 | | WannaBe: <Phony Benoni: One thing I do know is that I won't bet on them. I like to watch games dispassionately and analytically. If I've got money riding on the outcome, that takes all the fun out of watching.> Better words could not have been said/typed... That is why I quit wagering. I no longer cared about the game, or a good play/pass/catch. All I cared about was the (final) numbers. |
| Jan-11-10 | | Jim Bartle: "Does it really matter that Brett Favre is 0-3 against Dallas in the playoffs?" Of course it does. It means he's "due." |
| Jan-12-10 | | Travis Bickle: With all the commercials making an hour game 3 1/2 hours I have to bet a couple G's to give me incentive to watch. |
Jan-12-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <Travis> What you need to do is root for a puntfest. That will give more slots to show commercials, so they won't pile up like they do in games between two effective offenses. |
| Jan-12-10 | | Travis Bickle: The Bears beatup The Vikings recently & The Prima Donna known as Bret Favre has isolated himself from his team by feuding with his headcoach. This all leads to another Favre late season meltdown. Dallas is going to spank his and Minnesota's A$$!! |
| Jan-12-10 | | Travis Bickle: Good thinking Dr. Benoni but they'll figure out ways to bombard my poor subconcious with advertisements! |
| Jan-12-10 | | dakgootje: <so they won't pile up like they do in games between two effective offenses.> Isn't that the best? With only a few commercials you don't have enough time to get a new drink :/ |
| Jan-12-10 | | Jim Bartle: I started to see what everybody means about the commercials during games on Saturday. During the season I had the DirecTV "Red Zone" channel, no commercials and jumping from game to game looking for the key moments. |
| Jan-12-10 | | playground player: Who comes back first, Joe Kapp or King Arthur? |
| Jan-12-10 | | Jim Bartle: I see McGwire is apologizing left and right for the sham of the 1998 home run race. Curious that he hasn't apologized to Sammy Sosa, though. After all, Sosa broke Maris' record as well, and was therefore "cheated" out of the recognition. Wonder what was going through McGwire's mind? |
| Jan-12-10 | | Jim Bartle: Bud Selig: “The use of steroids and amphetamines amongst today’s players has greatly subsided and is <virtually nonexistent>, as our testing results have shown." That's a relief. |
| Jan-12-10 | | NakoSonorense: <Curious that he hasn't apologized to Sammy Sosa> I don't see why he should. Didn't Sosa test positive for steriods in 2003? Chances are that both of them were using drugs during their 1998 homerun spree. |
Jan-12-10
 | | chancho: Yeah, and then there's Barry Bonds who was juicing left and right, and up and down... |
| Jan-12-10 | | Jim Bartle: Bonds is in legal trouble as well as in trouble from baseball. Sosa has now been hung out to dry. There's no question he's as guilty as McGwire (look at his build throughout his career), and he'll just look sillier every day he keeps quiet. |
| Jan-12-10 | | technical draw: The last home run hit by a non-steroid user was by Luis Aparicio of the Chicago White Sox in 1961. He hit 2 home runs that year. |
Jan-12-10
 | | Phony Benoni: <td> You may know humor, but I know where to look up baseball facts. Aparicio hit 6 home runs in 1961, after hitting two the previous year. http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...
Of course, in 1961 everybody was juiced up on expansion pitching. |
| Jan-12-10 | | technical draw: No, the mistake was the year it was supposed to be 1960 cause in '61 Maris broke Ruth's record (without steroids?) |
| Jan-12-10 | | technical draw: BTW did you all know that Roger Maris' record lasted longer than Ruth's and that it still is the AL record? (I saw Maris hit the 61st on TV) |
| Jan-12-10 | | Jim Bartle: I wonder how many of those Aparicio home runs were inside-the-park? |
| Jan-12-10 | | technical draw: Right <JB> Aparicio was a base stealer. Trying to remember some team players from the 1961 White Sox I remember, Aparicio, Nellie Fox, catcher Sherman Lollar and Mr. biceps, Ted Klusewski. And I remember pitcher Juan Pizarro. Thats all. |
| Jan-12-10 | | technical draw: Oh, I forgot Jim Landis. |
| Jan-12-10 | | Jim Bartle: Minnie Minoso wasn't on that team? Early Wynn had to be one of the pitchers, and Billy Pierce, in his last year before going to the Giants. By the way, in his autobiography Joe Morgan just heaped praise on Nellie Fox for helping him in his rookie year with the Astros. |
| Jan-12-10 | | technical draw: I don't remember Miñoso or Wynn. But I do remember Billy Pierce (or at least the name rings a bell). |
| Jan-12-10 | | Jim Bartle: Early Wynn was a 300-game winner and notoriously nasty player, the one who said he'd throw at his mother only if she was digging in. Minnie Minoso was a Cuban outfielder who played through the 50s and early 60s, a really good hitter, and very fast, even though he looked about 40 when he started playing. He came back to play a couple of games in the 70s and I think, 1980, as publicity stunts. |
| Jan-12-10 | | technical draw: Oh, I remember the players, thanks. What I don't remember is them playing for the '61 White Sox. |
