Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jan-06-10  Jim Bartle: Andre Dawson IN!! Roberto Alomar (somehow) still out.

Phony Benoni: Blyleven and Alomar were both within 10 votes of making it. They might have a good chance next time, since the upcoming crop is not impressive. Here is a list of players whose last game was in 2005:

http://retrosheet.org/boxesetc/2005...

Rafael Palmeiro is the big question mark. Outside of him, Jeff Bagwell and Marquis Grisson look like the cream to me, unless I'm missing somebody.

Jan-06-10  Jim Bartle: Palmeiro doesn't have a prayer. Bagwell should make it, but maybe not next year, and Biggio will join him in a couple of years.

Phony Benoni: Re: Bagwell and Biggio: are there any long-time Astros in the Hall? (Excluding guys like Joe Morgan and Nolan Ryan). I suppose I could look this up myself, but I've got some stuff to do.
Jan-06-10  Jim Bartle: I don't think so. Jose Cruz was an outstanding player for many years, but his production was held down by the Astrodome.
Jan-07-10  technical draw: Andre Dawson IN (he has the numbers)

Roberto Alomar OUT (I don't think he has the numbers).

WannaBe: Robin Ventura, OUT, the only way he'll get in, is to have his video fighting Nolan Ryan being shown in the Hall as highlight! Or buy a ticket to get in...
Jan-07-10  A.G. Argent: Sorry, don't quite understand why Ventura would've even been on the ballot.
Jan-07-10  Travis Bickle: Ron Santo FOR HALL OF FAME!!!
Jan-07-10  Travis Bickle: <WannaBe: Robin Ventura, OUT, the only way he'll get in, is to have his video fighting Nolan Ryan being shown in the Hall as highlight! Thats when Ventura hit the breaks. BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Jan-07-10  Jim Bartle: OK, Travis: Andre Dawson's bust in the HOF--Expos cap or Cubs cap?

Phony Benoni: <A.G. Argent> There is a vetting process that looks at all ten-year veterans who have been retired for five years and chucks out the truly unworthy. Baseball-Reference.com has the complete ballot:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/

If you compare this with the list of players who played their last game in 2004:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

You'll see quite a few of the ten-year veterans didn't even make the ballot, like Andy Ashby, Danny Bautista, or Rod Beck.

Ventura was a 16-year veteran with nearly 300 home runs, so there was some excuse for including him. He won't be back, though.

And it was ridiculous not to give Todd Van Poppel a chance.

Jan-07-10  Jim Bartle: I heard van Poppel said he wouldn't sign with the Braves, who had the first choice, so they had to settle for Chipper Jones.

Phony Benoni: By the way, i would be remiss if I didn't mention Michigan's one decent fooball team, the Chippewas of Central Michigan who defeated the Mighty Troy Whatever Their Nickname Is 44-41 in double overtime at the GMAC Bowl last night!

Truly, this game was the most exciting finish possible for the college football bowl season. Any game they could possibly dream up now would simply be an anti-climax which nobody would bother about.

Jan-07-10  Travis Bickle: JB Cubs cap!!
Jan-07-10  Travis Bickle: Ahh!... The sights & sounds, (and celebrities), at beautiful Wrigley Field! A few months Phony & The Cubs will be tied for 1st place!! ; P

WannaBe: Congratulations, you have been awarded the Caissar Award, for Best Game Collection Category!
Jan-08-10  A.G. Argent: Yeah but, <TB>, 11 years with the Expos, only 6 at Wrigley. The Hawk, that is. Instead of it sometimes being an issue with guys, maybe just make it a rule to always have it be the club longest tenured? ( Is that the right word?)

Phony Benoni: But then what happens when Bobo Newsom gets elected by the Veterans Committee?

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

Jan-08-10  Travis Bickle: <A.G. Argent> Nah A.G. Montreal doesnt even exist anymore & besides it was an ugly ballpark Andre had to labor in! The Commisioner will rule in favor of Dawson getting his Cooperstown Day with a Blue Cub hat because he played in the most beautiful park in baseball! Even The Babe was reported to be moved to tears when he hit his 1st homer in 'The Friendly Confines'!
Jan-08-10  A.G. Argent: Should be a best <Czar> award, somewhere, somehow, you ask me. Comin' up with a Bobo Newsome stat sheet. How does he do it? With such aplomb? And timing? None better.

Phony Benoni: <A.G. Argent> Thanks for the tribute. According to this article:

http://espn.go.com/chicago/columns/...

the decision used to always be left up to the player until Wade Boggs tried to make some money off his pick in 2001. Dawson reportedly favors the Cubs, but there are good arguments both ways and a committee will have the final say. At least, with George Steinbrenner on the committee, he probably won't be inducted as a member of the Red Sox.

Jan-08-10  Jim Bartle: Wade Boggs wasn't going to go with the Red Sox?

The odd thing with Dawson is that Expo Andre is a completely differently player than Cub Andre. Expo A was a great all-around player, high average, medium power (more doubles than homers), lots of speed. Cubs A was a pure power hitter and great at it. They even looked really different.

Phony Benoni: Story is that Boggs was making inquiries about compensation from his former teams for the selection.

As for the two Andre Dawsons, I've heard that Montreal's stadium and conditions were not made for power hitting. Also, age and injuries may have sapped his some of his speed by the time he got to the Cubs.

I think he should get his choice, but I have a sentimental leaning toward the Expos. There's not going to be any of them in the future, unless Tim Raines gets lucky.

Phony Benoni: Any thought on the NFL playoffs?

Interesting thing about this weekend's games is that three of the four are remataches from the last week of the season.

The Jets, playing at home, destroyed Cincinati last week to get into the playoffs. This game is at Cincy, and week 17 meant nothing to them. But I don't trust the Bengals to be the sort of team that can flip the switch when needed. I don't trust the Jets either, but I think they can do it again. Next week will be a different story.

Philadelphia got blanked by Dallas last week, and has to play there again. I really like Dallas right now; they finally seem to be clearing out some of that "can't win in December/January" garbage, and Philly may have peaked too soon.

Baltimore at New England is the one non-rematch, and I'm going with the Ravens. Losing Wes Welker is almost as bad a blow as losing Tom Brady, and they haven't been convincing this year at any rate.

Green Bay at Arizona, well, who knows? The Packers won last week, but which Cardinals team will show up? I think it won't be the Super Bowl version, but even so I think Green Bay goes out next week.

Yes, I just love the NFL playoffs. They mean that spring training is only a month away!
