference between a passionate rant and an ill-tempered one, and my problems are with the latter type.

Phony Benoni: And, for once I have to agree with <WannaBe>. Harry Carey comes in first. Everyone else is tied for last.
Dec-01-09  playground player: <waustad> Blyleven had great career stats, to be sure. If I were picking a 1970s team, I would want him on my pitching staff.

But selection for the Hall of Fame ought to be more than just by the numbers, and generally has been. If it were not so, then these guys all ought to be in the HOF--Bobby Bonds, Thurman Munson, Al Oliver, Bill Freehan (ask Mr. Benoni whom he'd rather have catching for his team: Freehan, or somebody like Rick Ferrell or Ray Schalk, two who are actually in the HOF). I'm sure you can think of as many as I can.

I'm not saying Blyleven shouldn't be elected. But sometimes the standards for election simply elude me.

Phony Benoni: It's probably a good thing that numbers aren't the only factor. We've all seen players hang on to get that 300th win or 3000th hit. Imagine how bad that might be if there were a strict numerical qualification.

Sometimes, it's the matter of that One Shining Moment. Brooks Robinson was long recognized as a great fielder, yet his numbers probably wouldn't have gotten him in--had it not been for the 1970 World Series which it seemed he won single-handedly. And would Don Larsen or Roger Maris have gotten a lot support but for their one shining moment (though there is more of a case for Maris overall).

And sometimes personality plays a factor. Ted Williams once lost an MVP because his surly attitude toward reporters led to a couple of them leaving him off the ballot completely.

Or take Kirby Puckett. Good, even great career: 12 years, .318 BA, 19 HRS/99 RBIs per year, top notch centerfielder. But he didn't play long enough to pile up the big numbers, and (Horrors!) played only for Minnesota. Maybe he had enough to get in eventually, but he got in on the first ballot largely on his personality and as an ambassador for the game.

So maybe that's Blyleven's problem. An excellent career, but he never had that one defining moment that sticks a player in the collective consciousness forever. Not his fault, but that's how it seems to work sometimes.

Dec-01-09  noso: Regarding the derivation, I don't know for sure. Maybe wikipedia is mistaken on that one.

Phony Benoni: <noso> I know about the Hebrew word; it dates back to the death in childbirth of Jacob's wife, Rachel. I just didn't think its attachment to the opening was due to the weakness of the d6-pawn.

However, I may have been too hasty in that assumption. Looking at some of the Oldest Benonis, I see that Black often plays ...e5. This means that the d6 pawn assumes the type of suuport role it plays in the Modern Benoni. If it's blown up, Black is usually in deep trouble.

Dec-02-09  Jim Bartle: Kirby Puckett: Didn't he have to retire because of a medical condition in his eyes? So he was given a break concerning his relatively short career.

Whitey Ford: It is true he got great support, pitching for great teams. On the other hand, with Stengel (through 1960) he almost never started against the bottom two or three teams in the league, where good pitchers usually rack up the wins.

With Houk starting in 1961 he finally began to start in a regular rotation, against all the teams, and he had seasons of 25-4 and 24-7.

With Stengel he started maybe 27-30 games a year; with Houk around 37.

Dec-02-09  Travis Bickle: Hey <Jim Bartle> (you really ought to have a forum), ; P did you see my Bob Dylan & The Band playlist?
Dec-02-09  playground player: <Travis Bickle> Why should Mr. Bartle have his own forum, when he's making such good use of this one? I have my own forum, but everyone would rather come here. In fact, I'd rather come here! Thank you again, <Phony Benoni>, for your perpetual house party.
Dec-02-09  A.G. Argent: Ducks favored by 10 over Oregon State tomorrow night?? Oooh, I don't think so. I'd say maybe 3, 3 1/2 or so. Bevos are plenty tough.
Dec-02-09  Travis Bickle: <playground player> Mr Benoni "The Good Librarian" has a great site! I just wanted to give JB a message and felt like I was intruding on Phony's site is all.

Phony Benoni: <A.G. Argent> I thought you were going to say the Beavers have a ... er, darn good team.
Dec-03-09  A.G. Argent: I ain't touching that with a 10 ft........oh, never mind. Well, they are 16th, I think. Remember, winner goes to the Rose Bowl to play.....I forget,....some college team from Iowa, Illinois, Ohio...somewhere in there. The Buck Guys or something like that. Must be a school of economics for men. I bet the tuition is more than $20.00 per term.
Dec-03-09  technical draw: The team going to the Rose bowl are (is) the Ohio State Buckeyes and some other team. I was at OSU in 1971 and I lived on High street. Get it? College, 1971, high? haha, sophomoric humor.
Dec-03-09  zanshin: <Jim Bartle: Kirby Puckett: Didn't he have to retire because of a medical condition in his eyes?>

<JB> His right eye. I didn't even have to Google this because I think of his case as a cautionary one on acute angle glaucoma - rapid pressure increase leading to sudden vision loss.

Dec-03-09  A.G. Argent: T, I thought MY humor was sophomoronic.
Dec-03-09  Jim Bartle: Yes, Ohio State played in the Rose Bowl in 1971, took its 11-0 team there to play Stanford. I was there. Didn't go well for OSU.
Dec-03-09  technical draw: <A.G> Almost missed it <sophomoronic>. How about sophomoronical?

Besides, I have no problem with anyone who went to Oregon State University in 1971. Or any other year, for that matter.

Dec-03-09  A.G. Argent: Quack.
