Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Jan-23-10  dakgootje: As probably mentioned, I didn't follow this years NFL closely (read: Didn't think about it for a moment until a few weeks ago) so I have got a question for those who did (or like to pretend they did):

Why is the o/u for the Colts/Jets so extremely high?!

Relatively speaking of course, as it is around 40 [compared to ~52.5 for the saints/vikings].

I mean, the colts seem to depend almost solely on their passing game and guess who are top-notch at passing defense?! The Jets on the other hand have got a great rushing game, but a horrible passing, so even with mediocre colts-defense, they will put up some numbers on the board... but not 20.

I just do not seem to understand.

Phony Benoni: My gut feeling would be that 40 points in Colts/Jets is more likely to be low than high. Personally, I wouldn't be shocked if they outscore Saints/Vikings. But that's just a gut feeling; I have nothing to back it up. And as I mentioned before, I like to root for irony.
Jan-24-10  Travis Bickle: Ah baseball fights you just gotta love em. I especially like the shot of then Cubs catcher Michael Barrett punching out sox catcher Aj Pierzynski during a Cubs sox game! ; P

Jan-24-10  Jim Bartle: The ones with the guy wielding the bat look really dangerous. I've <never> seen anything like that before.
Jan-24-10  Travis Bickle: JB ya know who was a complete psycho when he got mad was pitcher Joaquin Andujar.
Jan-24-10

Phony Benoni: They didn't have Marichal conking Roseboro? Or Campaneris throwing his bat at Lerrin LaGrow?

By the way, did you notice that the third slide--the one with Nolan Ryan headlocking Robin Venture--was autographed by Ryan?

Jan-24-10  Jim Bartle: Oh yeah, Marichal...

Yes, Andujar could really get upset. But according to Herzog, he cooled down fast as well. So he always tried to put off arguments, and Andujar wouldn't be upset later.

Jan-24-10  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Maybe you remember this one. Giants vs. Mets, 1962: Roger Craig brushes back Orlando Cepeda, and Orlando slowly walks out to the mound and knocks him out cold. Wow! What a punch! (Now Roger knows how the baseball feels.)
Jan-24-10  Jim Bartle: No, didn't remember that on. Will have to check. Craig became more popular with Giants fans a few years later.

Phony Benoni: Here's another version. Scan down to the paragraph beginning <5/27>.

http://armchairgm.wikia.com/1962_Sa...

Another account I found said that Stengel had ordered Craig to "loosen up" the Giants hitters. What's amazing by today's standards is that only one player was ejected.

Retrosheet is not too illuminating on this one.

Jan-24-10  technical draw: Here's a good question: The finals of the world cup soccer championship, the 7th game of the world series and the superbowl all fall on the same day. You can only watch one. Which one would you watch?

TD picks the world cup final.

Jan-24-10  Jim Bartle: From the retrosheet of that game: "Umpires: HP - Al Barlick, 1B - Shag Crawford, 2B - Ed Vargo, 3B - Doug Harvey"

I know impressions can change over time, but that is one legendary umpiring crew.

The mention of "Stevens" in the dispute is undoubtedly longtime San Francisco baseball writer Bob Stevens, who would have been the official scorer. I believe he is in the Hall of Fame.

Jan-24-10  technical draw: Ok, <Phony> Chessgames is livecasting the final game of the world chess championship. Now you've made it harder. Um, let me think.

Phony Benoni: OK, make it the World Series, because I wouldn't feel obligated to watch the commercials.
Jan-24-10  dakgootje: I'd go watch the World Cup hands down. [yeah... 'soccer' ;)]

Maybe with a laptop nearby by the chess game; but by the time the world cup is ended, they shouldn't be further than the 30th move so time enough to see the ending of that as well ;)

I just hate how often they cram in commercials with nfl and baseball isn't the greatest spectator-game.

Jan-24-10  technical draw: Ok. I pick the World Cup final too. It only comes once every 4 years.
Jan-24-10  technical draw: No posts on the Colts 10 point lead with 8 minutes left? (actually in football 8 minutes is an eternity).

Phony Benoni: Oh, c'mon. If the World Cup were that important they'd hold it every year. :)

I recognize the importance and popularity of the World Cup. It's just not a sport I enjoy watching. That's partially comparative ignorance, of course; I didn't grow up with the game and have it imprinted on my consciousness. Also, I just prefer sports where the action is episodic rather than continuous.

The Super Bowl has gotten too full of itself. Why, it's become a national holiday. Nobody goes to work, all the municipal offices are closed, and there's no mail delivery. The game is not <that> important!

(Oh, by the way, Colts/Jets are now up to 44 points, with several minutes left. Looks like the Colts will move on.)

chancho: <technical draw> I'm watching it, and it does not look good. I was hoping Manning and the Colts would be sent packing, but it looks like it's not happening.
Jan-24-10  technical draw: It's all but over. Colts in the superbowl.
Jan-24-10  dakgootje: yeps, seen the whole game [that has been a long time]. Glad I didn't take the under!

Actually, with a friend we just did some fun predictions based on around 15 minutes of research for both semi's -- for this game I had the Jets winning (Yes!) with 17-14; which obviously was about the halftime score ;D

I had read about a 65-0-2 trend of teams, favored by 10 or less, either covering or losing - thus meaning one should either take the dogs or the favorites on the runline. Didn't like the colts enough, so took the Jets. I don't normally care about trends, but that somehow seems too odd to be normal, maybe there is a reason for it, maybe freaky coinsedense.

In any case, we get minus points for the amount we are off for each team; so I'm at -16 and he is at -23 :D Got the saints narrowly winning with 27-24 :/

Two totally different halves; just a much better Colts-offense the second half.
