| Dec-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: Slap? Gnaw? Chew? |
| Dec-03-09 | | A.G. Argent: Now THAT'S funny; <Gnaw?>. In other words, a Beaver sound bite? |
Dec-03-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Don't these teams ever stop scoring? |
| Dec-03-09 | | Jim Bartle: That's the Pac-10 this year. Stanford beat Oregon 51-42 with a couple of clutch 3-pointers and good foul shooting at the end, and OSU beat S by something like 45-10. |
| Dec-04-09 | | A.G. Argent: What'd I say; 3 1/2 at the most? 37 to 33, final. I tell ya people, ol' AG should be a bookie. Quack, bloody quack. Ducks v. Bug Eyes = Grandaddy of 'em all. |
| Dec-04-09 | | Jim Bartle: Darn. If Oregon State had won, I could have written "Timberrrrr! (Crunch, crunch, crunch.)" |
Dec-05-09
 | | Phony Benoni: OK, so it was <Central> Michigan. and they beat Ohio University Without State In The Middle. But they still won the MAC title, and will probably go to the GMAC Bowl. Their senior quarterback, Dan LeFevour, has now accounted for 148 TDs passing, rushing and receiving. Congratulations, Chips! At least one team in this blasted state can play football! |

 | | Phony Benoni: Retrosheet now has the 1871 season up, which means that this beauty if available: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... I think the pitchers must have been exhausted from running the bases. |
| Dec-05-09 | | hangingenprise: since the lions will have a top draft choice again-like the sadiers- are they looking for an alstott type receiver?
look at al cuckoo davis bust: mcfadden, williams, bey, and of course
arrrrgh russel. maybe travis will trade a jay for a chumpmarcus. |
| Dec-05-09 | | Jim Bartle: Not a shutout for even half an inning.
And 82 runs but only three homers.
JaMarcus Russell really is awful, unbelievably so. And worse, he thinks he is doing OK. And he was the #1 overall pick. |
| Dec-05-09 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> 49-23??? In baseball? I read the score sheet, and I still don't believe it. I've been in a lot of really terrible slow-pitch softball games, but never one in which 72 runs were scored. Not even in a beer game. What the heck were they doing in 1871? Where's Old Hoss Radbourne when you need him? |
Dec-05-09
 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> It was even worse; 49-33, for 82 runs. 1871 was the first year of the National Association, the first professional league, and things were not well organized. Only 120 games were played the entire year. That 49-33 was a bit extraordinary, even by NA standards. Still, teams averaged about 11 runs per game--and that's each team. The fielding may have had something to do with it, since the league ERA was only 4.22. Having both teams reach double digits in runs, hits and errors was nothing unusual. There was also the fair-foul rule, meaning that any ball which hit in fair territory was considered fair, even if it bounced into fould territory before passing first/third base. You can imagine how good bunters and slap hitters could exploit this. There was one fellow named Ross Barnes who was a regular .400 hitter with the rule, a .270 hitter without it. If you prefer, here's the only shutout I've been able to find that year: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... |

 | | Phony Benoni: Now that the MetroDome is history (baseball-wise, at least), it's time to remember it may not have been the worst ball park of all time: http://bioproj.sabr.org/bioproj.cfm... |

 | | Phony Benoni: Veterans Committee on Managers and Umpires votes two into the Hall of Fame: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp... Billy Martin not even close. Does he belong? |
| Dec-07-09 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Does Billy Martin belong in the HOF as a manager? The only thing that would keep him out would be his tormented (and tormenting) personality. If there were a chess Hall of Fame, would we bar Bobby Fischer on account of his revolting personality, or include him for his great achievements in chess? But everything you can say about Fischer in chess applies to Martin in baseball. Marcus Cato used to kick Romans out of the Senate on account of their living blameworthy personal lives. Should that standard apply to an institution created to honor a sport? Martin's achievements as a manager were undeniably great. Many, many times I used to watch him routinely outmanage the likes of Gene Mauch and others. I also used to watch him get himself into ridiculous trouble for no good reason at all. I'd love to get Reggie Jackson's take on this. |
| Dec-07-09 | | technical draw: <"...would we bar Bobby Fischer on account of his revolting personality, or include him for his great achievements in chess? But everything you can say about Fischer in chess applies to Martin in baseball."> Martin is not being barred like Pete Rose. He's just not being selected. |
| Dec-07-09 | | Jim Bartle: Of course Martin deserves the HOF. If Durocher is in, then Martin should be as well. Gene Mauch as well. Herzog certainly deserves it as well. |
| Dec-07-09 | | Jim Bartle: And Harvey should be congratulated for becoming one of a select few to be elected to two Halls of Fame. He was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame many years ago. |
| Dec-07-09 | | technical draw: Baseball Managers in the Hall of Fame:
http://www.baseball-almanac.com/hof... |
| Dec-07-09 | | technical draw: Bobby Cox should be in the Hall of Fame, only because he looks like Pope John Paul II...: http://classic17.files.wordpress.co... |
| Dec-08-09 | | playground player: <technical draw> Sorry, I didn't mean "barred" in the same way Pete Rose is officially barred for a stated reason. And "not selected" need not be forever. Come to think of it, I saw Billy Martin manage rings around Whitey Herzog when Whitey managed the KC Royals. But Whitey did manage to go through a whole career without brawling with his players, calling his owner "a congenital liar," and drinking himself into a fatal auto accident. By any standard, Billy was a troubled soul. And his mother was a real piece of work, too. |
| Dec-08-09 | | Jim Bartle: Oh baloney. Martin never outmanaged Herzog. The Royals won the regular season matchups over the Yankees when those two were the managers. Martin won two playoff series by 3-2, basically because he had Sparky Lyle and KC had Mark Littell. Not a case of one out-managing the other. |
Dec-08-09
 | | Phony Benoni: Martin was a quick energy drink. He provided a quick boost, but woe betide when the reaction set in. There's only a certain number of games that can be won by superiior strategy. Perhaps the most effective managers are those who get the most possible from their players without pushing them beyond their limits. |
