Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jan-02-10  Jim Bartle: Sometimes you get a team which simply isn't capable of playing against an opponent, as I guess Cincinnati wasn't against Florida. Doesn't happen often in big bowl games, though.

I do remember Florida being on the negative side of a complete and total mismatch back in 1996. Nebraska just rolled over them, as they couldn't tackle Tommy Frasier, and their O-line couldn't stop the Nebraska rush even for a second. A complete blowout and an embarrassment for Steve Spurrier.

Jan-03-10  technical draw: <Phony> I thought you were just kidding about those bowl game names until I saw the results of the "Papajohns.com bowl", Connecticut 20, South Carolina 7.

Next year: technicaldraw bowl: Anchorage U vs. Wheeling Tech.

Jan-03-10  Jim Bartle: The technicaldraw bowl will have an interesting rule: it must end in a tie.

The big thing about so many bowl games, even though they don't bring much cash to the universities playing, is they get another month of legal practice time, which coaches use to get ready for the next season. Non-bowl teams aren't allowed to practice.

The technicaldraw bowl will have an interesting rule: it must end in a tie.

Jan-03-10  playground player: Don't forget the Tidy Bowl. I think my alma mater, Rutgers, was in that last year. Guess there's a bowl for everybody.
Jan-03-10  notyetagm: <<notyetagm>: M Turner vs Sasikiran, 2002, after Black's 29th move:>

Phony Benoni: One of the pleasures of watching meaningless games in the last week is hearing the Z-class announcers set themselves up for reprimands, apologies, and firings. This week's nominee:

<"He ran through the defense like it was airport security in Amsterdam!">

Jan-03-10  Jim Bartle: Looks like I forgot to delete a line up there. Oh well.

Gotta love it. I am with Howard Cosell and his disgust with the Jockocracy. A good 75% of the "analysis" of a football game is pointless. "Turnovers kill you." "If you give that quarterback time, he'll pick the defense apart." "They want to make a statement with the first possession of the second half." (Really, I thought they might kneel down 3 times and wait until the second possession to try to score) "He has to make that catch." "They don't want to go down 3 scores" ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Phony Benoni: One reason I prefer watching baseball or football is that the action comes in discrete packets rather than being continuous like basketball, hockeyor soccer. This means you don't have to stay focused on the game, but can just tune back in for real action and avoid much of the blather.
Jan-04-10  Jim Bartle: I understand tape delay, but this is ridiculous!

My cable system couldn't show the Detroit-Minnesota playoff game in October, but they showed it last night. Unfortunately I fell asleep in the 11th inning, so I don't know who won.

Phony Benoni: <JB> You should have taped it and watched it sometime this summer when the Tigers are buried in the cellar.

I am not optimistic about 2010. All I can say is they'll probably win more games than the Lions, Pistons, or Red Wings.

Jan-04-10  Travis Bickle: With all these ridiculous bowl games sooner or later they will get sponsors for The Preparatin H Bowl and The Viagra Bowl. ; P
Jan-04-10  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony how bout them Blackhawks!?
Jan-04-10  Jim Bartle: That last post got me to look at the NHL standings. After I got over my surprise that there are now 30 teams in the league, I was confused as to why only 7 teams have losing records, meaning 80% of the league is "above average." Doesn't seem possible.

Then I realized there are two types of losses, regular and overtime, and that really sends some teams way below .500. One team has lost 11 overtime games!

Phony Benoni: Gosh, <Travis> I'm totally bummed right now. The Lions couldn't beat out the Rams for the first pick or the Raiders for worst record of the decade. The Pistons are crashing, and the Red Wings are crippled by injuries. The Tigers look to be awful, the Shock moved to Tulsa. MSU lost their bowl game, UM sucks, and about the only hope left is Central Michigan, upon whom all our chips have to go.

And it's cold. Oh, well, Another two months and the worst will be over.

Jan-04-10  Travis Bickle: Well Phony you did have great success with The Pistons wining an NBA Title in 2004 & The Red Wings wining two Stanley Cups in recent years & The Tigers making an appearance in the 2006 World Series. Thats a hell of alot better than Chicago has done besides The Bulls of the 90's. P.S. I don't count The White Sox WS. ; P
Jan-04-10  Travis Bickle: ...And yes it's as cold as the arctic circle here in the windy city also!
Jan-04-10  A.G. Argent: 44 days until pitchers and catchers report. (It's the little things in life that sustain.)
Jan-04-10  A.G. Argent: <When I was a lad, I got my kicks...> By the by, Czar, that was a great chart you composed, in case nobody noticed.

Phony Benoni: <A.G. Argent> Thanks. Several others got the joke as well. It's good to know we have a few Gilbert & Sullivan fans around here.
Jan-04-10  Jim Bartle: Yes, great lyrics!! I hadn't seen it until it was pointed out just now. It's easy to say I would have noticed the "queen's navy" similarity, but that's sort of like saying I would have seen a Fischer mate if it hadn't been shown to me first.

Speaking of G & S, has anyone else seen the movie "Topsy Turvy," about their writing of the Mikado? A really excellent movie in every sense.

Jan-04-10  A.G. Argent: Oh Jim, absolutely! My very favorite Mike Leigh movie and one of my favorite pictures in general of the last 10-15 years. Very intelligent picture and surprisingly moving. Love Jim Broadbent, who played Gilbert.
Jan-06-10  hangingenprise: phony there is a nice d.t. at neb. named suh that sure would make a nice fit for the lions or that d.t. from
ok.
the raiders did there best by playing dohmarcus. it was funny because i was listening to the raven broadcast and one guy goes dohmarcus is playing like a all pro meaning he was getting worried that the ravens would loose, than the announcer goes it is not over yet and the next play dohmarcus throws is customary interception......
