Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Dec-31-09  Travis Bickle: Here's a little champagne music for you Phony and all your sports fans!! Happy New Year Mr. Benoni, JB, A.G. Argent and gang!!!

Jan-01-10  playground player: A little Hot Stove League talk: Giants trying to trade Bill White to Cardinals for Toothpick Sam Jones. With Orlando Cepeda around, they won't need the future NL president... Yeah, I know the news is stale by a few decades. It's just nice to reflect back on one of the rare good trades the Giants made.
Jan-01-10  Jim Bartle: Around that time they traded Johnny Antonelli for Harvey Kuenn, and Ruben Gomez for Jack Sanford. The cascade of disasters started later, beginning with the gift of Felipe Alou and Ed Bailey to the Braves.

Jan-01-10  Travis Bickle: The Cubs sign another Texas outfielder, after the Milton Bradley debacle? Cubs agree with Marlon Byrd on $15M, 3-year deal.
Jan-01-10  Travis Bickle: Now here's a real sport!!

Jan-01-10  A.G. Argent: Speaking of the Cards and the Giants, I am SOOO unhappy that the Cardinals didn't go to great lengths to keep DeRosa. What with Glaus going away, it would have been a perfect fit for him to be their 3rd bagger and have him relax into a starting role which is what he's been wanting and needing and to go ahead and have a break out year. Damn. Well, Jim, he's gonna do that with the Giants. I just see some good years in front of him. Big get for them. Congrats.
Jan-01-10  Red October: Happy New Year <Phony Benoni>!!!
Jan-01-10  technical draw: Buckeyes win the Rose Bowl 26-17!! I'm going to Columbus!!
Jan-01-10  Jim Bartle: Aaaargh! Pac-10 loses 4 of 6 bowl games, and the only wins were against Temple and Boston College.
Jan-01-10  A.G. Argent: Bad Day at Duck Rock.
Jan-01-10  Jim Bartle: Actually I think Pac-10 lost 5 of 7.

Oregon had two big mistakes, the interception at the end of the first half, leading to an OSU field goal. And the fumble into the end zone when it was looking like a TD was coming. Otherwise they could have won.

Phony Benoni: Yep, the Pac-10 is 2-5 this year. The Big Ten is doing well for a change at 3-2 and both losses squeakers, though they have two more chances to lose yet to come.

Here's the scoreboard so far:

<Big Ten>
OutHouse Bowl: Northwestern 35-38 Auburn
Upper Case One Bowl: Penn State 19-17 LSU
Granddaddy Bowl: Ohio State 26-17 Oregon
Chumps Sports Bowl: Wisconsin 20-14 Miami (Fla)
OuttaSight Bowl: Minnesota 13-14 Iowa State

Still to come:
Suspension Bowl: Michigan State vs. Texas Tech
Syringe Bowl: Iowa vs. Georgia Tech

<Pac 10>
GrandDaddy Bowl: Oregon 17-26 Ohio State
Uh-Oh Bowl: Oregon State 20-44 BYU
Poindexter Bowl: California 27-31 Utah
Cubic Zirconium Bowl: USC 24-13 Boston College
Bank Like an Eagle Bowl: UCLA 30-21 Temple
Wholly Dazed Bowl: Arizona 0-33 Nebraska
Stunned Bowl: Stanford 27-31 Oklahoma

Yes, there are entirely too many bowls, and having a 6-6 team celebrate their season with a bowl trip seems a bit ridiculous.

By the way, if you haven't been following the saga of Michigan State and Texas Tech: MSU has suspended 10 players for the game, including several starters, while Texas Tech has merely fired their coach. That should work to their advantage.

Jan-02-10  Jim Bartle: Interesting names there.

The firing of the Texas Tech coach is going to be a real soap opera. Not knowing the facts, I can see it from both sides. Is it an abusive coach who finally met a player with the power to fight back? Or is it an influential parent meddling in the team, trying to help his son at the expense of the rest of the team?

Jan-02-10  Jim Bartle: "What is it about the year 2010 that hasn't occurred since 1809?"

The first two numbers are double the last two?

Reminds me of the time Mad Magazine celebrated 1961 as an upside down year. "First since 1881, last until 6009."

Phony Benoni: Yep. Only happens every 201 years, so we're not likely to see it again unless we develop Daylight Saving Time for calendars as well.

Phony Benoni: As for Texas Tech, I think it's a bit of both. Wouldn't sending a player with a concussion to a darkened area be a good thing?

Whatever the case, you can be sure that Leach will have a new job in no time. If Bobby Knight can latch on at Texas Tech after documented abuse at Indiana, anything is possible.

Jan-02-10  Jim Bartle: What we definitely are going to see is another revelation of the nearly absolute power a head football coach has at a university with a big-time team. Though TT is a little different because the administration clearly didn't like Leach.

Phony Benoni: <Travis Bickle> Congratulations on the Bears getting another home game tomorrow! The Lions sold out, and it certainly wasn't their fans that did it.

OhioChessFan: I think Leach is done. Per the Big 10, I think they should have a bye week in their conference schedule. Without a conference championship, they are sitting 2 more weeks than their bowl opponents. I see NFL teams worry about sitting starters one week, so 7-8 weeks has got to make an impact. I think the whole SEC dominance thing is wayyy overrated, but what do I know?

Phony Benoni: <OhioChessFan> Good point about the Big Ten's long break, but there is talk of fixing that by adding a twelfth team and going to two six-team divisions with a play-off. No mention of who might be joining the Even Bigger Ten, but I doubt it would be Notre Dame.
Jan-02-10  Jim Bartle: Notre Dame will never join a conference.

OhioChessFan: Several Big 10 teams have made crystal clear they don't want Notre Dame. There's a lot of maybes around. Pittsburgh, Marshall, Miami, Bowling Green off the top of my head.

Phony Benoni: I don't see a MAC team like Ohio University or Bowling Green coming in. Cincinnati might be a possibility, since being humiliated by Florida in a bowl game is a pre-requisite to Big Ten membership.
