Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jan-09-10  Jim Bartle: My picks: Jets, Dallas, Green Bay, New England. All lose next week except whoever plays against Minnesota. Is Green Bay in line to play Minnesota again?
Jan-09-10  hangingenprise: phony: do the lions need a safety?
that #2 from texas look very impressive against alabama. most likely the lions will take the defensive tackle from ok. ravens defensive, philys offensive,
cincy at home, green bay arizona toss up.

Phony Benoni: <JB> If Dallas and GB wins, I think Dallas gets Minnesota and Green Bay goes to New Orleans. Since Dallas is a division winner and GB a wild card, the Cowboys are a higher seed.

<hangingenprise> All the talk around here is defensive line, particularly a run stopper. I can just about guarantee the pick will not be on the offensive side, though they'll surely get some offensive linemen somewhere.

By the way, you think New Orleans and Arizona will deactivate their punters for next week?

And why don't I hear anybody screaming about the unfair NFL overtime rules?

Jan-11-10  dakgootje: <I do hope everyone bet the "over" in the Green Bay - Arizona game.>

Heh, be sure to bet it next week with the cards vs the saints ;) [and/or saints themselves...]

Jan-11-10  A.G. Argent: <dagootie> Are you really a Nederlander who is an American football fan?
Jan-11-10  dakgootje: Seems a contradictio in terminis eh? ;)

In the past I have done a little sport gambling* (mainly baseball but other sports as well) which got me interested in and curious about baseball, american football (nfl/ncaaf) and basketball (nbb/ncaab). Was especially surprised how much tactics and strategy etc there was in a mindless-looking game as american football.

* The site, centsports.com, gives 10 cents for free which they get from ad-revenue; you can use that to try and win more with normal bookie-odds - when you get up to a certain point ($10 I believe) you can enter brackets to cash-out your winnings. It's nice for your don't have to risk anything yourself and the site itself works because most people can not overcome the juice the bookies take and therefore will not win in the long run.

I was kinda good at it, but it just takes way too much time lol.

Jan-11-10  Jim Bartle: I think you'd be nuts to bet on college football unless you're really plugged in to the teams you're betting on. There's just so much daily information that the best bettors are going to get that everybody else is at a big disadvantage.
Jan-11-10  dakgootje: very true, but I only found that out after losing ;)

Sometimes it really could pay looking at the matches of lesser-known teams, simply because the lines are <much> shakier. And who knows more about those teams than their own communities right? So googling their local newspaper might work and every now and then you might pick up on some tough-match-up according to their reporter since their local semi-star player probably was injured [which the line-makers hadn't adjusted for].

All in all, it's a heap of extra work and thus quite unnecessary for there was enough action generally with other games.

Phony Benoni: Oh, barf! Never bet on me! I was the horse once, and it was one of the worst experiences of my life.

A co-worker mentioned he had a friend visiting from Poland who was looking for a good chess game, and wondered if I was interested. When we got together, my co-worker casually mentioned, "Oh, by the way, I bet $50 on you to win."

That was not conducive to good concentration. Let's just say that, if I were a race horse, my name would be Glue Factory.

Jan-11-10  Jim Bartle: Deux ex Alekhina: Down here we get all big games which are on ABC or ESPN, and every so often on Fox, but usually with a delay. No games broadcast here which are on NBC or CBS.

Of course we do get every single major European football match live, and repeated in the evenings.

WannaBe: Okay, this is no joke, not 'really' a funny post, (since I haven't won the funniest kibitzer award for as long as I've been a member here...)

Here is how I bet/wager on sports, especially American Football, College, or Pro.

1) You have to be a sports fan, you have to visit espn.com, nfl.com, nba.com, nhl.com, si.com, or sports.yahoo.com site, at least 3 times a day; to keep up with the injuries, changes, in-fightings, and the weird numbers

Example: I saw this on espn (TV) today, Brett Favre, is 0-3 against Dallas in playoffs.

2) You have to lose, like chess, you don't learn by winning. Then, you get an idea of your limit(ation)

3) In college, focus on one conference, Pac-10, Big 10, SEC, Mountain West, Mid-American, I don't care, focus on one conference. Because College have way too many teams.

4a) Predict the line/odds. Let's say, after the weekends games, you know that Dallas Cowboys is going to Minnesota, and you know Arizona is going to New Orleans. In your head, come up with a number (This will tell you how well you know the team, and the game)

4b) How close is your numbers? Did you have Minnesota -10? San Diego -7.5? Indianapolis -14.5?

4c) How far off were your numbers? And if you go back to '4a', and if you recorded your win/loss, it will give you a better idea.

5) Never, ever, ever, bet on your favourite team/person, I don't care if it's Manchester U, Real Madrid, USC, Ohio State, Lakers, Yankees, Ali, Tyson, even your own grandmother.

With that said, I'll take Dallas this weekend, I think they will do what the NY Giants did 2 years ago and make a good run in the playoffs, they may lose, but will cover.

Hope this helps.

Phony Benoni: Does it really matter that Brett Favre is 0-3 against Dallas in the playoffs? Those were different teams, different players and coaches, different conditions. There are too many variables to say whether that particular bit of history will be a good predictor of the future.

But I like Dallas anyway for a couple of reasons I think more relevant: momentum and mission. They're playing better at this time of the season, and they have a bad playoff history they seem determined to throw off. The Brett Favre of old might have been able to counteract this with one of his superhuman performances, but I don't see this version pulling it off.

Still thinking about the other games. One thing I do know is that I won't bet on them. I like to watch games dispassionately and analytically. If I've got money riding on the outcome, that takes all the fun out of watching.
